Title: Powerspot Refurb
Post by: Grubby on March 09, 2019, 09:05:44 AM
I picked up an old GN Powerspot and decided to go full refurb and not keep original labels. Wasn’t in too bad condition and has finished up pretty good.

Remarkable 😀😀
No one would have guessed if you hadn't told, how long did it take for refurbish? Are you going to use it? 🙂

Thanks. Only a couple of hours once I decided to get the old labels off. And a couple of weeks sending to GN to relabel. Not sure what to do with it yet but won’t personally be using it.

Just keep it, 😀
Previously I was thinking of buying new powerspot, when I read it's is powerful and concentrated on small area, then I thought it will be more suitable for proper batsmen who most of the times hit the middle 🙂
Is this true for this bat or is it my imagination?

a great refurb well done - the bat's come up lovely and just goes to show how the oil really does just sit on the surface of the wood.

Also great to see how different the shapes are and how modern bats seem so much bigger with their thick edges

Yes, it really was just sitting on the surface and didn’t take much at all

I actually raised my eyebrows and said 'blimey' out loud when I saw the results. Top job!
Love a restoration job that brings an oldie back to fight again.

Thanks. It’s always good getting the older bats looking like new. A bargain for £10

Yes, great bargain, it looks really good. You have the same problem I have with gluing the cracks on the toe. The repair looks great, but it's very hard to hide it so you don't get dark lines at the crack. I've tried filling with sawdust/ glue mix and just glue, but it still highlights the line of the crack, especially once it's oiled. Of course, if we are then selling them on it's probably more honest to see where the cracks are, but it wouid be nice to get them to blend in with the natural wood colour. Any suggestions? Someone said to use clear adhesive, which I'll try on the next refurb

I'm not sure there is a way to hide these cracks unless someone else can shed some light on this. The only sure fire way is to make the bat an inch shorter ;-)

I picked up another Powerspot today so will give before and after pictures before, during and after the refurb.

The cracks are old battle scars. They're characterful. No point in hiding them on an old bat. Even a well-refurbed one like this.

Looks a challenge. How are you going to deal with the fabric facing? Can it be peeled off and re-sanded? Will be interesting to see whether the grains underneath are same quality as your previous Powerspot without the facing...

I have finally got this back. Fully refurbished and re-labelled. It wasn't bad under the facing sheet. A couple of cracks that were easily sealed.

Do you know how they got the fabric cover off? Sanding or peeling? I've been wanting to refurb some polyarmoured bats but haven't tried getting the facing off yet...

I did it myself. Just peeled it off. GN only applied the labels for me after I did the refurb.

Thought I'd have a go myself so I bought this ancient GN Runmaker from Ebay today for £5. Looked in poor condition, see pics:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/VF1k4SvkHuFBZo1A6

Decided I would only strip the cloth from the playing surface and clean up the rest, keeping original stickers. The cloth cover cleaned really well by gently scraping with a Stanley knife

The bat is in great condition underneath :perfect face, no cracks, perfect toe. There are 8-10 well defined grains. Only issue is that the grains are curvy towards the toe, plus a couple of knots. It's cleaned up really well. I might try it at the nets this week. It seems to ping well. See pics below of during and after restoration:

Nice Easter holiday project while looking after the kids...

Looks good. Never thought about just taking the facing off the playing area. But good work.
I did a Scoop yesterday that can up well.

Thanks. I just thought the protective sheet has done a great job over the years keeping this bat in good shape so why remove it from the bits where we don't need to see the grains? Also I was really surprised how well it can clean up. I've now added a modern scuff sheet, see https://photos.app.goo.gl/pdtjKTbsEXhRkVXVA but I bet it won't protect as well as the original cloth..

Nice work on the scoop as well. I would have bought that or the Jumbo but couldn't get the link to work. Maybe it was already expired...

Some of these old bats come up beautifully when they are first sanded. But then they don't look quite so good once they are oiled.
