Mine are just starting (about to leave).
I generally HATE them, I find the lights poor, the run ups too short, the bowling maniacal, and the actual bowling tedious (it doesnt turn much on the stupid mats!).
But, I guess it prepares my very unfit frame for the 400 overs I will begin to send down in 2 months time!
What do you like/ dislike/ work on in indoor nets???
-
I hate the lighting, unpredictable mats and the fact there is a climbing wall at the bowlers run up so when your batting you cant see red balls so have to use crap white ones instead!!
-
I do sometimes question my sanity in actually going. I mean, its Sunday night, 7.00 and I could be having a nice roast and decent bottle of red, savouring the last of my weekend!!!
-
I think the nets we use are very good, nice run up, good lighting, just doesn't turn enough for us spinners, mind you i will still be saying that outdoors come August!
-
My county training started a fair few weeks ago. Generally we get some well lighted sports halls but the one we had today was a shocker! Picked the ball up really late through the air. But i didnt mind as my offies were ripping and bouncing today.
I do find nets a bit tedious though, after a while you get bored of the batsmen blocking you.
Got some one on one training in half term which should be very useful though...
-
well myne start on 21st feb i think but anyway what i normally do i use my slaz 3lb to perfect
those drives i normally use 2lb 6oz lol but it helps for sum strange reason but if im in last of the night
just enough time for a smash.
-
i hate starting in indoor nets , it takes me about a month to get back into it , and we have this seam bowler who just runs up and bowls bouncers every single ball , its so irritating cuz im trying to bat properly to get back into it! he does it every year..
-
been netting since around November and i agree most people thin there quick even the bloody spinners but hey i find only practise i like indoors is a 3 hour bowling machine session
-
i had nets this morning, we have the same general problems as you guys. small run-ups, bad light, the ball misses the mat and skids through on a wooden polished floor at about 200mph! ball stays low when it hits the mat, a brown coloured 'sightscreen!'
but to be honest im just happy playing again!
-
the mats are horrible tbh it all ways stays low argghh.
-
but to be honest im just happy playing again!
Couldnt agree more!
-
We net at the county ground (Glos) which starts on the 17th feb for 6 weeks. Not too bad in terms of run-up, lighting etc but a school the other side of bristol has better facilities (suprisingly) in terms of the sports hall available
-
i like using all my new kit and people going were did u get that from lol great feeling.
-
our mats are too short, lighting's fine and bowling tends to be in consistant. I still like it :)
-
must be lucky as a few of us net every winter from nov onwards in a very good school which spent a hell of alot of money on a purpose built cricket school with the floor imported from aus plays just like a normal hard track with 18 yd run ups enjoy them myself great time to work on the little stuff

writhlington?
-
roco where about is this school?
-
shrewsbury
-
Witheywood school mate..4 nets 2 bowling machines good lighting and 15-20 teds for a run up comparred to next to nothing at glos
-
ah, the good old pre-season nets, ours starts first week of march, and for the first time in a while I will be going to as many as I can, after all I need to get some practice with my new bat, problem is either you play against the 1st/2nd XI bowlers, or you face the friendly XI, although most of batsmen like to just go agressive in the nets, one once claimed he likes the nets because he can do what he doesnt do in the game. I dont like that theory and will do my usual process of blocking the first few before getting my eye in

Ian, where do have your nets, I take it you dont have yours at Taunton School like my club has because of the distance away
(btw, in case you wonder, I play for Bagborough CC, duno if you've heard of them in the West Somerset/Somerset leagues)
-
Love indoor nets but i suppose it depends on the quality of the facility but we are lucky to train at specific indoor cricket centre with superb lighting and no mats at all. England and the Windies trained there when they were playing at Durham as it was pretty wet during the test hence why they used the indoor school at South North.
-
I also get to train at a specific centre, Its where some of the surrey lads go and train in guildford Decent lighting, With very good bounce, Only downside is when you play your first
game in may the pitch doesnt bounce as nicely
-
Our indoor nets are the ones at SACA they are best going around.
-
I played against Bagborough last year - your in the Somerset league by the way, not the West Somerset league :) - Langport's my team.
Winter nets still dont start for another week for me - been playing indooe league cricket - they've changed venues already because it was so dangerous.........happy days!
Just about to start getting more specific with the weight training, i've found playing squash this year has given me much stronger wrists and that my top hand doesn't let my bottom hand take control. Hope netting goes well for everyone - best of luck for the upcoming season!
-
I think nets are great but they must be the worst way of preparing for the first game in april!
Our nets are well lit, very bouncy with good turn - so the bowler gets used to bowling back of a length, the batsmen get used to stepping back and playing the short ball.
Then we play on a dark April day on a slow and soggy pitch where the bounce is low and the short ball wont reach you!!

hi mate,
yeah played at bagborough a few times! played at your place last year and got 49 lol. we thought about having them somewhere in taunton but it makes sense to make do in minehead. i know crowcombe have theirs at the county ground, and stogumber used to have them at taunton school... cheers

actully mate we have our 1st in the Somerset league and our 2nds in the west Somerset. Never understood why, and my father is the former fixture sec and league rep for somerset league lol
-

their 2's play in west somerset league :D
-

was that a Sunday game? Because I do remember a guy getting out on 49. I wish we had the numbers so we could not make a loss is we went to the county ground. Taunton school isn't too bad, I did enjoy the place near Kingston.
Btw, if youplay here again I promise the wickets won't suck, I'm in the middle of a 2-3 year project to get the square in better shape. Poor grandad left It in a poor state
-
it was a league game, i played against your 2nds home and away. both pretty similar games.
i think your grounds really nice and that was the general feeling from all our players, ideal village ground. the wicket is a bit lopsided because of the hill but it still played very well.
did you play in either of these games??

Is your surname king or bishop by any chance?
-
Is your surname king or bishop by any chance?
Ok, you've got me, Its King
But Im afraid Im not "THE" King, I am his son
so In answer to Ian's question, im afraid I didnt play in those games
-
your the son of the legend Martin King? its an honour!
-
your the son of the legend Martin King? its an honour!
are you sure it's an honnor?lol
I knew ifi found someone from Somerset they would know kinger, after all, either good or bad, propels know kinger lol
-
Ian - do you have an umpire who used to play at your club who's a vicar or something like that - he umpired my match at the county ground and he has to be one of the nicest blokes you could ever wish to meet.
-
haha, yeah pretty much all of our team knew him when we turned up that day!
and dom yeah that would be Dick the Vic, also known as Rev. yeah he is a really nice guy! does a lot of umpiring here and also does a lot at the county ground, really decent bloke. everyone loves him at the club!
-
My old club used to come on tour down there and play the likes of Stogumber and Kilve, amybe Minehead too (cant remember), but we always used to end up in Butlins! Club is North Maidenhead is you know them?
-
i dont remember north maidenhead, but i presume they are from kent? we have a lot of teams come down to tour every season, including 3 last year from kent, ashford, dartford and chislehurst....
-
No thats Maidstone! Maidenhead is in Berkshire! Nver mind, I jut remember Butlins being a scandalous place to go!!
-
damn! how did i manage a B at GCSE in geography?! butlins... not a fan!
-
No, not a massive fan myself, but great for a horribly cheesy night out!
-
you know it would be nice if we got some photos of our net sessions just to show people as describing the venue is sometimes hard to picture
-
http://www.westsomersetonline.gov.uk/uploads/Sports%20Hallweb.jpg
this is where we have nets, you can tell straight away that the lighting is bad!!
the photo is on google images for some reason, type in sports hall and it comes up!
-
Start next Sunday. Can. Not. Wait.
-
I have been netting since the beginning of October after playing outdoor up to 18th of September. This week started with my club, maybe was a little cocky and batting was awful, bowling was good but not enough to recover form the awful batting. Just got into a local academy so will be there every other week doing 1 to 1 coaching up to the first game of the season. Will still be netting Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoon when I am not in the Academy on a Sunday

sounds good liam, netting 3 times a week cant be bad! would love it if we had nets more than once a week....
-
get yourself to my gaff mate i use the gym on base we have a free bowling machine and the lighting aint to bad and it got the ultimate wife replacement a auto feeder
-
I went to my pals nets on Saturday, first shot since September was a glorious drive back past the bowler all along the ground at a rapid rate, plus the bowler was fairly rapid.
Oh well at least I can tick that shot of for this season, didn't quite think it would be in febuary but there you go!! Perhaps I'll pull it out of the bag again before September
-
another net tomorrow! 3 in 3 days :D
-
get yourself in good nick Ian
-
I had 3 in 3 days, it's better in the summer when you have 5 games in 5 days xD.
-
in 2008 i had 14 games in 15 days! i was umpiring on the 14th game and i literally couldn't stand up!
-
Ahhh summer's the best :D
-
i cant wait for it haha
-
had nets yesterday have nets today have nets tomoro LOL
-
Couldn't net today, 10 stitches in my top lip :(
-
Had a good one today.
After 2 winter nets where somebody tried to teach me a 'classical' SLA action to allow me to really give the ball a tweak, this just confused me, and meant I was either bowling full bungers or long hops.
I stuck with it for the first 20 mins today, and it just wasn't working - so went back to my old run-up and actin, and it just started coming out right, including bowling the 1stXI opener!
This means I don't turn it much, but I get plenty of flight and dip - it also means I can bowl it where I want it, and hopefully get much more of a bowl this season.
Yay! I love a good net.
-
Just back from my nets, enjoyed my bat and produced a few decent balls. Wearing a nice ball mark on my thigh, maybe one day I'll wear a thigh pad. Pain is good tho!!

We have someone who doesn't bowl fast or move the ball. But just puts it were he wants, bowls the nagging length. Picked up 30 + wickets last season.
This year will be your year!
-
i was (No Swearing Please) today couldnt pull for (No Swearing Please)
-
Same here, confident with most shots except the pull - I'm better at it left-handed!
-
So far at nets it's been a mixed bag for me lol. Batting's been good 2/3 weeks and bowling has been abysmal when bowling leggies, not too bad seam up. Drives are definately my strongest shot lol
-
think i have been working hard on my leave so far in the nets spent about 30 overs today mastering it
getting there
-
Damn I missed my 1000th post lol, quickest yet? ;)
-
same here working hard on the laeve as an opener now just like the feel of bat on ball too much
-
I rarely leave it for an opener, it's 40 overs and I tend to play a shot a ball (that's my aim). Don't often get caught but I only really leave it if 1. they're too quick or 2. it calls for a test match situation
-
it been a weird pre season so far worked since October on every shot.
i like to practise the same shot for over 1200 delivery s to get my muscle memory just right .
-
I have had a pretty bad pre-season so far. Cant really have a convincing net session just yet, I seem to be picking up bad habbits, and today, the shoulder of the bat broke off, so not a brilliant pre-season as yet!
-
Yeah I find playing with a tennis ball in the back garden you can pick up some bad habit, but with the bounce I can play cut shots to perfection lol :P
-
i have beasted it big time maybe average around 40 overs a day as a non natural and trained player i have felt in very good touch ready to hit the season running.
i find it made it takes only a few deliverys to get in a bad habit but like i said 1200 deliverys to get it right
-
my nets have been cut down from 3 times a week. to twice one week and once the other week. That is on with club, just a general net. And the other is with the academy, doing 1:1 sessions.
Did my video analysis last weekend and will have that uploaded when I get it back.
12 front foot batting. 12 back foot batting and 9 bowling (3 from back, 3 from side, 3 from front)
-
Yeah same principle with takes ages to build something and seconds to shatter it. I try an practice as much as I can whenever it's dry during the winter, just always want to improve lol - unhealthy obsession
-
on my keeping i have made a few new drills up this season.
one called the coffin block put the coffin on leg stump stood upright then fire the ball down leg stump.
the other is to stand on the opposite of the batsman hand ie right hander stand leg side and move to the ball from there in delivery
-
the old classic it only useful no matter how you practise unless it good practice.
-
well I went from batting 9 for our 3's to batting 6 for our 1's in a season :)
I always set myself goals, last year it was to get 500 runs and 1 50. I got 897 runs and 6 50's :D
-
as a opener i would want to average around 40-45 in all forms of cricket i suspect i could topple 3000 runs for the season
-
For the amount of games I play (46 last season) 1000 would be the ultimate goal for me. Hoping to get a league hundred this yeah, I have bets with the 1st team captain as an incentive :)
-
league runs i got to be looking at around 900 in 18 innings is the target need to stop getting out when set around the 70-80 mark
the rest come from representative games an the occasional guest games in jazz hat cricket
the season can not come soon enough for me
-
looking around that myself got 692 in 21 games last season but aiming for 900-1000 this season
-
with them new pads you can not fail
-
true but has taken me 5yrs to get where i am now as was opening fast bolwer and no.11 bat for a div 4 2nd team but after serious knee injury had to learn to bat now open in a div 1/prem 1st x1
-
who do you play for roco
-
at the moment play for a team called montgomery as was playing for a different team in the prem but they were all about the click so moved to this team which is a family club
-
best way mate hate click and travailing around a lot bud as i do if i find a click i just walk
-
yeah it was if your the captains friend you got a bowl and bat where you want but family happy at this one son plays for u11's wife on youth commitee so happy all round
-
quality bud any club i turn up at i have a sure fire way of finding out what i want.
i go there and tell them i want to bat in top 3 and keep if there is nobody else good enough.
i then tell them that if they have a young keeper i will work on him to either keep or keep when i have left.
i o not mess around at club level it not my main cricket but hate the clicks
-
thats cool well club/minor county level is what i'm at wont go any higher as just a bat might have before the knee as was clocked at 84.7 during a warickshire session at 17 and was told had the potentional to get quicker but couple of months later the knee went so can only bowl medium now but hey we all have our purpose in life
-
yeah i do not piss around at club level it just a net for the real thing just wish i had that little bit extra at 16 at Lancashire centre of excerllance before the academys came in
-
so what level you play
-
me i play if selected against county 2nd elevens and minor counties sides.
i played against the Dutch side that beat England well they did contain 6 of that side.
-
should be averaging 50+ then at club level?
-
dan 'i'am not a county player at all it who i play for against mate i 31 far to old for that stuff and simply not good enough mate.
-
aha fair enough you old codger :P!
-
cool would of loved to have had a crack at that level as the one thing always buggs me as to how quick i could've got as decent speed at 17(would've loved to have passed 90 but big difference between 85 and 90) but family has arthritis in knees will need an op in 30's but our minor county had a friendly against hampshire other season so hope to get a shot at that in i can hit my targets
-
still hold my own though unless james vince is playing i was 12thers against Hampshire last season he swashed it to all parts.
top top player he will become
-
Couldn't net today, 10 stitches in my top lip :(
Treid convincing my mum to let me go, she said no.
Turns out 10 minutes into the session one of our bowlers had three teeth knocked out and his lip cut all the way to the base of his nose.
Freaky.
-
had the best net so far yesterday, everything seemed to come out of the middle. was pretty chuffed, first team skipper was also watching so all the better. hopefully i can start the season better than last season, shouldnt take too much, 1 run in the frst two games would do it!
-
Did my first net session!!! Bowling was terrible, as usual and batting was odd. I got a bit of stick with the cor3 and the ayrtec helmet. Sadly I didn't silence the critics, I was rusty and terrible. Still, the bat had a great feel to it, I had a few blocks which due to the angle of the bat made the ball travel back quite fast. Our 1st captain ("bishop" as ian know him) loved the middle on it
-
We have the best indoor facilities in Ireland at my club... only lords contends with it imo :L
No need for mats as the floor is all like a artificial surface, long runs ups, no one has had a problem since Paul Mooney left lol. Lighting is very good when all lights are on.....
BUT I despise nets... I just can't bowl when I don't have a field to bowl to. Batting isn't to bad but again I don't like batting when there isn't a field so you can nudge balls into gaps ect. But I train like 5 times a week so I try to get used to it :S
-
I'v been playing twice on sundays - indoor cricket during the day, then nets in the afternoon. The indoor cricket is played off 19 yards because the balls apparant lightness - it makes batting more instinctive and bowling a pleasure.
Nets in the evening are polar opposite - batting feels like you have an eternity and bowling seems impossibly slow.
I would say that i feel my batting has come on a lot because of the shortened pitches used in indoor cricket, my bowling is still fine and working on variations really for the season.
-

Is Lords even the best in England? Loughborough National Academy has to be up there

where are you playing dom? 19 yards?
-
Wesfield School at Yeovil - it's a small sports centre. It's called the Cougar League.
-
All county grounds have the same surface which is good so theyll all as good as each other really.
Loughborough is probably the best as it has hawk eye on every net linked to plasmas in an analysis room
-

Sorry, not been at many in England.
-
Just back from my nets, another poor turn out, bet the first team players that ain't turned up still get picked to play 1s. Makes you wonder why the 2s bother.
Anyone else have this problem with certain first team players being almost gaurenteed their place?
-

oh yes all the time!!!!
4 players at training last night so we did 2 hours fitness an hour after I did 2 hours at the gym!! :'(
-
I went to my first one today, I have the reactions of an elephant :) I am so out of season :L
-
Today was my best net, footwork, particularly against the spinners was good. The tweakers came out nicely as well, can't wait for the new season!
-
just come back from my first net with my new club and to be honest i batted beautifully all the hours i have put in have come to the forefront only had one problem one bat i split the toe and it is a new one bloody went like a train as well.
The standard in Northern Ireland is not to bad but i should be able to score a few runs here if it does not rain and if my bats last a little longer but hey ho
-
"one bat i split the toe and it is a new one bloody went like a train as well."
:0 what was it?
-
not revealing bud till it sorted
-
Tonight was BAD, I had done my hip in during my coaching course and shouldn't really have played tonight. Pull shots were not a good idea and I just collapsed! Going to have to stop netting and only do my 1-1 sessions up to the season. As this injury was bad for me thoughout last season.
-
Last few nets have been terrible for me lol, giving up my leggies and I think batting's going the same way, especially if you have grenades thrown down at you how can you get better?
-
my pull shots were poop :( last few net's ive been (No Swearing Please) but the latest net i merked ;)
