Title: Helmet Stats/Comparism's
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on January 21, 2010, 11:18:47 AM
Just putting together some stats for use on the new website and thought I would upload them on here as well....

Average Impact Forces- Results as per BSI tests carried out on the different brands of helmet. (The lower the reading the less impact being felt by the head inside the helmet).

Brand                              Average 1st Impact (g)       Average 2nd Impact (g)
Albion                                      57.33                             92.00
Masuri                                      61.33                             104.33
Ayrtek Elite ACIS                    22.00                                27.33
Ayrtek Premier ACIS               39.00                                53.00

Helmet Weights-Titanium Grill Models (Grams)

Brand                          weight (grams)
Albion                           686
Masuri                           681
Ayrtek Elite ACIS            602
Ayrtek Elite PCS             521

As you can see above our Safer, Stronger , Lighter strap line is backed up by results rather than just being a claim.  :)

Cool! This is pretty good info, will almost certainly get an Ayrtek for next season. All the Masuri fans (including myself) have something to consider.

great looking stats there, it would be interesting to know how they do it.  For example how fast are they hit and where etc.

Good info to show how good your Helmets are!

There focus on 4 main areas as specified in the BS Standard usually around the air vents as they view them as a point of weakness, they mount the helmets onto steel headform and then drop them from a height onto a metal anvil. Force plates inside the helmet record the deceleration by each model of helmet.

The reading have to be less than 250g otherwise the helmet is failed on that specific site, the minimum reading the machine is calibrated to record is 20g.....

50% of the results fell <20g for the Elite helmet
25% for the Premier helmet were <20g......

The other brands didn't have a single reading that fell below this level :)

This is repeated in 3 different climates...+50 degrees, ambient and UV to give a set of results under the different circumstances and ensure the helmets are safe in different environments etc.

Tom, with your new traditional helmet, will it be available is cloth covered?

People seem to want a cloth finish but this is going to add unnecessary weight to the helmet as the finish underneath it is smooth due to the manufacturing process. The cloth that is used on other brands is usually to mask imperfections etc.

If demand is such though forming a cloth covering shouldn't be a problem and perhaps we can incorporate this into the webshop to add as an option.

Ok thanks, tom. I was considering your traditional helmet this year but could come round to the idea of having a sprayed helmet again after my albion got bashed around.

I think it would be good to offer as an option.

Let me know what you decided and I may be in touch with you when I have some money. Need to get my ass off the chair and get a job!

Thanks

Yes they impact the different grills and providing they fall below the readings they pass them. This posed a few questions in regards to the weld positions of the Albion grill on the club mark helmet and as we were intending to use it at the time we had to revise the design to conform to BSI standards.

Different grades of steel/titanium are used and some contain very low % of each material described as you can imagine!

Maybe you can send Dravid one of your helmets.. I'm sure after a broken jaw he might take helmets a little more seriously..

Yeh heard about that think thats what prompted my post on the grill safety after thedon asked about if the grills need to pass a BSI safety standard! Depends on the grade of steel/titanium used as to the strength of the product and if its a high in steel content etc.

Some of the India players already have a helmet so it perhaps will prompt them to start wearing them....who knows!?!

how do you get a correct sized one if they only come in S-L and L-XXL.... does adjusting the velcro stop the wobble when tightening it at the rear of the head only to get an exact fit?

I saw that! Looked a nasty blow. Hopefully he'll recover, perhaps even invest in a better helmet!
Talking of protection, yesterday was inter-house football, and I was goal keeping. So one of the opposition players gets past our defenders, but then accidently knoced the ball a bit further than he could control, so I pounced on the ball, but he went for a shot, and I got kicked 1/2 an inch to the left of my left eye!

My Mum now suggests I wear something like an Aero KPR facemask for competition games!

Broke my Jaw in two places so i can vouch how much it hurts, had my jaw wired up for around 8 weeks, also split a tooth which was removed and i could only drink through a straw for the whole 8 weeks. I still remember the pain of when they were wiring me up and it makes me cringe.

Tom, maybe if you have time you can start another project and research NFL (American Football) helmets.. Alot of concussion this season and major talk about inventing better helmets.. As the players get bigger stronger and faster the helmets staying the same.. big money involved in the NFL..

Yer was hit by bouncer when i was 17 ? The bowler was from the west indies and was pro at a club in my area for many many years, he was rapid as quick as I've faced although it was not done intentionally on his part the wicket was not the best. Always wear a helmet now though and although i broke my nose to a spinner playing a sweep I've not been hit since.
