Need some expert opinions on the following three related queries that I always wondered about:
Suppose I have a bat that weighs 2-12 say and sand it down to 2-9 or 2-10 by electric sanding on the face, does it affect the ping of the bat. I know the ping will be affected due to the weight loss, but what I wanted to know is, will the sanding affect the manufacturer's pressing effect/characteristics of the bat so as to degrade the ping?
Secondly, to reduce weight, is it better to sand the face of the bat (thereby risking altering the manufacturers pressing of the bat) or the back of the bat (thereby not affecting the face and the manufacturers pressing on face for the ping)?
Thirdly, to reduce weight by 2-3 oz, is it better to electric sand the bat all the way or use a plane instead with only final touches left for sanding?

I think you will be sanding for some time to remove 2-3 oz. you want to remove material from the back. I think you should take it to a batmaker to get it done. It's got 'disaster' written all over it otherwise.
Even better, just sell it and use the proceeds to fund another.

I've done loads
Easiest way is to remove an equal amount from the whole profile, (as long as it's not got a stupid thin toe)
A sander might take longer, but it's probably the safest way.
Electric planers are pretty good too
Best way is to be steady away with the weight removal, don't go stupid on one area
Testing pick up as you go
3 ounce is a lot to remove
My match bats probably had 4ounce off it this way

No sanding to reduce weight by 3 ounces using an electric sander does not affect the pressing do not sand the face of the bat remove 2 to 3 ounces from the back. Don't use a plane sand with electric sander and finish by hand with fine grit.Dont sand the spine of the bat to assist pickup sand the toe and each side of the spine equally working from the toe To halfway up the bat following he grains It's easy to do but can be some what time consuming so take your time as removing 3 ounce of wood from your bat is equal to cutting 2 inches off the bottom of the bat

Insane performance - light weight and is just ridiculous.
Like a couple of others have stated, I always think it's best to remove any weight from the back of the bat.

3 ounces is a lot of wood to get out a bat regardless. It's doable with a sander but will take a long time. Personally I think you are better off, sending it to someone to get it done and removing weight from the right areas to help the pick up and balance rather than trying to get a full 3 ounces out of it
