Hi guy just thought I would ask your opinions on the club I play for on a Sunday we are really struggling for players I have done a head count and we have 12/13 at the most to get us though the season including three players who are in there seventies and two who only played twice last season i surggested we withdraw from the league and try and get emergency fixtures when we have enough players but I been told I am being negative but think it’s only fair to the league we tell them the problems we have

Classic early season optimism/delusion about Sunday fixtures. I don’t think you’re being negative- perhaps you could offer something more of a solution- are there any local teams in a similar position you could play with combined XIs to stand more of a chance of not fulfilling fixtures?

Yes do you have a bigger club further up the pyramid which could loan young players out get them experienced in mens cricket.

We have a huge club that is literally half a mile away and they run three Sunday sides so no joy there we tried to get more players but unfortunately they all seem to pick the bigger clubs rather than a small club with a lot of older players

We only have 14 members at our club. Luckily the vast majority are available every week so we only struggle perhaps twice a year. I think for the average club you need 22 people for every team (a 2 team club needs 44 members).
I feel you will struggle to put out a side regularly, particularly with the age profile of the players.

That’s my worry we have players with family who always miss a few games unfortunately the league doesn’t allow transfers during the season which rules a lot of people out who play at other clubs so it’s very difficult for players to help us out as it means they would have to sign for the season

Did you not get promoted never having put out a full side all year in 2017?
You don't need 11 :)

I think there is some value in being cautious but at the same time if it dies it becomes even harder to resurrect ever again. We have just done the opposite and started up a third team... partly in response to getting more of our juniors into senior cricket but its also an indication of more club players being available and potentially not getting much cricket... which is a good sign for us really as it shows we have grown in ranks. The committee meeting to approve it was definitly not unanimous though.... those that have been through the pain of the declining years where we must have really struggled to put a 2 teams out on a sat.. let alone a Sunday were definitly not sir positive.

Pull out and play meaningful Sunday games when you know you can definitely raise 11 people

Yes we did but playing with 8 players each week is tough.

Winning with 8 is an achievement, you can't have had any ornaments in that side! :)
-
Getting promoted with 8 players most games is some achievement
Take my hat off to you sir, you must be a crack outfit
-
Must have a gun opening batsman or they are all playing in a league well below their standard but going out with 8 can’t be enjoyable especially in the field

Most of us are decent the club has three big players the leagues record run scorer one guy who scored over 150 twice last season and a bowler who made the worcester newspapers taking ten wickets for 23 runs.

The standard was at times reasonable last season and previous seasons were a mismatch as a one team club we won the div 3 times I think I the last 6 seasons but couldn't get promoted any of the top 3 clubs who were one team clubs who like ourselves had lost there second teams and demoted into the div could have won it the rest of the div was made up of third teams.
For season 2018 the league has been reorganised with the top 4 teams getting promoted.

Struggling to find a team in India!! :o :o :o
Where are you located mate? There are cricket teams all over the place in India..league cricket, private leagues, corporate leagues!
-
If a chap is struggling to find a game of cricket in India, the game's in worse shape than we thought!
-
There you go OP - you only need 8 players to win the league! ;)

The thing is, right, lets say you enter the league and are given 20 fixtures, but then you end up only being able to get a team out for half of them.
That's the 10 weekends where not only do your remaining players not get a game, but that's now a weekend where the opposition players don't get a game, either.
If there are a lot of teams like this in the league, you can have good clubs full of enthusiastic cricketers who hardly ever actually get a game of cricket. They have made the effort and kept all their weekends free, and now they're just left without a game. This has happened to our 2nd XI this year. One bloke I was talking to at the start of the season was super keen, available for every weekend, and he's now gone a month without playing a single game.
and guess what they do - they quit cricket, because what is the point of making the time and effort to dedicate yourself to a sport, only to never actually get to play it? You'd be better off taking up golf or something instead.
and so now another team folds. and so the cycle continues.
THIS is what is killing our game. If you can't commit to a league - and guarantee you will fulfil every fixture, come what may, then don't enter, because all you are doing is spreading the virus.
