Title: 10,000 knocks
Post by: Sitonit on August 09, 2018, 09:09:43 PM

so yeah, that's about the minimum number of knocks one is supposed to bang on the timber to complete the "knocking-in" process - and that's with a wooden mallet.
The first question, is there a mallet out there that exists which will not fall apart before 10,000 knocks? Almost every wooden mallet I have used, breaks before the knocking in process is completed.

But a more important question is,
If the goal is to press and compress the surface of the bat, why not gently used a carpenter's hammer?

I tried this with an al-cheapo grade 5 or something Kashmir willow bat, and it did not split but the question is, what are pros and cons (besides the risk of splitting the blade) if one gently uses a metal hammer and get the job done quickly?

THIS is what I am talking about lads,

Who said 10’000?

Many people will do well to hit 10’000 balls in their lifetime, 10’000 mallet strikes is overkill by a massive stretch

If you’re determined to use a mallet that much then get a lignum vitae mallet. I’ve knocked in hundreds of bats using mine and it looks exactly the same as the day I got it, virtually indestructable

I suspect the number was thrown around by bat knockers who use the knocking machine to market superiority of their service. Perhaps?

Regardless, I had one bat knocked by knocking machine and the bat opened up beautifully.

Lignum Vitae mallet fro Elviars Shed, the best of the best.

loving mine, makes it so easy to knock, less effort required and better results,
can honestly completely knock a bat in 2-3 hours with this thing. The hardness of the timber is perfect

can do damage though if not used correctly

I want to know what you are doing to break mallets, never done that in my life with any mallet, how are you breaking them? Splitting? head falling off?

Slightly concerning if you are breaking mallets...the GN one i have is solid as is the cheap light generic one I have (albeit too light)... elviars is a definite for me in coming months

100% piss take.

I knock my bats in for about half an hour at most, and then just use them very gently in the nets (let Yorkers hit the stumps, just push through everything else trying to avoid the toe or the splice). I actually find that this is quite a good way to start nets anyway - it makes you focus very carefully on finding the middle of the bat.

Like @SLA says you don't need to spend all that long doing it.

Apply a coat of oil, round the edges so they aren't sharp enough you could cut yourself on them, wack the toe with the mallet a few times, apply a scuff sheet and use it! If you're a bit precious about it you could wack the face all over after you've applied the scuff sheet.

When I saw '10,000 knocks' I wondered where the figure came from (drawn from the 10,000 hours to become an expert at one skill, perhaps?). But, broken down, it does not seem quite so exaggerated - if you say 1 mallet strike per second, this gives 60 per minute; 3,600 per hour.
So 10,000 knocks, which sound s a lot, is only around three hours work.
Admittedly, if this was done in one session your arm may be a tittle jaded.
I agree with others - my mallet still looks close to new, despite knocking in several bats (not for three hours per bat, though - several ten minute sessions, focussing on the edge and toe, followed by nets etc, for me).

yeah, because I'm a lazy (No Swearing Please) I pay to have mine pre-knocked in and a toe guard and scuff sheet fitted anyway.

Yes, that's an image that does the rounds on here every so often, but you must remember:

Sehwag was an international player and would have had access to however many bats he wanted. If he ruined it doing that he's just get another one out of his bag!

Those of us who pay with our hard earned would probably be well advised not to do it, as it would be an incredibly expensive cock up if/when it went wrong!

Looks like 10,000 was a reserved guess.
