Title: What causes these imperfections on a bat & how does it effect the willow?
Post by: Calzehbhoy on November 14, 2016, 10:14:11 PM
I have seen this a couple of times on bats and always wondered what they were and what causes them, also, what effect do they have on the performance of the bat?

It's called graping and I love it in my bats

As mentioned its graping sometimes referred to as marbel stain and it comes from were a branch was on the trunk of the tree but was cut away, broke away and elements of the sap grew around the cut. From my understanding makes no difference to performance of a bat at all

So, it is a stain but no harm to performance at all. Does it adds extra weight?

Willow trees which have had there branches pruned produce defective wood groups of small knots known as Grape.
They do not have any effect on the weight of the willow.
That's what we have here.

Love a bit of graiping, adds character to a blade
