I know we - mostly - all want as big a bat as possible for the weight, and some are even prepared to go way over their usual weight for a big bat if the balance is right but are people really so obsessed over it that 1-2mm makes the difference.
I have lost count of the times on here I've seen someone looking for a bat and the edges have to be at least 52mm, 25mm at the toe, 17mm at the shoulder etc. Does anyone really pick up a bat, have a hit with a mallet and then think, nah, edges are only 51mm, not having that?
I think I like a big bat as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure I've ever even measured the edges of my bats, nevermind ordered a new ones based on it. Is it just because we can?

Well.. I have a set of well functioning bats. Buying a new one is redundant for me, unless it ticks a box I fancy ticking. In this case it could be edgesize.
But no, if the bat goes, I don't give a hoot about its looks.

I think a lot of it has to do with " Mine is bigger than his "

It just strikes me as a touch odd to buy someone custom made from a world class craftsman and then impose a set of restrictions upon him.

A little knowledge is dangerous, I guess?

Big edge is just fashion I think, certainly I had bats back in the 80s / 90s with relatively thin edges and they went like trains. In my little workshop I find myself following the fashion, I guess because it is what people ask for. Inevitably this will turn back at some point, players will want to ask for 'traditional' style bats in order to be different.

Maybe it's just what somebody would like? I don't particularly need a new bat at all (who does) but am on the look out for a large bit of willow that is just large! It's the same reason people buy 50+ or Warner bats.
Do I think it will make me a better player? Absolutely not. Do I want it as a vanity project, absolutely!

When I was growing up (70s and 80s) the sign of someone with a really good eye was a player who could bounce the ball on the edge of the bat at least 10 times. That doesn't appear to be quite as much of a challenge anymore ...

I can do 50 with a thin-edged bat, even in my late forties, so I must have a very poor batting technique?

:D Never said it was a fool-proof identification system. I certainly used to do far better with that test than any on-field batting performances.

Might be interesting to see if you asked a batmaker to make you the best shape he thinks(the batmaker) with only the price to pay and a weight what shaped bat you would end up with?
And how many of us on the forum would be happy with the end result.
So...if they had a blank canvas totally apart from weight and price.
I don't know myself... If I was to guess it would be a bat with smaller edges. :)

Isn't that just any 'off the shelf' bat?

That would be what the batmaker thinks will sell best, not necessarily what he thinks is best!

I suspect it would be close to a traditional shape.
