I broken my thumb recently. I find squeezing a squash ball a good way to increase grip strength.

Yup, squeezing balls gently with a pulsing motion, increasing the pressure gently as you feel like you are getting somewhere. Rotating 2 balls around the palm of your hand can also enhance the effectiveness of the exercise. Squeezing the balls together using the base of your thumb and the centre of your palm can also produce spectacular results.

You could try the following :
Gently bend your wrist forward and hold for 5 secs repeat 15 times then rest
Gently bend your wrist backward and hold for 5 secs repeat 15 times then rest.
During the exercise If your hand or wrist becomes painful cease the exercise.

Had to re read that...I originally wondered what my socks had to do with it !

mother in law had surgery on tendons in hand and had socks to squeeze as part of her recovery!

as above, socks, stress ball, then on to what we call a Kanga ball in AUS, basically the rubber ball that the kids use when first initially starting the game, then on to a tennis ball.
Thats what my physio said for me
