Title: Best material to round edges
Post by: SteffanLangholz on January 14, 2017, 04:01:54 PM
Hi guys
After advise here, as I've seen plenty of ways to round edges, I just want to know what seems to work best.

1: horse shin(or maybe metatarsal? What bone would be the right one?)
2: Ceramic, like a bathtub or whatever is similar
3: oak, lv, ebony stick?
4: Mallet (I don't particularly like this option)
5: Continously edging the ball during nets

What's your best way?

Thank you!

I use the bath tub initially and then the handle of my mallet.

Mallet works for me just fine. Just make sure you "time" rather than hard hit when you knock the edges at around 45 degree angles..

What do you do to the bat in the bath tub @Buzz ? Just press down on edge and move bat up and down? Does it work?

I use the kitchen work top as it's round and makes a really good job of the edges

Roll the edges with a wooden  pastry rolling pin

Rest the point of the edge at 45° to the rim of the bath and roll the bat up and down.

Bat grip cone also works

I am going to do a lot of bat knocking, hence the question. @Buzz, I don't have a bathtub, and it's a bit too expensive for my workshop.
@Seniorplayer I was thinking sort of the same. Mounting it so it's less hassle.

As for the hammerthing, I tend to be too rough, therefore looking at other options.

Bath tub every time... never cracked an edge in 30+ years of cricket

Gday Steffan. I see in your post that you DONT have a bathtub so thats obviously out. Im looking at setting something up myself. And you can achieve the same result if you just find something with a similar radius to that of the tub edge. Id look at getting a length of hardwood turned and polished up nice (oiled/waxed and buffed rather than lacquered). Id be inclined to have the bar turned to be gradually thinner in the middle just so that it'll encourage the bat to stay within the bar. And id mount it to my bench with one of these fittings at each end.

I've just run all 3 of my new bats down the bathtub! Cannot believe I didn't know this beforehand!!! Makes the entire process sooooooo much easier!!!

Do you run the toe across the bathtub too to round the toe or not bother? How do you get the corner where the edge meets the toe atop? Also, do you still then knock in the edges with a mallet even though they are now rounded nicely?

I just use a grip cone, hold it like a cattle's shin bone, put pressure on to it and rub it against the edges - it works amazingly.
I have found that the smaller the diameter of the rod, the better it presses (a smooth metal rod will also work). Too much pressure on a small diameter rod over the rod will press the edges too much and make them last too long but you won't be hitting huge sixes of your edges in that case lol!

Kangaroo bone was used on couple of my bats.
