Title: Any suggestions to fix this?
Post by: moggy on March 04, 2018, 06:28:12 PM
Being an Atherton and Smith (R.A.) fan I quite fancied owning a classic Gray Nicolls.  I duly scoured eBay before finding a nicely grainy Millenium Limited Edition that looked fine apart from some tape near the bottom.  I hoped for the best and got it for about 20-30 quid.  Its a nice bat, looks good but could look better and for a while thats how it stayed.  Anyway I recently decided to sand it back and tidy it up a bit.  First things first says I and get the white spirit out for a go at the tape...Turns out this is one of those times when the tape is hiding something, its missing a chunk about 2cm long by 1.5cm wide.  Its probably at most a couple of mm deep but quite disappointing and isn't going to sand out too easily.

Realistically the only thing I can think to do is graft in a new bit of willow, does anyone else have any suggestions?

TIA

Mix some sawdust with PVA, perhaps

I think it's a bit big for PVA and dust, it won't last.. I think you have 2 options
1 try an epoxy filler and cover with a single wrap of fibre tape.
2. Make a rectangular stencil and use a craft knife and chisel to remove the offending area. Use the same stencil to create the correct sized patch. Glue and clamp it in, sand it back then cover with a wrap of fibre tape.
If you love it choose option 2. It you're not bothered choose option 1.

Thanks chaps for the suggestions.  In an ideal world I'd go option 2 but as I've no experience I'd hate to botch my first attempt on what is otherwise a nice bat.  I'll have a look at filling it, thanks again  :)

Don't think I would use a filler as it will probably come out think the best option is to sand  and blend then tape.
