The shaping of my first bat is complete...
Size: SH
Weight: 2lb 11
Tools Used: Drawknife,Flat Spokeshave, Block Plane, Sandpaper
Still need to do a lot of sanding to get a decent finish and then finsh off binding and add grip - possibly going to have some stickers made.

I used this shape as a guideline for what I was aiming for:

Might yet add some concave to it when I get the right tool...
Really want some feedback...

i love that shape tbh m8
-
thats awesome !
i realy like it, possibly a little less edge ?
-
That looks a brilliant bat! Bet it plays awesome, have you tested the ping with a mallet?
-
Big harsh testing the pig with a mallet dont you think ;)
-
Haha yeah I tested the ping and it really does go, especially off the butterfly stain. I was praying I didn't mess this bat up - really does go.
-
Looks like a fantastic first effort, I hope my first effort will be as good. Be great to see it fully finished
-
For a First Bat that looks amazing. Are you going to take batmaking seriously?
-
Looks good, do a bit of concaving to bring the weight down and it will be perfect! Instinct stickers going on it?
-
Yeah might aswell have some made up I guess
-
realy nice bat leo
-
Thanks have completed a three stage sanding process, and binding is now done - am now oiling.
-
what type of sander did you use leo
-
I just used three grades of sandpaper wrapped round a sanding block... and a lot of elbow grease.
Please keep the feedback coming guys :)

That was the bat i had my eye on if i was still able to play cricket and had the space to continue making.
Good effort mate, how even are the edges? Handle feel good in the hands?
-
to me it seems the spine, towards the toe, slopes away in a concave fashion. hope you know what im on about, anyway was this deliberate? or a mistake you have covered up very well?
great first attempt, very nice profile.

Edges are pretty even, not perfect though. Handle is not too bad, was too thick first of all so took some off!
The bat really goes doesn't it, I was surprised how much the butterfly stain pings
Slogger - yeah I didnt get the perfect curve I wanted like on Norbs bat I was copying, seems to dip a bit. Still didn't turn out too bad. :D
-
Looks very nice indeed for a first attempt. Love the shape. Interesting to hear your using wire-wool as a means of finishing the bat!
Would like to see the shape of the spine/back if you get time :D
-
Wire wool gives a very fine finish is you havent got the ability to buff the bat i suppose.....any one fancy loaning me some tools they arent using so i can have a crack at one :) oh and a cleft ;)
-
I got a couple of drawknifes if your interested.
-
I prefer mine :D
Good work Leo
-
Hit4six drop me a line/PM mate.....could do with a few pointers on whats required I know there are a few topics etc so will get my reading glasses out!
-
Hows instinct bats coming along - any more updates Leo??
Got to grips with all the tools yet? I had a nasty cleft the other day, kept on tearing on the face......but all was well in the end as one of Englands best batmakers gave me a few hints and tips!
-
have you got a pic from the toe, i.e. showing the spine profile.
