Got a cheap cleft from John at Red Ink. It’s no looker but I’m beyond caring obout that. It can handle and pressed and it was well pressed as I have come to expect from Red Ink.
It ins original form (essentially a brick on a stick) it weighed the best part of 4lbs and I aimed to get it to around 2.12 and in the shape of my Salix Raw.
I tried to keep it as big as possible but within a reasonable weight. Edges are 35mm spine 65mm.
I made the travisher from a kit supplied by ‘the Windsor workshop’ and used only a drawknife and travisher to complete it.
Here you are, it has a face only it’s mother (and other butterfly appreciators) could love but it goes really well. The last photos show to weight comparisons with the Salix.
The whole process has taught me to appreciate the craft of the professional podshaver, as although I didn’t encounter any problems (I’m a joiner by trade) there is a definite skill which needs to be supported.

Nice!
You got your own stickers as well?
-
Got the stickers from XX cricket.
I did think about making some of my own but to be honest I couldn’t be bothered.
-
Nice work! I’m waiting on a delivery from red ink so I can give it a go. How long did it take you?
-
Shaping and binding about 3 hours. I hand sanded it for about an hour.
-
I’m expecting it to take me a lot longer than that. Hopefully before winter nets start though!
-
I think I want to have a go at doing some refurbs of eBay bats first... but that's fantastic, and it's on my cricket bucket list.
-
Fabulous effort. Well done.

Top work James mate, planning to make more or just see how that one goes?
@No.4 @Yorkershire I'd strongly recommend giving it a go, you can knock a bat out from a part made with really limited tools and still get great results. Feels great walking out with a stick you've shaped yourself too!

Great work - I’ve got a draw knife on the way from John, and I just got the part-made from eBay so I’m looking forward to giving things a go myself!

Not anytime soon. I have 12 bats now and I love them all. My self imposed rule is that I must use every bat in at least one game each season or otherwise it must be moved on.

Fantastic job mate well done! Love character willow, and it'll go like a rocket off that bar.
-
Cheers. Still got loads to learn.
It really does go off of the bar and makes a different sound too. I was really pleased when I saw the bar location on The cleft. My Affinity has a hard bar smack in the middle and I’m certain it helps to improve performance.

Great stuff James that's a fantastic effort mate well done.
Looks a really nice shape, and that's some proper butterfly marking going on :)
-
Great job mate! Looking good!
-
Lovely shape, do you think you'll make more for team mates given your own selection rule?
-
If a teammate wanted a bat I would happily make them one. I usually lend out a few bats for the season anyway. This helps me to get them nicely played in.

Great effort!
