Title: Something a little different and special (Now Updated with pics & Review)
Post by: Calzehbhoy on September 08, 2017, 09:34:51 AM
My bat purchasing has become something of an obsession this year and I have gone up and down the weights when buying.

Owning too many bats now and the wife starting to question why I'm spending quite so much on cricket bats when I only played 5 times this season I decided that I wanted something a little special and definitely different as possibly my last purchase for a while.

Bat has been ordered this morning and is due with me Tuesday.

Any guesses at what it may be?

Very close @smilley792 . It is a Hunts County Serbian Willow. Anybody that knows don't give it away but any guesses on the finished weight (without stickers)

Haha! No worries at all @GDP1964 . Have to admit it was the post from Sivlar and your subsequent commments that convinced me to part with the money for it.

Just looked at the weight on FB, dear lord! Where can one get one's hands on this Serbian stuff? Imagine the bat you could make at 5 ounces heavier...

If only I could wield one that heavy @edge would be like wielding a whole tree!!

For those that haven't checked Facebook, finished weight is 2lb 6.8 ozs.

Keep us posted on the performance/ping etc. of this bat and how much value you get for your shots in the field.

Bat arrived this morning and I have to say it is just unbelievable! The volume of wood for a bat this weight defies belief (Especially as it is slightly wider that a regular SH @ 109.8mm)

Vital Details -

Weight - 1117g (2lb 7ozs)
Grains - 12 (almost dead straight through the toe)
Edge Size (Edges are really well rounded) - 43mm
Spine (Approx) - 72mm
Edge Of Toe - 26mm
Middle Of Toe - 39.2mm
Shoulders - 20.3mm

Tapping a ball up it seems to respond nicely but does need a decent knocking in.... Enjoy the pics....

Finally had a chance to tap and ball up and also started the prep on this for next season.

Rebound was excellent considering it's not even started having any knocking in done on it, really impressed with the initial performance.

Given it 2 coats of light oil, 3 on the heartwood and the grains have come out too.

Really impressed and encouraged by the early signs!

After speaking a lot with Matt at Hunts, my 2lb 10oz one turned up today. Stunning shape and size. Will try and get some pics up soon.

I may also have 'accidentally' had a parcel drop through my door yesterday :D

Put it this way, I have a few 2.12s in hand that I thought were big for their weight. This one is 2.10 and it dwarfs them... will be interesting to see how long it lasts, but it's certainly a promising start.

Will get some pictures up for you all later

Edges rounded, around an hour knocking in and all the tape/scuff applied. Finished weight all in is 2lb 8oz exactly.

Bat was fairly soft pressed from the amount the edges compressed when rounding (despite them already being rounded by Hunts). Did find the extra layer or oil on the hheartwood really helped keep it intact when I did the rounding and stopped cracking from occurring, made it a lot easier to knock in too.

Another hour or so knocking in with the scuff and tape on and should be ready to go.

Would PVA work to protect the toe from moisture and maybe reduce the cracking (I'm quite a heavy tapper so find Shoe Goo just comes away)?

No. it will wear away too. A traditional toe guard may be your best bet.

No. the best way to avoid toe cracks is to block Yorkers and avoid toeing pulls and hoiks.

May I ask why you did round the edges again? You mentioned that hunts had already done so

Just for peace of mind?

I knocked them gently with the mallet and they indented a fair bit so although they were rounded it didn't seem like they were finished to me, I worked the mallet up and down the whole edge gently and you could see it indenting a few mm's so decided it was probably best to just get the bat on the bath edge and work it up and down.

Could you share the cost and information on getting in touch with Hunts?  Would love to find out if it is possible to get similar 2.7 bat.
