Title: Talking between overs
Post by: richthekeeper on May 10, 2018, 10:56:29 AM
What do you talk about between overs when you're batting? I got massively mocked in this week's match report for my habit of talking through what I'm trying to do, both to the previous bowler and the upcoming one. It's not every ball, but just things like "he's moving it away but the line is 5th stump so I'm quite happy leaving them alone" or "I'm trying to find the gap between cover and point".

Later in the innings it's more about score targets but surely this is what everyone talks about in the middle?!

Talk about anything you like. Or don't talk at all...!
I quite like the occasional ignore your partner over, freaks people out these days 😂😂

I pass on info like the examples youve given if my batting partner may not be aware of it/faced it yet. If a bowler looks like they are getting tired or has particular tells for
variations ill pass on what ive noticed . Otherwise I just encourage my partner to keep going or compliment them on a good shot from the previous over . With guys that struggle to focus for long periods i set them small goals to count in our pertnership.  Beyond that i sometimes just talk rubbish , crack a joke or talk about what to do that night etc. You learn peoples likes and dislikes and adjust where possible too. I have one mate who needs to click our bats together after every over and guys who wont ever bump gloves , or guys who have to bump gloves every over , yada yada yada.

Sometimes I talk about cricket, sometimes I talk about women or sometimes I talk about the nights plans. Obviously this all depends on the match situation

Wish I'd a pound for every time I've said to my batting partner "plenty of overs left, bowling crap,it's doing nowt, etc etc) , for me to then slog across the line and be clean bowled

I never stop talking when I’m out in the middle, anything to keep my mind occupied. Umpires hate me because I ask how many balls are left just about every ball, always chat with the keeper/slips, walk almost all the way back to the hutch to walk back with a new batsman. Very rare anything important is said.

There is one guy in my team who is a complete helmet and only talks complete and utter tripe (not just in between overs, all the time!!!) so if i have to bat with him i refuse to talk to him in between overs. Other than that usually just what has happened in the last over and if its a new batsman what either bowler has been doing etc

When a new partner arrives just say  give yourself a chance have a look or if the ball has nearly bowled him tell him to watch it take a new guard get to the pitch etc
If he starts to panic and stars slogging tell him to calm down or he will be back in the pavillion otherwise nothing
Just stay focused on my own innings.

I normally say yeah you play the sensible bit, and I’ll start the hitting. Give me the strike please

When I used to play preferred talking random nonsense rather than about what's happening in the match. I was a fairly laid back guy so the odd joke here and there kept me going

Talk about how good tea was or wasn't or what I'm hoping for tea if batting 1st. Apart from that not a huge amount really, I will tell the next bat in swings in or away but no more than that as I think you can make them overthink it and should let them make there own minds up. One thing I do look for and share is who is good or poor in the field to take one on the arm from or a quick single as well as who to avoid and fielding is sharp

Agree on the over thinking which is why I say what I’m trying to do rather than telling my mate what to do.

Always talking about fielders - if it’s hot straight at fielder x we can still run etc.

Usally my chat is limited to "take your time and nice loud call if you're going to run" unless a fielders being over the top chirpy and then I'll wait till he's walking past and say to my partner "he's got a sh*t haircut hasn't he" or "that lads mams a beaut" etc etc cant stand overly chirpy slips :)
