What guard do people take on here and why? Also how much importance do you put on taking a guard?
I used to take middle but found i was getting hit on the pads to many times, so i started taking middle and leg and i feal i can play off my legs better.
-
I take middle, but my stance is probs more at leg stump.... not sure why i do that, its just what im used to. Im pretty good at knowing where my stumps are so dont see any reason to change and ask for leg...
-
I Take Middle And Leg, Prefer Playing Through The Off Side, Just Feel That Lil Extra Helps.
Opens My Stance Slightly Aswell.
-
I take middle as i always used to get bowled when i took leg stump
-
I take two (middle + leg) but my trigger takes me onto about middle/ middle and off.
-
I used to take two but now i take leg because i didnt get my trigger movement right when i batted on leg so i was getting bowled all the time but now i bat on middle and have batted better.
-
I take 2 when the bowler is bowling over the wicket (around if left handed) and leg if other side and walk across to middle to play my shots.
-
i bat on middle and stand still as poss and concentrate on the ball
-
I take guard on off, and then trigger to around middle and off. I was umpiring a under 15s yesterday and a lad came in and sked for off. once he took up his stance he was standing abou 1-2 inches outside off with his leg stump showing, after his first ball i asked him if he knew where he was standing but he said he was happy. 2nd ball and he got bowled leg stump.
-
Used to stand middle, but trying a trigger movement atm, so start middle/leg sometimes even leg.
-
middle. that or nothing
-
middle and leg, kept getting caught
-
I take 2 legs (middle & leg) to right arm over .....that means my feet tend to be on leg stump, with a slight trigger across to two legs.
For left arm over I take leg stump to avoid being bowled around my legs.
Sometimes I will take leg stump to right arm over.... normally when I'm going well and want to open the offside up a little more.
-
I take middle but I'm often given out LBW after not getting forward enough to the inswinging ball.
-
a friend of mine asked me about a week ago, i said middle but actually i shuffle to off stump because i like clipping it to my offside
-
To any sort of spin (left/right over/round off/leg) I take leg stump as I feel this way it opens up your playing cross batted shots and of course the trusty slog when the time comes.
To left arm over or right arm round I play them as if they are bowling straight at me so my bat will usually be around off stump because of this.
Against right arm over and left arm round I have middle and off because when I miss the ball it will hit my pad which still leaves me a chance of being given not out unlike being bowled. I do this because I trust myself off my pads too.
-
Bit complicated for me!! It obviously works for you, but if a coach tried to tell me to do all of that i wouldn't bother.
-
Are Juniors taught about guards these days? I notice that 99% of our clubs juniors take middle stump... not got an issue with that guard really but just wondered if they had been told to take it... I get the impression they are taking it for the sake of any guard will do.
-
I was never taught about guards - I just took middle as thats what everyone else did in U10's. More recently as I have learned through forums and reading books I have began to experiment with guards but never have I been taught or advised.
-
I bat on leg when the bowler is bowling around the wicket (easier to put through the offside), then for over the wicket, i take middle. often stray around a bit but oh well :)
-
i take middle, which is different to most of my mates my age. slightly off topic, but how does everyone mark out their guard? boot? bat? bail? do you mark it on the crease line, behind or in front?
-
I take 2 and always mark it out from the crease with my boot, although there was an occasion last year where a nipper decided to do a Chanderpaul and take the bail off which was different I suppose!
-
haha i've always wanted to do a 'Chanderpaul!'
-
I just mark it with my spikes.... I tend to re-take my guard whenever a new bowler comes on even if its the same guard as its my way of getting myself to concentrate again and part of my routine.
-
I just mark it out with my front spike on my boot starting from the front line on the crease.
-
iv got a habit of re marking my guard everytime the strike has changed!
for example if im off strike and i run a single, i naturally just mark my guard out straight away
-
There is a similar topic elsewhere at present.
It becomes a question of what is more important, your guard or your movement to play the ball and what you play at and what you let go.
From middle you can open or close your stance depending on how the bowling is bowling to you.
As an umpire there is almost nothing more annoying than someone wants to remark his guard constantly. lol. Middle is marked by the front spike, simple procedure.
-
i only ask the umpire for a guard once at the start of my innings, and just mark over the top of my original line.
-
I take 2, but my front foot is on two, my back on middle, so my bat is on off stump
-
Leg... stand outside leg... trigger movement means I end on leg.
-
dobbs thats werid man
-
What can I say, I'm a weird guy, I volunteer to field at silly mid off.
