We have recently been given £2k from Tesco via their Bags for life blue token scheme/grants. We plan on re-furbishing our nets with some extra money we have in the club.
We currently have a concrete base with poles that were made by a club member who is a builder so they arent quite the normal dimensions! The nets have two batting lanes.
Whilst we'd love to start from scratch that isnt really viable. We plan on getting some new mats that can be rolled down and put away each winter. In order to protect the balls from the concrete we plan to cover this with the surround matting/carpet you see at alot of cricket nets. Here is my question..... The stuff that is sold by cricket companies is quite expensive, is using a decent quality (yet still cheaper) artificiial grass for these surround areas viable? Has anyone done it before? If so how did it work out?
They should be used fairly lightly as they are just on the edges of the net and we would have to enforce NO spike policy but they seem to have UV protection and latex backing. Could potentially save us £5-£10 a sq m which on our budget would be huge, it does however seem too good to be true and that i am missing something obvious?!?!

Hi Ian we used food quality artificial grass on the outside of the matting when we upgraded our old nets 2 seasons ago and it’s fine, as you say UV protection and strict no spikes rule and good winter maintenance and ours look as good as new each summer. We saved about £1200 I believe doing it this was across our two nets and now have proper width, good quality nets

Thanks @SOULMAN1012 it’s an idea I will certainly put forward. Did you get the more carpet type of artificial grass or one with a more realistic pile (that looked like blades of grass)?

We got the grass effect as were told it was was harder wearing espicalky with frost etc and we are a rural club even more so than Hartley Country club

@iand123 my brother in law works for a company that manufactures artificial grass, I’ll ask him if he can get any from the factory at a discount

So slowly getting some progress with this.
Quick question - how does your clubs nets stop balls from underneath the bottom of the net? I see some places offer a leadlined bottom of the net to add extra weight, some have wire which they fix it to, some use rope. Intrigued as to what setup you guys have?

Not sure if it will work in your situation but our fixed nets are fixed to a wooden border.

Ours are a bit crude in that at the bottom of the bet we have made some loop holes and threaded through scaffold poles that are then pined over with over sized tent pegs, works a treat

That's a neat solution; probably stop rabbits gnawing through as well.
