Hello all,
I'm kind of a noob here, but I have taken a large interest in cricket and am considering to play it in college while I am in Boston. One of my biggest questions is about bats. Why do they all seem so EXPENSIVE?!? It looks like a decent english willow bat starts at about 300 dollars. As a previous baseball player, I have a hard time accepting that a bat could cost this much. Therefore, I'm trying to find the best bang for my buck.

I bought a good grade 2 English willow Adidas for $230NZD in NZ, but I'd recommend any English Willow bat from grade 3+. Yes, quality bats can be bought in the US and I'd go with a retailer like GM, Adidas, and SG. Good luck.

Cricket bats are "EXPENSIVE" because of limited to no standardization. As you delve in the world of custom bats, you will know what I am talking about. Answers to your questions interspersed below. You can get excellent used/new (for sale) bats for very low prices on ebay and on the forum. Before plunking down your money, do your due diligence.
What is a good bat for a beginner/intermediate cricketer?
A good bat for begin/intermediate cricketer is one that will get the batter good value for their shots without exerting too much power (which often results in changing the shape of the shot/stroke). Simply put, a bat that you can swing easily and see the ball go a decent distance.
Some factors to consider: weight of the bat which can vary from 2 lb 5 oz to 3 lb 3 oz monsters; shape of the bat and location of sweet spot (do you hit the ball high on the bat, low, mid-low?); handle size; blade length; etc. Swinging different bats and hitting balls will give you some idea of what feels good to you.
Can I get quality bats here in the US?
Of course! You can order them online. You can have them custom made (abroad) and shipped to your address. You can visit a cricket shop should you travel to the Tri-state area, CA, or TX. You can also buy from forumites here. You are not the only one in the US who hunts for quality bats. ;)
How long should a bat last?
That depends on several factors: - weight of the bat (lighter ones tend to break sooner than heavier ones but that doesn't mean that you'll get value from a heavier bat); bat care and maintenance; conditions and style of play; or, just plain luck. :D My favorite match bat lasted over 5 seasons and is still intact, it just doesn't ping like it used.
Do I need multiple bats (for practice and games)?
Not necessarily. Yes, that's a heretical statement considering the forum... :D
Should I consider just getting some good grade kashmir willow bats for cheaper?
No. You can get a very decent bat for less. Start with a used bat that feels good to you when you swing it. Try out bats of other people in your team. Get a general sense of the weight, shape, and size that works for you; and then, search for a bat meeting those specs online/here/else where. Because the USD is strong these days, you can get some high quality bats for around USD200.

Welcome to the forum. Great set of questions.
You should be able to get yourself a decent enough bat for about $150-200. If you look on UK websites you should be able to take about 20% off the price as you wont have to pay UK sales tax (vat). That will help cover postage...
Other than that @InternalTraining has answered your question thoroughly.
As I say to my son all the time. Look after your kit and it will look after you.
One further thing, you are in Boston where the weather gets pretty cold. Make sure you keep your willow somewhere with a constant temperature during the off season.

I would recommend hand pick your bat before buying, for it's feel and the right weight suitable to you, the one you really like and feels good, it's likely to be grade 2 or 3, should be a reasonable good looking willow, take good care of it and enjoy it for coming years, by them you'll know more about your game and bats 🙂

As you have played baseball thinking bat speed a lightweight bat could be a good bat to start with.

Like mentioned above I think you should buy used one off ebay or forum. See if you still like cricket after long day out on field and all other things involved.
once you develop more interest and skills thats the time to invest in good kit. Good kit not expensive kit.

Welcome aboard, hope you have a forgiving significant other.
I would advise someone starting to out to consider a couple of things - as someone else has said weight and feel are vitally important, appreciate that can be problematic given the sparsity of cricketing retailers in your locale. May be worth getting a second hand bat from someone on the forum, or one recommended in the eBay listings bit, sure people on here would send you some messages to point you in the right direction, going second hand means you won't have to worry about knocking the bat in, and if you get one from someone on here you can probably trust it's provenance and their descriptions.
If you want to go new, have a look for online deals on Gunn and Moore bats, 606 grade or Signature grade probably. For me they represent the best value for money on the market currently unless you get a cracking deal elsewhere.
There's been some issues ordering from ActivInstinct but they've some good deals in their sale at the moment. Online stockist from India as well often offer great deals and ship globally, but you'll have to wait and some people have misgivings about the quality they get - I've never had a problem.

I ordered 2.7-2.8 bat and he sent me 2.11 bat which is still sitting around.
Avoid online purchasing. Try to grab something locally that you can pick and feel.

Best bat for beginners? Two trains of thought...
Borrow teammates bats until you've broken so many of them you have to buy your own but at least you know what you like in a bat or...
Buy the most expensive bat you can afford, spend a season finding out your weaknesses and then in the winter spend your next budget on one to one training because you can't blame the bat for not middling everything.
