I bought this bat from Ebay - £25 +postage. Badged as a Newbery, but apparently a County (possibly a Mettle, which I can't recall, but is not a particularly top end model). The grains looked straight, nice decals, so I thought it would make an interesting little project.

Very pleased with it when it arrived, so quickly started getting rid of the tape.

A couple of tiny surface cracks. 20-30 minutes of sanding later, 8 straight (if not evenly spaced) grains appeared, a bit of wax and a new white grip - very happy.

The best bit was the handle - lovely extra thick oval handle - this is going to be a pretty stiff bat.

I expected it would take longer, but I'm very pleased with it - just planning to keep it a s a 'knock about' bat, perhaps keeping it in the car over the summer to ensure always have a bat for coaching (or playing with between meetings).
