Title: Hard Case Coffins
Post by: ABello1 on January 31, 2017, 12:13:03 PM
Does any one still use the hard case coffin as was very popular in the 90's

I was thinking that as I have a load of cricket kit to keep in the attic of my new home over the winter months I was hoping I could pick one up here cheapish on the likes of Ebay or that the prices may be low ish but that doesn't seem the case

I have three coffins that I use at home.
They are excellent as they normally fit 20 bats in each. Are idea for storing bats although I don't store mine in the loft....I have a very small room and I turn the radiator off and use that room. But wouldn't use one for matches but would use them for storage!  ;)

Is that my old one Pete?

Great in theory, as my kit would never run the risk of being damaged. Not so great when it had to be maneuvered into, then filled my car boot

Can't remember Cam. There is the Robin Smith England coffin, a great silver one with chunky wheels and a blue one too.
And used for storage only  ;)

When I was a kid, getting a county colts sticker for your coffin was deemed "making it".  The county didn't realise that not all of the kids actually HAD coffins - and that half of us were actually given equipment deals with canvas bags but hey ho!

I had a black Duncan fearnley hard coffin. Was utterly brilliant but people hated giving me lifts as it would take up all the space in thier boots!!

I have got myself one over the winter that I plan to use this season.  Mine is from Stretton fox.  Not sure it could be classed as an eBay bargain but I can't wait to use it.

I have a County one from the 90s - still going strong, I paid a little extra for the more sturdy version & still use it.
Over the years it is no longer deemed 'large' most bags are now way bigger - easily fits in the boot of the car.
Still add various stickers (like @Manormanic ) and it fits all the kit you could need in (unless you are a wicket keeper)
There was a lovely one on eBay recent for £50 but was all the way up in York, but they do come up for sale!!!
I could do with some sturdy foam bits for holding 2 bats in the lid if anyone has any ideas?

@t2ylo try your local fabric shop, they usually sell different thickness of foam and can cut to size

There's a place behind national tyres on the Wellington Rd in Taunton that cut foam to size. Can't remember what they are called but they have a big sign outside advertising this service.

You really can't go wrong with Stretton Fox;

I rate them highly, George is wonderful person to deal with so you can't go wrong whatsoever. They come in leather and non-leather, I had gotten second one few weeks ago.

Thanks for the help - purchased foam & cut to shape in Taunton
Now need two bat shaped holes unless there is a better way
Any more help/ideas appreciated

Soft foam in particular is notoriously hard to cut. So if you find a good method let us know. Where did you get the foam from? Could you get them to cut the bat shaped holes?

The Foam Shop Livingstone Rd Taunton TA2 6BD
I asked about cutting holes there but the best they could do was the big rectangle
Its a perfect fit - the question really is two full bat shaped holes or cut down and have a gap in middle with template for handles & toes (not explained very well as all)
I have a volunteer ready to give it a try

Thanks Tom - you did indeed! The yellow stickers are on the bat I shaped myself. And the pink ones are on the Younis bat.
Very nice stickers as always Tom  :)

With me moving to the UK shortly and not trusting airport staff to not abuse the crap out of my current bag, I think a coffin case would be best to protect my gear.

Anyone know of anywhere to get a coffin case in Australia? Or anyone from Australia ordered one before? I was thinking either a Stretton (if IJC ship them as getting one made up and sent across in a month and a half is optimistic) or a Duck and Run one would be my options.

Got the Duck and run case and it is awesome. I was initially told it would be made and then shipped out on the 22nd of Feb, but it was very quick

Ordered 8th of Feb, shipped on the 11th (so it was made in 3 days) and arrived on the 17th. As soon as I opened it I got a massive whip of glue so that tells me it was recently made at least.

Good service and a good bag.
