Title: Doweling Toe
Post by: langer17 on February 03, 2017, 01:11:57 AM
Does the size of the dowel matter? Have a canon of a bat that one of the Kookaburra sponsored players at the club had but part of the toe busted off. I glued it back together and have sanded it and it has come up really nicely but I want to dowel it now.

I've done it before (One of Jodie Fields broken bats) with a a bat I didn't really care about as it was SM and ended up using that as a backyard bat, but seeing as this bat is genuinely really good I want to dowel it properly.

You want to make sure the dowels aren't too big for the size of the toe. For example if the toe was 10 mm at the edge don't use a 9-10mm dowel. Always leave enough space is what I've found best so for the most part I use 6mm dowels

Yes Toms right don't weaken the toe by drilling to big a diameter I did this  and it caused me more work.

Do I have to use the same amount of wood filler as him, or can I just use a dowel that fits the hole properly? ??? :-[

Used bamboo cane as a dowel (5mm thick). Took a few Yorkers on 70/75mph on Monday, couldn't feel a weakness. unfortunately that bat is now in contention a match bat.......tooo many bats!

The Goldilocks porridge approach applies here - not too small, not too big, needs to be just right!

Cheers for the suggestion guys :)

As the doweling options were 6mm or 8mm, i went with 8mm as the toe/edge are rather thick so plenty of room either side of the hole. Will see how it goes
