Found this on youtube, interesting that Moeen likes a round handle - surely that's proof he's a bowler who bats? ;)

The idiots that's spout this nonsense, or the ones who believe it and pass it on......

If you look carefully you'll see the sharpie writing on the toe.

What is the finger flick test and can we do it next CBF nets.
What sound is it supposed to make or do you just 'know' like getting married?
:)

Like getting married you say?
I will therefore avoid the finger flick test at all costs...
-
The finger test I was taught this by a old Pakistan Pro I swear by it....
Flick near the splice then flick near the middle.
Many do not like doing it and I know one brand owner who hates it..
-
Great I'm about to do it now I happen to have a bat near the sofa (!)
What am I listening for, same sound near splice as near the middle? Is that it? :)

For the benefit of those who don't know this test, what are you listening for or expecting to feel when you do this?
-
The change in sound.

You got a lot of bats to flick this afternoon!! If Simon m and Pete h use this method picking a bat both would have arthritis :)

you will know like I said try tapping up the sound some say it nonsenses I was shown by a very good teacher listen to the different sounds as Tai says...
sounds is only a part but I do understand why lots do it..
On the bat lovely looking profile that...
-
Ok pro.... Great......but I'm still not clear. This is a method to choose a good bat....
So if I flick my bat, near the splice and near the middle(God knows where that is) if the sound is about the same it's a good sign, or if it sounds a bit different that's a good sign.
Sorry if I'm being thick I've never heard of this before
:)
-
Ok.
The this the player had 4 bats..
He tapped the middle and the area above and below the said profile.
He went off a sound which was a doull tone.
You get used to it..
No what I meant was tap the splice and tap the toe area holding the bat and you get a different sound frequency.
I'm more of a poker than a flicker..
My test is quick I hold the bat and flick all around I get used to a certain sound and go with that.
I suspect the test is no more than that but it a bit like using a rock hard ball to test a bat when tapping up.
Most UK makers and brand people think it a load of tosh each to there own...
Most Asian professional's I have had the pleasure of meeting /playing with do the flick test...

Our Indian Pro was flicking my bats, I asked him what sound he was listening for and he just shrugged his shoulders

Ok flick test survey is in, not a huge cross section of willow at the moment granted...but here goes
Bat 1 made in uk-used
Flick test under splice, somewhere near the middle and about an inch from the toe-the same sound as far as I could tell
Bat 2 made in uk-used
Under splice slightly hollow sound, middle a dull sound and near the toe neither a dull nor hollow sound but a different sound to the other two sounds.
So there is something in it. The question of course is which bat Is any good and which one given to the charity shop?
:)

you mad man you only test around the splice and toe to get a sense of sound.
It not a finite art either keep your bloody bats !!!
you only flick where you think the coverage is
-
Starting to get the feeling this is an elaborate hoax. Kinda like being sent to the shop for a left handed screwdriver...

Exactly, it's just something people do to show off in my opinion
If you want to identify a bats qualities from sound, hit it with a mallet

maybe I'm no show off though was shown about it and kind of agree with it.
Mallet is a good way but to me using a bat is the only way...
Tartan paint anybody!!!
-
Big fan of the glass hammer and the long wait
-
I always found mallets to be slight deceptive. Best measure for me is getting an old ball and using the bat to hit the ball into the air all over the blade. Obviously doesn't mimic a bowler bowling, but gives a good indication of how the ball will feel off different parts of the bat.
-
I often used to see pros tapping two new bats together (edge to face. Not seen so much in recent times?

Haha was never meant as a personal sleight on you mate, i've just seen it so many times where someone flicks away on a bat with no apparent reason. When I ask them why, and what they are feeling/listening for, they can't give an answer. To me it just seems like they have seen someone else do it and decided its a cool thing to do.
Maybe i'm slightly bitter towards those who get a nice satisfying click when they do it, i'm a serial nail biter and get no such sound lol.
Completely agree using a bat is the best way to make a judgement, of course in a pre-purchase situation this is not an option, i feel bouncing a ball and hitting with a mallet can give you a decent indication though.
-
Pakistani pro at my club does the flick test . I think you need to hit/tap a bit more substantially though - hence the knock test . Just knock on the bat like you'd knock on a door . You get a similar , but much weaker , sound as when tapping up . I think you flick/knock the toe and splice for a reference of no response /low response , then compare the middle to see how much better it is . A crap bat should feel /sound more similar in the various areas than a bat with a pingy middle .
-
thanks Biggie
I got 3 different sounds on one of my bats, the same sound on the other one
as we have said, not scientific....... :) :)
I have a Pakistani mate when I asked him about this he just laughed !!
