Well see the link below because a guy in NZ is trialling one... very interesting considering what happened to Luke Fletcher.

I’ve got a feeling it’ll be one of those that only catches on if something serious happens, similar to the neck protection.

I’m sure it’s very protective, but it’s not a strong look haha

Can't believe no one ever hit one straight back at Jimmy
His was the first action I've seen, to really almost look backwards on delivery
I see a lot copying it nowadays

Going several years back I had one smacked straight back at me head height.

I couldn't get my hands up in time and was hit on the temple. The ball went for 1 instead of 4 and I finished bowling my over.

I was told to go off as I was bleeding, which I did to apply ice. I went back on and took a 3 get to win the game! It later turned out I had been concussed and bruised my skull!

Even having experienced that I wouldn't wear one personally. I've just made an effort to either catch or evade anything dribbled back at me since...

It is not a bad idea. Batters are getting stronger and hitting the ball harder at all levels. I'd allow it and leave it up to the individuals to wear one if they like. I have seen people get hit in the indoor nets and it'd make sense to protect their heads.

This!

Once they become more readily available I'm wondering what the stance would be.
Even 15 years ago colts wearing a helmet to bat or stand up when keeping wasn't compulsory, but is now a requirement for anyone under 18.

The knock on effect of this is rather interesting, as there are people only a few years older than me who don't wear a lid ("never used one when I was younger, why start now?") while almost everyone age 18-25 choses to wear one as they always had to while growing up/learning the game.

Will these also become a requirement for under 18s in the future? If so they could become common at most levels in just a few years.

And I suppose umpires have to be considered candidates to wear them too

^ This hits close to home. One of our league's dear umpires, a senior member of the league and a wonderful fellow, got hit in the eye socket and lost his eye this season. Even with that injury, he was thought to be lucky!

Baseball have talked about padded caps or helmets for pitchers due to similar issues with a head down follow through. The sports tradition has stood in the way, similar to the way most still wear belts and long socks. Expect nothing but the same in cricket to be honest, again unless something serious happens which we all hope it doesn't.

Ok, I think this solution looks a tad over engineered but tbh the bowler feels vulnerable because of his specific follow through... if he is concerned about getting a ball coming at him that he can not see in time and getting a serious blow to the top of the head then he is hardly going to be fully committed in his action.. and hence not as good a bowler as he obviously could be.

If a helmet helps him over come those fears and bowl better then I don't see what the issue is personally.

Would I wear one... in his circumstance then yes I probably would.... bowling my pies?... no don't think so.
