Lots happening in the current round of matches, despite Essex having secured the 1st division title. Lots of wickets falling
Essex all out for 76 - now following on (too much celebrating?)
Rory Kleinveldt has just taken 9-65 to give Northants a lead of 40 odd over Notts
19 year old Kiran Carlson has just scored 191 for Glam v Gloucs.
Must get back to work...
-
It's all been happening, Middlesex were 89/7 yesterday with 4 out of their top 5 having played Test cricket within the past few years, had to rely on the bowlers to get them to a decent score.
-
From an prospective England Ashes Test squad point of view.....
Stoneman hit a half century so no harm there!
Westley was out early in his first innings - is on 10 and still batting but needs to get a big one and show form today!
Malan only managed 12 in his first innings and has just gone into bat in 2nd innings
Hameed managed 3 in his 1st inning so he may need to hit a few runs in his second innings as well!
Balance managed a 28 in his match so needs to push on if he gets a 2nd innings.
So only Stoneman hit any runs which is worrying, as this is their last chance to impress before the Ashes squad is announced!
-
I must disagree Pete. I think the selectors know these wickets will produce a result. All the work over the summer has been noted, as Jimmy was saying yesterday they have a few weeks off, then back to training and they fly out end of October. The selectors have an idea of their squad already there will be 2/3 that are fighting for a pair of tickets i reckon.
And judging by selections in the past i wont be expecting any really bold decisions?
-
It's too cold.

About the only surprise I could expect would be someone along the lines of Mason Crane/Jamie Porter. Realistically they aren't going to do this though as it's already been said they won't be taking anyone 'untested'
Expect the usual disappointing selections (Ballance/Rashid etc)
-
Notoriously selectors have picked one 'untested' player. Then again untested doesnt really define alot. If it was uncapped then that makes it more interesting. But Crane was with the squad and bowled at our batsman so is that testing?
-
I'd presume Crane would pass the 'untested' test being as they've had a chance to look at him already. What would be surprising is if it's someone who's yet to be in one of the 3 Eng squads (Test/ODI/T20).
There's plenty that deserve a shot off the back of their Domestic and Eng Lions performances, but the Ashes are the last place to be testing out new blood!
-
Yeah unless they back track to someone like Robson who has experience and is a much better batsman now than he was before...
You never know

Robson would be an interesting call. As he was brought up on Oz, his game would suit the wickets over there. Perhaps given the reluctance of Root to go up to number 3 and Westley not doing himself justice, Robson may be the experienced wild card to bolster the top three.

With the absence of any other suitable Number 3, it wouldn't be the worst call to be fair!
-
I'm not convinced by either Westley or Malan-i'd bat Hales at 5- but there aren't exactly guys banging the door down to get a place on the plane-which is slightly worrying!
-
For me Roooot has to bat at 3 (although he clearly doesn't want to), Bairstow (minus the gloves which is harsh but a necessary evil) at 4 and then Hales at 5. With Stokes at 6, keeper / batsmen at 7 and Ali at 8 it'd be entertaining

A variation on that. Malan for me is reasonable bet - has the temperament and a good back foot game. So:
Cook
Stoneman
Malan
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Hales
Ali
Woakes/Roland-Jones
Broad/Roland-Jones
Anderson

We just can't help ourselves on the forum its hopeless @Bats_Entertainment
Sangakara - is he really going to retire after this season? What a player
I dont suppose by any chance like really really slim chance....i mean....his wife is not English is she?
:D
-
Would be funny if Notts failed to get promoted.

Was a ton ever more inevitable?
He took a Nemesis shape Gray Nicolls out to practice today. (For the many on here interested in such things.)
Does a Kippax Wavex handle have a single spring, anyone?
-

i think they could lose both games and finish third.
northants are playing leicester next week so will fancy their chances.

Hmmm , yes .... good reason to pop over to the ashes thread i started and continue the banter there then ? :D

Notts and Northants looks interesting...

Doubt they will lose v sussex

i think with the players they have missing and if sussex get a decent pitch with a stronger seam bowling line up. i could see sussex winning.
im still hoping notts win tomorrow so that we can go out for celebratory drinks

Possible but our batting lets us down first inning more often than not

Assume you mean notts? What an tail! Archer has to be a decent shout for and england shirt soon! Averages over 40 with the bat and 24 with the ball!
As for Jordan's ton! What a knock!
Such a shame they cant get promoted now. Missed out twice this season with the T20 and now CC!

Archer looks a serious quality bowler, don't count your chickens before he qualifies for England though! Watching most of the Windies seam attack bowl this summer must have been both tempting and off-putting for him ha.
-
Looks like having been fortunate not to go down last year Hants are doing their level best to rectify that this week :o
Assuming Somerset win, Hants will have to hope they either tear through Warks 2nd inns and then bat well, or the weather ensures a draw, if they lose I think they are down?
-

He's been quoted that he'd like to play for england. I believe he qualifies next year too!

I didn't know that, good news! Won't qualify til 2022/23 though, seven years it takes now.

Yeah just read the timings. I thought he had been here pemenantly for a while but obviously not!
If england want him they will change it. Im sure australia tried the same with Kawaja? (Dont qoute me)
-
With all the hype of sanga retiring I think it's slipped under the radar a little but in what could be his final first class innings Chris read has hit 124 and another knock to possibly salvage something for Notts! He's been a great asset to Notts for a long long time! He will be missed! Not looking forward to seeing who keeps for Notts next year! Better not be daddy's boy moores
-
I can't believe Northants (my team) have literally missed out on promotion by the 5 point deduction for slow over rate against Notts (who got promoted). So frustrating :( :(
-
Youuuu Pearrrrsss!
-
Well done to Hants for batting out today for the draw and avoiding the drop. Worth noting that much of the hard work was done by Vince - batting for 159 minutes facing 124 balls for just 30 runs.
Interesting to see that just 2 points separated 4th (Yorks) from 7th (Mids) and relegation.
-
A paltry 2 wins for Surrey secures 3rd. Though the most important thing was Somerset pulling off a real Houdini to avoid relegation. Credit goes to the most unlucky person not to get picked for the ashes tour (jack leach). I think he has been the top county spinner for the last 2 seasons.
-
Eight sides and two down needs looking at.
And Leach still appears to, ERM, straighten his arm in delivery...

I'd be curious to see any recent footage to back that up?
-
In the few times I've seen him bowl I can't see anything wrong with his action. I know he was a right chucker in the past though.

He has a smoother action than he used to, for sure. But the two times I have seen him bowl this season, there have been deliveries where there has been a very obvious kink in his action, and he persists in wearing long sleeves even on the hottest of days...

The biggest thing about Leach for me is that i believe the selectors worry about that he is playing on bunsens at Taunton so they are always just seeing and hearing about that and they therefore question his ability to bowl on flat pitches - which the majority of time is what you get at test level.

so we need to look at his figures away from taunton that will give a pretty decent understanding - he surely doesnt just play home games?

No he doesnt but he pretty much only performs there
-
It was interesting at the Oval that Dom Bess took over as the frontline spinner and Tom Abell bowled as many overs of his military medium as Leach did.

Here we go.... it was always going to happen...
'Middlesex to appeal relegation'

Uh oh. To be fair they may have a fair point. Though they have been aware of the points deduction for some time and should have made their case much earlier.
Nevertheless us carrot crunchers in the south west will be a bit nervous.
-
Pffft! I'm a Middlesex fan, but I say take the drop like men, should've won at lest one of the games they drew and should've batted better through the season to pick up more bonus points.
I wouldn't actually want to get re-instated on this basis, I'd rather come back up on merit.
-
There is no chance of getting the 2pts reinstated.
1. If it had rained they would have been deducted points
2. Ditto for bad light.
At the time Middlesex were 180 ahead with 33 overs left in the game, they weren't in a position to declare.
The talk is frustration and emotion. The fact is they should have bowled at the correct over rate or won a game they drew.
-
What are you doing on here - aren't you on the 'Isle of Fernando'?

Absolutely and today's news says the appeal has failed. One in the eye for those who may think Strauss/Fraser/Lords have an influence down South.
It's Div 2 and they will have to crack on next year and do it on the field. all sorts of things may come up during the season if they uphold appeals all over the shop it's a mockery of promotion and relegation.
And I'm a Middlesex fan too!
