Evening all
Following on from this discussion with a teammate earlier today I'd be curious to see what others come up with.
If you could pick an England test side of players (in their prime) who have played in the same side as Alastair Cook who would you go for?
Mine would be:
Strauss*
Trescothick
Cook
Root
KP
Stokes
Prior+
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Anderson
-
My teammates side was:
Trescothick
Cook
Vaughan*
Pietersen
Root
Prior+
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Harmison
Anderson
-
Cook would have KP kicked out of the side so he can break all the records :D
-
Trescothick
Cook
Vaughan
Root
Pieterson
Bell
Bairstow
Stokes
Flintoff
Swann
Anderson
If all had been fit and playing 3 seamers, Swann as specialist spinner with root, pieterson to fill in overs
-
Controversial, but do I have to select Cook?
Trescothick
Vaughan*
Pietersen
Root
Collingwood
Bairstow+
Flintoff
Stokes
Swann
Sidebottom
Anderson
If we are talking about absolute peaks, Harmison for Stokes.

Blimey there's supporting your County and then there's just stuff no on else will fathom at all.

Left arm a bit of variation and his record was decent

Really?
Vaughan is the best skipper England have had and at his peak was an incredible bat. Root averages 50 in tests and I cannot see a credible argument against YJB.
That leaves Sidebottom. So, my thinking was that I definitely wanted Anderson with the new ball and Freddie as my enforcer. Stokes was the reverse swinger, unless Harmy 2002 was available.
So, I needed someone to share the new cherry. Left me three options - I discarded Broad because he is a streak bowler, and Hoggard because he was too similar to Jimmy. So, Ryan. Yes, he had a shortened international career, but it was incredible whilst it lasted, and he would be the perfect foil for a peak Anderson.
So, what's the counter argument?

So you could have actually picked 5 yorkies #strongyorkshirestrongengland
-
Cook
Strauss
Trott
KP
Root
Bell
Prior
Swann
Harmison
Broad
Anderson
-
Strauss
Cook (or Trescothick if Cook is coach)
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Stokes
Bairstow +
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Anderson
I don't think Root has reached a peak and his conversion rate ain't great. I cant see past 1-5 that helped give us the best England side for decades.
6-8 are three quality all rounders, Swann world class and Broad and Anderson have almoat 1000 test wickets.
I did love Sidebottom though...!

Amusingly I am not sure I would Pick Cook in this team!
It really depends where the game was being played.
If it is in Asia he is the first pick. In England he doesn't make it.
In Aus he would just scrape in...!
Trescothick
Vaughan
Trott
Root
KP
Stokes
Buttler
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Anderson

Wouldn't have Buttler anywhere near a team with a proper spinner in it. Prior is surely the logical choice as he could actually keep stood up to the wicket.

You aren't wrong, but I don't like Prior...
😂😂

Blimey there's supporting your County and then there's just stuff no on else will fathom at all.
Challenge excepted
Lyth
Cook(because it’s his team)
Vaughan
Root
Bairstow
ballance
Bresnan
Rashid
Plunkett
Sidebottom
Hoggard
-
Strauss
Cook
Vaughan/Bell (prefer Bell but would have both in squad)
Roooot
KP
Stokes
Prior
Flintoff
Swann
Broad/Jones (If Jones could stay fit!!)
Anderson

Yes Pete really like this side...... only thing i might change is YJB in for Prior because Prior is a knob.
-
Did Jones and Cook ever play together?

No, Jones played his last Test in 2005.
He'd have been in my side had they ever played together

I know but he has a very decent average and is a better keeper. That's the only reason!

Will just have to stick with Broad then. Shame really as I rated Jones very highly!!

I can't believe Moeen Ali hasn't been mentioned yet.
-
I think Strauss was a jolly good player, and a tough nut to boot.
I would’ve liked Strauss, Trescothick, Cook, Vaughan, KP to start me off.
-

I don't think he was a better keeper than Jonny is now, and Jonny's average with the bat whilst keeping is much higher (and in more challenging circumstances, given Prior often came in at 300-5)
-

Where would you fit him in? Not knocking the bloke, but I'm struggling to see a role he could fill in a side of that strength.

Cook
Trescothick
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Moeen
Woakes
Ambrose
Giles
Rankin
Anderson
Got swing and bounce covered, has two spinners so the team can play in England or in Asia. Giles can keep it tight, Moeen can attack with the ball turning either way so doesn't matter if the opposition is full of right or left handers. Everyone all the way down to 9 can hold a bat and there is a perfect blend of style, aggression and solidity in that batting lineup.
As the final added bonus, which makes this England XI the bestest out of every team mentioned so far, Anderson has been separated from his clique of Broad, Swann and Prior. Without the spectre of juvenile and disgraceful dressing room bullying hanging over him, Pietersen will use that freedom to score eleventy gazillion runs as he fulfils his potential as the second coming of Viv Richards.
There you go, scientific proof that England should have more Warwickshire players.

Cook
Trescothick
Trott (can't believe he's been left out of a lot of teams)
KP
Bell
Stokes
Buttler
Flintoff
Swann
Sidebottom
Anderson
