Title: South West March nets
Post by: edge on February 11, 2017, 01:33:36 PM
Hello gents, after we had a small net last winter and another impromptu one this week it seems there's plenty of us in agreement that a bigger southwest forum net would be a good plan. SO - I propose a 2/3 hour net sometime in March, say the weekends 11/12th or 18/19th? Could also do a weeknight around the same time if the consensus goes that way. For venue, I'll suggest either the Gloucestershire ground we've used previously, Merchant's Academy in South Bristol, or Warminster which has been mentioned on here before - @DorsetDan did you ever net there?

Anyone is welcome who I'll either miss tagging or indeed who doesn't live in the southwest but wants to come along anyway!
@mcgill123 @spoonbed @d7bow @jamesisapayne @t2ylo @Ayrtek Cricket @neoncricket @frooper11 etc etc

Count me in mate, I've not heard of Merchants before, that could be a decent option especially if we are having one lane bowling one lane machine.

Sounds good to me.

My gentle off breaks can get everyone into form before the season starts!!!

Can bring big son too if you fancy some quicker stuff, but he considers all bats are the same & that looking at pictures of strangers willow is a bit "weird"

Yep up for that( pretty sure can do any date, but we net on a Sunday 5-6)

Watching this. I'm in Taunton, if others are from the area and fancy sharing a lift etc, I may be in. I play hockey most Saturdays, but I think I will be done by then.

Yep count me in! Warminster works best for me personally but can probably do any of the above.

@DorsetDan - Warminster ey? Might be seeing you on the field at some point in the season then!

Shaping up well by the looks of things! Subject to change let's pencil it in for the 11th-12th weekend if that suits everyone?

8 people interested so far so two nets, one with bowling machine would probably work well if the numbers are around that, so Merchant's or Warminster are probably the best bet due to easy bowling machine availability. I'm open to either, does it make a big difference for the Somerset members' driving time? Merchant's is here https://goo.gl/maps/UeGRYPD1vKt

Off the top of my head I think Warminster may be booked out Sunday morning. Sat afternoons are usually free I think. @edge can you check Brizzle availability and I check the same for Warminster?
That'd be good cheers @DorsetDan , I'll check today

Numbers look good, will be great to see new faces and old alike!

I've tried to book it in online but apparently don't have permission despite booking a session before...does anyone else have better luck if they try from new?

Cost should be ~£70 all in so £10 or less each I guess...

If no-one else is able to book either I will phone up and get it sorted

You need to be a club member to book online wierdly - although as I understand club members can get the hall dirt cheap (I've netted with a few of the Trowbridge lads that are friends with the Warminster lot and it was pittance then from memory).

Looking forward to it! Shame about the bowling machine if we can't use it but never mind. I'll bring a sidearm in case two hours is too much to bowl, I've got 3 more hours of nets scheduled for later in the day 🙈

Looking forward to it. Though nets Friday, hockey Saturday then nets Sunday may play havoc on the arthritic knees. I'll bring my sidearm.

It's not too much hassle to bring as long as it's OK with the venue?
Would the other guys prefer 2 lanes of bowling or 1 bowling/1 machine?

Yeah very enjoyable today, good to see people and meet some new faces. Plenty of good bat chat, @procricket gave the bowling machine a good belting, Warminster locals thought we were a bit weird having so many bats, @DorsetDan tried telling everyone he hasn't played cricket for years again - noone believed him again ;) We were all pretty impressed by @jamesisapayne 's bat crafting skills and a good net had by all, always be up for more! Cheers to Dan for getting it booked and getting them to find the keys and let us in ha.

Dorset is one of the best strikers of a ball for someone who has not played for 'years'   :)

God knows what he would be like if he actually practised regularly. A sort of mini trescothick.

Thanks a lot everyone I had a thoroughly enjoyable morning! Not enough time to have a good net and look through all of the quality willow on display properly though - next time we should make it 2 hours nets and 2 hours bat talk over a pint!

Thanks very much for sorting @edge and 'I haven't payed for years but bowl nippy outswingers on the spot and middle everything' @DorsetDan, that's a great setup at Warminster.

James has certainly a eye for it his match bat was brilliant I thought

Thanks for the kind words @procricket, much appreciated. Would love to have a bowl at you next time too ;)

Finally got round to uploading the images I took on Saturday's net. They're not amazing quality as the lighting wasn't great at the end of the nets and I've got an older iPhone but it should give you a bit of a clue about the setup and bats on show.

A great time was had by all, and everyone certainly knows which end of a bat to hold and how to bowl straight that's for sure - next time we'll have to get some evidence on video to prove it!
