Title: Senior Training - What does your club do?
Post by: wayward_hayward on November 29, 2016, 08:54:55 PM
As coaching co-ordinator, i'm currently looking at my clubs options for senior training next season. Attendance over the previous few years has been poor and I'm looking at alternative methods to increase participation.

I am interested to find out details about how other clubs run their sessions (if any) and what they consist of (old school net, level 2 or 3 coach leading skills based session etc.)

Nothing.

A few off us may have a net Saturday morning. But it's just turn up, bowl and bat.

My biggest gripe with our club!

Winter nets are once a week, no coaching as such.

However when we get outside, we have a semi-pro come down (Used to play for use before going on to better things) I don't think he's qualified, but passes on the training techniques the paid teams use.

Don't think you need a pro to have good sessions though. Just a bit of equipment and organisation.

a few years ago we left it to the club captain who thought it would be a great idea to work it around his schedule, so we did a Sunday, then the following Wednesday then didn't have another one until 11 days later on the Sunday again. Which was quite frankly awful, so i did the normal thing and asked people what suited them and surprise, surprise what we used to have as, Sunday evening 7pm starts.

Last year if i remember we had on average 20 players turning up, unfortunately no structure apart from 1st team in 1 net, 2nd in another.. and so on!

We did find the timing of your sessions encourage alot of people.

We generally do a bit of fielding stuff before nets kinda hard indoors though. We generally just net which is my biggest gripe anyone got ideas on how to make nets more realistic to a game situation?

Give run targets/field placements?

Not ideal we play indoor league cricket from January and that's it.
When the  outdoor league starts in April our players are still trying to hit everything over the pavilion.

I think it was Wednesday nights last season.

It went something like this.

Quote
Turn up for a 6.15 start
Do so all while the colts run over, start at 6.30ish

Attempt fielding drills, do it so badly the coach gives us a rollocking then gives up. Usually lasts about 20 minutes.
Free for all in the nets, 2 lanes, no real order. Continue until everyone present has had a 5 minute hit or it's too dark to carry on.

Leave and hope the coach doesn't get too pissed off nobody helped to put the kit away.

Now I think about it I know why I stopped going after 2 sessions now...

We have an unstructured net once a week which the same 4/5 people turn up to every time and most people just don't bother, it drives me mad. I went along to another local clubs training session (Dumbleton) and it was bloody brilliant. Their 1st team plays a much higher level than I do and it was all first teamers when I went along but I thought sod it I'll just muck in and do my best. They started with 20 mins of footy, then onto fielding drills, then bowling drills with two keepers, one for quicks and one for spin so you could practice line and length. This then moved on to a practice game on an old strip out on the square with two batsmen, two bowlers and a cage blocking the leg side then everyone else fielding on the off. The batsmen ran when it was sensible to do so and the aim was to play elegant, controlled shots. Slogging just made you look like an idiot. Then after the batsmen had finished two more took their place and they went off for 20 mins against the bowling machine which someone was manning in the nets. All this was coordinated by their coach/player Wade Ridsdale. It was fantastic. Made me want to go and join them just for their attitude to practice. I'd only play for their 2nds at best but it was truly admirable the way they went about it. They had a very useful left arm orthodox called dwaine Calder who played South Africa under 19's who made me look a bit silly a few times too!!

We have nets booked once a week indoors preseason, 5/6 people if you're lucky turn up, have a slog and lob some balls down. Midweek nets in the season happen maybe 4/5 times? The one occasion actual training was planned last year we did an hour of unconventional fielding drills one person at a time while two blokes bowled at markers, then rushed to get some batting practice in aflt the end (our main reasons for losing games is lack of runs). 75% of the firsts turn up to 0 nets all year, believe it or not. This has in no way contributed to me moving to a club who have regular well-attended nets...

From Jan an hour net session on a Thursday evening 9-10pm, about 20-30 turn up. During the season we train outside on a Wednesday night for a couple of hours, but less people turn up, maybe 10-15.
The odd season we will have a coach, but depends on availability (of a coach) and cost.

Where have you chosen Ed? All the best with it wherever you've gone for

Not definite as I haven't trained with them yet etc, but my other half plays at OBW - nice ground and seem like a decent bunch, good atmosphere etc, so barring winter nets going badly I'll be heading there. Thanks for the good wishes, hopefully all goes well and could see you in the league next season!

They seem to have a decent setup, was a shame our match there got rained off this year.
We've had a reprieve from the league so at present we'll be in the division above their 2s and well below their 1s but who knows with the way the leagues seem to change!

My old club - Pre-season nets where 5-7 attend. Fast bowlers try to knock your head off, other 'bowlers' aren't regular so generally struggle to hit the green bit. I didn't bother after my 3rd season, I worked with a coach then did 1-to-1 sessions with one of our actual bowlers who wanted to work on his line and length. Last season we tried to do an outside fielding session a few times but it descended into a mess about with everyone trying to alter drills.

During the season we didn't do nets except once or twice after a very bad performance. One session would definitely fix all the problems.

My new club seem to be the opposite. I know when nets are already and I expect them to be well run and constructive. It is certainly one of my main reasons for moving clubs. I find it very difficult to improve as a keeper just on my own with a bowling machine, it is good for some stuff but I can't practice run outs, diving catches etc.

@HallamKeeper by "fast bowlers" do you mean Dave? Lol.

Amusingly that in the t20 game we played, anything short was good for an lbw shout!

Ha yes, lovely Dave.

I don't mind too much but on an indoor wicket it certainly flies through a bit more than the April wickets.

Ha it's hard to keep up with the B&D sometimes! Yeah expecting I'll wind up in their 2s as the 1s is a higher standard than I've played before, although be a nice ambition to aim for some 1s games. Glad to hear you've been kept up though, can't imagine you were too happy when the league announced they were relegating extra teams.
