Title: England's WORST Ever ONE DAY XI
Post by: Manormanic on January 30, 2018, 08:39:51 AM
Spurred on by Pete's topic on the true disasters of the test arena, I wondered what an equivalent One Day International side would look like.  For the purposes of this challenge, I decided to make up a side entirely of people who ONLY played one day internationals for England (ie no test caps) which ruled ou what would otherwise have been deserved inclusion for Zafar Ansari and Darren Maddy).  Wonder what you guys think:

Jim Troughton (Warwickshire)
Phil Mustard (Durham)
Malachy Loye (Northants/Lancs)
Monte Lynch (Surrey)
Vince Wells (Leicestershire)
Colin Wells (Sussex/Derbyshire)
Paul Grayson (Yorkshire/Essex)
Alex Loudon (Warwickshire)
Paul Franks (Nottingshamshire)
Alex Wharf (Yorkshire/Glamorgan)
Jade Dernbach (Surrey)

Luckiest men alive would be Jamie Dalrymple and Harry Gurney - poor, but not quite poor enough.

Harsh on Jade (yes Surrey bias) but he was being asked do the impossible...
Mal Loye should have done better.

A fine lineup but I think Geoff humpage (that's going back a few years) edges out colonel mustard as keeper?

I don't know if you could call it harsh - yes, his awful economy rate was in large part due to his being asked to perform a particular role and given little chance to bowl at the front of the innings to leaven it out, but he didn't have to try quite so many downright daft variations. Did he?

I used as far as possible the same 89/90 cut off in our other England threads...

...otherwise, yes, he probably did!

Jake Ball is doing his best to get on this list.

EDIT: And the test list for that matter.

Ball looked so promising.  It isn't working out for him as yet though.

I'd probably argue for Prior as one of the worst ODI keepers, given how good he was in tests, he sucked the big one in ODIs...

Falls foul of the played test matches rule...

Ahhh, I must have skipped that bit!

Danny Briggs anyone?

Bit harsh, one ODI with a bowling average of 19.5.....

Incidentally his sole ODI was also Jos Buttler's ODI debut.

Fair point that, didn't realise how well he'd done on his one appearance!  :o

Briggs should be in the "hat happened to them exactly?" thread (that noone has yet written).

He played a test or two, but Owais Shah?

Owais averaged 30 in 70 games I think that means he doesn't qualify for this team!
He was also messed about with due to the super sub rule. Argh.

Which prompts a different thread... worst ever cricket law changes.
Surely super sub and bat sizes have to be up there!

Super sub was a great idea if it did not rely entirely upon winning the toss. Squad of xii would have been better, working like the interchange in rugby league.
