Hi, I am increasingly playing T20 cricket and was wondering if there are any benefits to having a T20 cricket bat (much shorter blade, longer handle). I understand the logic but having never played with one, not sure how beneficial it is. Secondly, anyone has any experience of Phantom T20 bats? Keen on trying given they are made by an exceptional bat maker. Thanks for all your help.

@addu84 I had one custom made by @Red Ink Cricket and it turned out really good - 1.5 inch shorter, meatier bat, just pings everywhere and gives you so much confidence seeing all that wood. You can actually use a 1 inch shorter blade for conventional cricket, you barely notice the difference. You might with the Phantom as it's 2 inches shorter but I can't see any drawbacks of a shorter when batting, you just get used to it. Unless you have bowlers regularly targeting your throat at 70mph or higher, you should be fine.

I have a mongoose mmi3, a Bulldog which is between the mongoose and a regular bat and I have a Red Ink wich is about an inch shorter in the blade than a standard SH..
With the red ink it is virtually identical to a standard bat and I don't find any difference when batting.
The bulldog and mongoose are quite significantly different. On a low bouncing track it's not a problem as you can still play short balls off of the front foot. However, I wouldn't want to be using them when fending quick bowling off of my ribs and the shorter length means you need to be a bit quicker on the pull.

@addu84 best thing is to go and pick the style of bat up, its ask to do with preference, some can use them, some can't.
Maybe have a net with a team mates one against the bowling machine?

I'd agree with this, I hit mostly long down the ground and in theory some sort of shortened blade should have suited my game perfectly, but i grip the b at in relation to the shoulders, so in reality I just couldn't get on with it at all.

Having used a 1.5 inch short blade last season, I personally didn't see any difference in performance between a normal SH and the 1.5 inch short blade SH. So much so I'm going back to using a standard SH again in 2018 - having more weight in the shoulders picks up far better IMO.
But if big edges are your thing, then the 2 inch short blade will clearly help with this (I say this when my own 2.8 SH has 41mm edges and a 69mm spine lol).

Thanks for all your responses. Clearly, the jury is out on this issue. I have noticed my game improved having moved from a standard length blade to one that is 2cm shorter. That is what got me thinking. I take the point regarding shoulder less blades resulting in slightly bottom heavy feel. I guess a really thick handle can compensate to some extent. I have asked around. I will share pics once I have purchase a T20 bat and will let you know how I get along with it.

Yes, it depends on your technique/height/strength etc. whether you will like it or not. I couldn't get on with 1 inch shorter blade, didnt feel confidant facing shorter rising balls though it could just be psychological. Also, I had found the hands location fidgety with the longer handle -> if i held higher, i felt tennis elbow and if i held in middle/lower, i had to bend more for fuller balls affecting my balance, so reverted back to regular SH for all forms and it works for me..

I picked up a combat not too long ago, it did pick up well and tap up well (most bats do though..) I wasnt a fan of the long handle.
Alex at Dunamis makes a nice mid/low bat thats ballanced well, As does H4L. I prefer to go on feel anyway so best get yourseld around to pick a few bats up

If your not tall a shorter bat can stop you hitting the ground when you swing through he line of the ball.

ive used a mongoose mmi3 for all midweek games for the last 6 years. its really good fun using it especially as i normally open the batting.
i dont think ive scored any more runs then i would with my h4l but its good fun

I have used B20 from Blank Bats and it performs really well with super light pickup. 2-9, 46mm edge with Mid middle.

I've used an affinity toro for the last four seasons
One of the best bats I've ever had
The shape,handle length etc promotes bat speed and is perfect for the low slow wickets I play on.
