Had my first indoor net of the new season and to be fair was totally brutal. Will not discuss my batting which was pretty embarrassing despite my blank bats t20 bat. Can’t review bat yet as I didn’t hit many! Bowling was even worse sure it wasn’t right length as kept bowling full tosses. At end of session I bowled a few seamers with a bit more success. I know lots of players move from seam to spin but has anyone moved from spin to seam? I’m in my late 30s and bowled spin for almost 20 years but bowled a seam as teenager. Like most clubs we have plenty of medium pacers hence sticking with spin makes sense just to give a bit of variety. Or I should give up bowling and focus on my batting which err could do with some work.

Do what you will enjoy. But do not give stuff up!!!

And I’m the reserve keeper!!!!!!

I took a year off from bowling to concentrate on my batting and now I am back at it again. I switched from right arm off spinner to left arm medium pace bowling. I thought my batting was suffering because of how much effort I was putting toward my bowling, therefore I decided to take a year off and acted as a sixth/seventh bowler and mostly focused on my batting.

If it was easy they'd be more spinners than seamers ;)
I bowl legspin and mix it up with seam in the nets just for a bit of variation. I rarely use seam in a game. Last time I used it was when they only needed a few runs to win with two wickets left and their batter would step in front of his stumps so I bowled seam around the wicket to cramp him up and maybe a lbw. It worked to a degree but the still won.
Anyway we all have bad days at the office. Just go with what feels best for you.

My problem has always been I’m a passable opening bat, spinner, keeper and seamer but not proficient in any discipline. A classic case of jack of all trades master of none! When I went to move clubs two years ago one club wanted to sign me as their keeper the other as their 1st choice spinner. Ironically in the two games against the club who wanted me to keep I got 8 wickets as a spinner!!
@Jaffa you are prob right just a bad day at office indoor nets not exactly off spin friendly but does help when you bounce it!
-
There's a guy at the club I play for who just does what he wants. Sometimes it's seam, sometimes he spins it off, sometimes he just drags it down doing bugger all.
Whatever you bowl you'll probably get somebody out!
-
I wouldn't give up 20 years of bowling spin just because you had one bad net.
Sounds like you're being a bit hard on yourself, just relax, if you've been good enough as a spinner for the last 20 years then that's not going to desert you overnight!
-
It all depends on how good a spinner you were in the first place. If you have never really enjoyed bowling spin, then a switch might not be a bad thing.

If I gave up everytime I had a bad net i'd be long retired!

Do what you enjoy the most.

There is precedent for this. Craig White started off as a spinner - not even a very good one - but became a seriously rapid pace bowler, possibly the fastest ever to play for England.
-
Maybe due to off season, without realising it, your grip has changed so the seam is coming out differently.
I had something similar happen to me so I bought some of the red/white balls so I could see what was happening a little better.
Could have also been a knackered ball. No seam, been knocked out of shape so it's out of balance. Sometimes you can blame the tools. I can't bowl offspin but I flip the ball up like a offspinner to see if the seam stays upright.

Thanks for the comments. Will it another twirl on Friday and see how I get on.

You mean another seam, rather than a twirl right? ;)

I switched from right arm off spinner to left arm medium pace bowling.
Wow!

Most club spinners bowl way too slow and don't turn it much.
Perhaps just adapt your bowling rather than see it as two distinct disciplines?

Was going to give the offies a go again tonight. Sadly the snow has scuppered me, indoor nets off venue shut.

Historically I did bowl my spin relatively quickly but the level I’m at now you do have to bowl slower. Perhaps I do need to return to my more natural pace from a few years ago.

Why do you?
-
My guess would be you just get hacked across the line if you bowl quicker.
A lot of spinners in lower leagues are more successful if they slow it up and get it above the eyeline, eyes light up, same big hack is either a miss or a skyer (which someone will inevitably shell...)

But you don't if you call yourself a medium pacer?

Exactly which means I’m in a catch 22. If I want to get wickets in 2s bowl it slow and toss it up but in 1s need to bowl quicker and flatter. My stock ball was quicker and flatter but got slogged in 2s or played as a medium pacer so they hit ball in unusual places to my field. Nets last week I just kept bowling full tosses and tbh i bowled a few last year too. This suggests I’m trying to throw up too much. Also the majority of my time as a spinner was bowling on harder batting tracks now I bowl on soft green bowler friendly decks. This has had an impact too I would imagine on my speed and lengths.

So if the tactic used by 2s batsmen against your quicker spin is such a winning one, why would 'better' 1s batsmen not adopt it? It's all about scoring runs, isn't it?
Personally, I can bowl seam-up as quickly as I can and still get called a spinner. :o

Better batsmen play more orthodox and treat spinners with more respect. They tend to play the ball on merit and play straighter. They will look to milk singles and take less risks especially if on first change.
The lesser batsman sees spinner and just thinks I’m slogging him out of park. They hit towards cow and will edge the ball/hit off centre so it goes between fielders. Toss it up above their eye line and they miss it more often. Do that to better batsman and you will need plenty of spares. Please some other forumites help me out here and agree!!
-
I can sort of see where you are coming from, and it reminds me of why I hate playing at the level I do.
-
I know what you mean about the lesser batsmen slogging it in strange areas on the field - incredibly hard to set an effective field when even they don't know where it's going to go! I always seemed to find success having a backward/silly point and gully as I found batsmen would always try and drive me through the covers.
Of course sometimes they'd crack one and not even they knew where they'd hit it which resulted in a couple of entertaining run outs.

Exactly mate I experimented with a fly slip as ball seemed to fly in that direction from booming drives! You are totally right they don’t know where it is going how do you!
-
Fly slip is a good run saving position in lower level club cricket I think
-
Fly slip is a great option in the later overs of club cricket. Can always guarantee a floaty catch off a hoick at some point there. Save a load of runs too!

Bowled a very few offies tonight at nets then bowled seam rest of night. 1s opening bat thought I was bowling slower balls then began lining me up huge hits! Against 2/3/4s had a bit of joy. Cleaned up the 1s skipper too but he was running down the wicket at me! But the main thing is I enjoyed it and got a good workout. I imagine I wil be very sore tomorrow and Sunday.
-
Yeah that sore arm you get the first few nets of the year sucks.
