Title: Anyone using the GM icon Geo or GN test opener?
Post by: ProWannabe88 on February 05, 2018, 07:59:02 PM
Evening all.

Been looking for a lid for the coming season and I cannot come to terms with the new Masuri helmets. I’m sure others have had this issue since the old style was discontinued.

I won’t wear my helmet very often, indoor nets mainly and On our Astro training.

Was looking at spending around £40-£60 and have seen both the GM icon geo and GN test opener online in that price bracket.

Just wanted to get peoples thoughts and opinions on both. Pros and cons etc and maybe any other alternates I’ve not discovered yet.

Cheers

Out of GM, GN and kookaburra I opted for the kook as an entry level helmet, and we stock the 600 model helmet in the shop, offers very good vision and great value in the £40 region. The neck guard is well priced as well at around £12

Yes, I liked the GM one, it is a good lid and the fit is good too. Looks a bit like a riding lid though!

However I now use a sports direct masuri...! Cheap and light.

The internal padding is ghastly and I replaced that, I also stuck a titanium grille on it, but that is a different ball game!

Sports direct masuri? What on earth?

Just come across this - Ton? Looks basically Masuri-esque and has supposedly passes the standard, decently priced: http://www.prodirectcricket.com/products/TON-Elite-Helmet-Helmets-Bottle-Green-150050.aspx (http://www.prodirectcricket.com/products/TON-Elite-Helmet-Helmets-Bottle-Green-150050.aspx)

More Shrey than Masuri isn't it? Surprised too that it passes the latest Standard as I thought they couldn't have removable grills... it does look like a decent option though
Shrey only copied the design off Masuri in the first place didn't they ;) No requirement for fixed grilles in the new standard afaik, there's loads out there with removable as well. I'm sure Tomtek could tell us more but from what's been made publicly available the only requirement is to pass the impact tests, and manufacturers have interpreted that by removing the ability to adjust the grille as the test would always be carried out with the grille in its' weakest position (ie widest gap), so there's no benefit to having adjustment.

Don't mistake this for a genuine Masuri...

I tried the GN helmet when I was at Morrant. It felt really comfortable. I might be wrong but it felt as if the shell was shaped more like a conventional human head rather than the generic roundish shape of other helmets. But looks wise, it somehow looks more like a riding helmet.

Anyone else have an opinion on the gn test opener lid? Does it weigh a ton?I tried the sports direct masuri but my chin felt a bit exposed- and I don't have a Jimmy Hill chin either, merely an ordinary,medium-sized chin....
Quite like the test opener lookswise and I fancy myself as a bit of a kane Williamson!

I think the GN test opener lid is pretty decent. The visibility is better than both the Shrey and Masuri OS2 in my opinion. Not light by any means but comfortable enough. A good choice at a reasonable price. The titanium GN one is better weight wise (of course) but also an extra £100.

The Gn definitely suits/fits the person with the longer face

Looking for a new lid.  Currently, using a GN junior but I am finding that the distance between the grill and peak is narrow making it difficult to follow the ball.  Going to move up to a senior helmet in small/medium size and looking at the GM Purist Geo or the Masuri mentioned.

Question on the new standard, which my quick Google search did not yield any answer.  What is the maximum distance between peak and the grill?

Sure Tom or DorsetDan will be able to tell you that - both well informed chaps.  Be careful however if you're a junior, as the senior helmets I believe (some in any case) are only tested using senior balls.

I think the max distance 55mm.
I have found that you have to pull the peak quite a way down compared to a older lid.

@stevat, @Buzz, @DorsetDan

Thanks for the information.  Need senior helmet but my head is peanut size and that was the reason that I ended up with junior helmet.  Local shops do not have that many options in sizes or brands.

Basic rule of thumb with new Masuri lids - have the swoppa band on your eyebrows!
It may seem a bit foreign at first if you're used to an old style lid, but you soon get used to it
