Title: Replacements for Smith and Warner in IPL
Post by: jdownesbcfc on March 28, 2018, 02:24:49 PM
Hi Guys

Who do you think will replace Smith and Warner in IPL at their respective franchises?

For me, I would say Ronchi will be a direct replacement for Warner (baffling that he wasn't picked up in the first place and he was scintillating in PSL)

And Root for Smith.

Although Amla would be an equally good shout

Any other thoughts?

The replacements that I would look at would be Root, Ronchi, Guptill and Amla.

Still bemused how Amla missed out in the first place, he scored 500+ runs in IPL and got two hundreds

Hales will get a go.

I don't think they will go for Root - he has to be back in time to play 2 red ball games before the tests so would miss almost half the tournament.  I'd say Hales is a more likely bet amongst the English contingent.

Would love to see Luke Wright get an opportunity

Would love to see Luke Wright get an opportunity

why? he's hardly in the same calibre as the players mentioned above

And Wright was absolutely stinking in the Big Bash. Afraid his time has gone now. I'd love to see someone take a punt on a few of the successful English bats like Denly or even a really raw talent like Pollock

Making out like Wright is some sort of bunny, he's got 6500 T20 runs. He would be a bargain buy. Also factor in Smith and Warner are banned for IPL 11 but they still hold contracts for IPL 12. So unless they agree to pay cuts, Royals and Sunrisers would be out of pocket blowing big money replacements

How many t20 runs has he got in the last 12 months? Not saying he’s a bunny but think his best days are long behind him. As for the big spending factor, wouldn’t be surprised if a concession is made equating to their wages/cost compared to the cap. Or an alternative workaround so the figures aren’t reflected

Warner's replacement at SRH i think is fairly straight forward too be honest - they need an opening batsman as a replacement so that means quite a few options Guptill/Hales/Ronchi - i think the new captain will be squeeky clean Kane Williamson.

Smith's replacement however i think is more tricky as there are less middle order bats for RR to choose from and i think like Manor says they will be reluctant (or may still do so) go for Root because of his availability (and don't forget they lose Stokes as well at the end and maybe before that!).

Also consider who RR have already got as overseas - Stokes, Archer, Butler, Short and Laughlin - Smith was guaranteed to play as captain but now Rahane is captain they may go for an overseas that is 1. available the whole tournament and 2. that is a back up eg. Lendl Simmons

People saying Amla for a replacement - he has committed to being Hampshire's overseas for the 1st 3 months of the season so i think that probably runs him out.

Williamson confirmed as Sunrisers captain. And they have approached Sri Lankan slugger Kusal Perrera as replacement for Warner

Rajasthan closing in on South Africa reserve keeper Heinrich Klassen. I guess pounding the India spinners senseless has got him a deal of a lifetime

Kusal Perera not a bad left field option I guess. Imagine both of those came very cheaply hence the deals getting done

Looks as though both sides really have decided to save there cash considering both Smith and Warner will be back next year.

RR going after Klassen is interesting as that would mean they have 3 keepers in their squad - Butler, Samson and him.

Pretty sure he’d signed for a club over here as the overseas for the season as well, sure I read it online somewhere

Although starc isn’t in the title....... as he’s “injured”

Tom Curran has been called up as his replacement in the ipl. Another gig for an Englishman!

Yorkshire are trying to stop Willie going to, I think, CSK...

Yorkshire are trying to stop Willie going to, I think, CSK...

I read it that they are holding a meeting amongst the counties so that this situation - two players being taken once it is too late to secure replacements - cannot happen in future.  The ECB are very keen for Willey to go as they don't see him as a red ball player at international level, so its a fair accomplit.  Rather sad when three weeks ago Yorkshire backed out of chasing Morne Morkel, who has previous with us, because Moxon wanted to back his English bowlers.

I'd have a rant but its not worth it.
