So, I bought a 'Cricket bat with Salix stickers' off eBay, and it arrived yesterday. According to the eBay listing the seller bought it in a job lot of stuff and wasn't sure whether it was a genuine Salix or just another brand bat with Salix stickers on. To be honest, I'm not sure either! Some things about it are quite Salix-y, others aren't. Would welcome forum expertise on the matter, it's got quite a distinctive handle end which I'm sure should place it somewhere. Possibly @SOULMAN1012 could shed some Salix light on it? Confident the stickers are genuine, has possibly had a refurb in the not too distant past as there's some rough patches. That said, the finish probably wasn't helped by myHermes leaving it outside my front door in the pissing rain yesterday...
So, the bat. Grains are mixed, really quite nice on the inside half of the bat and a bit of a dog's dinner the other side towards the toe. Handle is a very thick semi oval which is right up my street so pleased there. Slightly odd feel tapping it up with a mallet to be honest, but response with a ball is good, definitely a nice middle on it. With a grip on it comes out a little over 2.12, my kind of finished weight, and picks up nicely with a good balance to it.

Shape - looks plausibly Salixy? Long spine all the way down to the toe, slight bow. Not big edges but a good bit of depth in the spine. A little concaving but not too much. Toeguard on so I can't check for binding lathe mark.

Shoulders/handle - again look not dissimilar to usual Salix from pictures, but I don't have another one to compare with. Little bit of filler under the binding, and an unusual shape knob I'm sure I've seen before but can't quite place.

So, the verdict! Is it a Salix? You tell me, I'd definitely be interested to hear from people who know more about their bats than me.
Is it a good bat? I think so, certainly for 99p :D I'll obviously reserve full judgement until I've had a hit with it, but it's got a nice handle, is my weight, picks up well and seems to respond well out of the middle - I'm happy! If nothing else it'll make a top quality net bat and I'll see how it performs from there. Beat that, bargain hunters!
-
ohhh this is interesting :) well 'beat that bargain hunters' no one can for 99p so you win allround, it's beers on you !!
the top of the handle does not look like a Salix shape to me, ive had a few of these bats and got one now, they are more 'square'
shoulders wise again doesn't look like a Salix shape, hard to explain but just looking at this one don't look quite right.
far as the shape of the bat goes I really like it, and to my uneducated eye it looks UK made. How can you tell that....I dunno !!! just gut feeling
the 'SH' on the top of the handle and that round shape to it is very interesting, I recognise that style but not sure from where.
any road up this is a win win :)

Maybe it was rehandled... PLOT TWIST
-
Regardless what it is a bat for 99p is still a bargain. It has a 'grade one' sticker on the front and to me it is not a grade 1. However, I've never heard of Salix selling stickers and I can't imagine they would put the stickers on a refurb of another brand either.
I've never had a Torque and I might be wrong, but doesn't it have a slightly shorter than average blade and longer handle?
-
Maybe it was rehandled... PLOT TWIST
yeah that did cross my mind!! :)
do youn recognise that top part of the handle style? I do....I just cant place it.....
what a great thread
-
Warsop old model possibly for the round style handle(top part)
:)

Yeah all fair points, agree for some reason I think it's UK made but probably not a Salix! Someone will know, I'm sure haha.

Oh dayum, don't make it more complicated!

haha quality !! the cat @FattusCattus will love that
-
on the handle shape... i had an Adidas incurza which i believe were sg made that had a very similar handle knob shape but as you say could have been re-handled
-
Salix toe shape Salix binding with an early Salix handle and up dated stickers

Somewhere @FattusCattus' head just exploded :D
You can't use that phraseology in conjunction with a knob gag!!! :o
-

I wouldn't mind an unusual shaped knob if it was 2lb 12ozs!!!

I thought that as I was typing it but left it as a little extra for you :D
-
Edge be interested if @tom line aka junior TK has any comment on the binding
all may be revealed :)
-
Does it look Kashmir willow to anyone else??
-
Yeh, looks like a cheap oldish (10 years+) Indian made Kashmir bat to me.
-
Still 99p is a decent price for a set of Salix stickers :)
-
To me doesn't look a Salix, the handle doesn't look right and the shoulders aren't quite right either to me. As well as this Salix are known for not having toe guards and being really hard to fit toe guards to as they have a rounded toe, so the toe guard implies to me it's not a genuine Salix, they do give out stickers on refurbs if you take it to them for a refurb, they will put stickers on if you ask, I've known them do it for several people in the leagues local to me
-
The Salix bats that do have a toe guard are usually salix own brand so the Salix symbol can be seen in my experience.
Also from a knob point of view (leave it Bruce!) here are knobs which have been mentioned!
Older Salix type like this......
has this knob....
A newer Salix has this shape of knob....
And will even include an Adidas knob for variety....
I never thought I would ever spend time taking pictures and comparing shapes of knobs!! :o
-
As tom line says the shoulders don't look Salix
-
Mrs Hosk: Pete what are you doing?
Pete: Just taking knob pictures for people on the internet, won't be long
-
really good quality photos of the knobs

More worried about others:
Policeman: Mr Hosk - we have been informed that you have been uploading some questionable photos of knobs onto the Internet?
Me: Yes Officer. I often upload photos of knobs, shafts, and nice "wood" for my fellow chums on the internet - I also encourage some of the younger members to post photos of their wood too. In particular I find this is good for the younger members on the forum and I love looking at their photos!
Policeman: You don't have to say anything, but anything you do say may be..............
Me: Heh?

You know, as I typed the words 'unusual shape knob' this morning, I just knew this would happen! The only surprise is that it mostly hasn't involved Fattus...

And let's not have a knob photo competition ;)

It's all your fault.. You whipped out your knob first
-
@edge , the top of the handle looks interesting to me. How many pieces does it have?
The shoulders and the top of the handle are very TK-ish. Meh, about the face of the blade though.
Let us know how it plays.

Gordon Bennett it get's better. It's a possible Keeley !!! :o :o :o :o
holy cow thought i's seen it all on the forum this tops the lot :)
-
Doesn't have the tell tale TK glue.
-
I'm almost certain it's not English made, the handle is too cheap and it's not EW.
If guess would be an oldish Champ 'EWNI' bat.
-
This show you better @InternalTraining ? Not at home atm so don't have any photos without the SH sticker.

Theres no way thats a TK handle.

No worries, from the original angle, it appeared to have a marbled TK-ish look. This picture is clear.

EW? What's "EWNI"?
-
EW? What's "EWNI"?
English Willow
and
English Willow Nurtured in India

TK glue? More info. please.
They use or used type of animal glue that leaves a shiny yellowly look to the twine.

@edge I'm afraid that is not an original salix. As has been mentioned the handle is not a salix handle and neither is that binding done at salix from the pictures the twine looks all wrong.
As for the stickers they have never been sold separately by salix but they did put a few sets on bats they refurbed From older models if the person was maybe buying a salix as well. On odd occasions genuine salix stickers have come up on eBay but the source of how they came by these would have to be questioned.
Any bat for a £1 is good deal but I'm afraid that isn't a genuine salix bat in my opinion

Thanks mate, I suspected as much and most of the posts confirmed it but useful to hear a verdict from someone who really knows the brand. Now, I wonder what it really is! Also with all this speculation I really want to get in a net ha...
-
im a bit deflated Dr Edge, it could of been the greatest bargain ever on the forum. it's not a Salix , it's not a TK....it's got an old style knob type handle
but it's the right weight, potentially could have some PING
and it was 99p.
happy days.

I bought some original stickers off of eBay about 12-18 months ago, weirdly from Australia

agree very much
-
Yeah!! 'This place is full of knobs' said one disgruntled CBF member
How wrong could they be? Haha :)
-
I dont think it is salix. If it is then been restickered and rehandled?
-
So, artificial nets were a bit wet and I actually had a hit with this today... not a bad bat at all! Makes an odd noise, but lovely balance to it and it pings surprisingly well, unlikely it'll ever see match use from me but it's a very tidy net bat.
