Title: An evening's work…
Post by: jamesisapayne on November 24, 2016, 10:09:12 PM
As I'm working different hours for the next few weeks I'm not able to get home till it's too late to get the sander onto my distinction to finish it, so I thought I'd start work on a more contemporary shaped bat. This one is from a cleft that definitely has something about it. Yes it looks good with8-9 lovely straight grains but it's so easy to cut too, the plane and heel shave (What I'm using until I get a travisher up and running) simply melt through the wood. It's almost like cutting butter, and the sound of the middle has my mouth watering for the new season - it's definitely going to be my match bat as long as I don't mess anything up in the finishing stakes!

The bat currently has 35mm edges, a 55mm spine and weighs 2.9.5, so it should end up around this weight when finished, bound and stickered. I've intentionally gone for an offset edge/spine as I wanted to test myself a little.

Thought I'd put a few more photos up for those that are interested in this sort of thing…

Top work, did you insert the handle and press yourself? Or did you get a part made cleft?

Really like the shape!

Looking good mate, Another good effort. Seem to be picking it up pretty quickly too.

Thanks for the kind words guys, much appreciated.

@Churchy1989 got the clefts handled by John from Red Ink. We pressed them together when I paid him a visit a few weeks ago.

@Red Ink Cricket  thanks John. I'm a pretty hands on guy who picks stuff up quickly but great tuition helps massively ;) I can see already there's a lot of small things that make a big difference. Need a travisher I think as the heel shaves, whilst being great fun to use take out a narrower channel from what I can see so far and I end up with a ridged effect that need to be sanded. A wider blade that could cut one side in a pass will help a lot

Lovely work, and a nice looking cleft. Great effort, looking forward to seeing the finished bat - and the other one of course.

Like the profile (sort of offset edge to elongate the middle). Looks a cracker.
