Hi guys,
Just thought I would share with you a bat I made up yesterday. Recently I have been lucky to have been asked to make some bat's for some pros for a particular brand.
Attached are some images of the bat I made and the specs the sent me.
15mm at the shoulder
35mm edges
20mm toe
Two tone
Full profile
Finish weight between 2.8-9
So completely against what people conceive as 'normal' huge 40mm egdes, 65mm spine etc.

What criteria did you use to select the cleft, or was that chosen by the player?

They allow me to choose the cleft. Most come from grade 2 or 3 clefts. Something that carries a good grain and high performance but needs to be a lightweight cleft to get the full profiles.

I know grade 2/3 can have performance bats, reason for pros to use them would be price only or in case they're been sponsored for the brand you're making for.
especially after that I'm using 7 star bats it's difficult to believe that grade 2/3 will be better performers.

Great stuff. Good job putting it out there. This will clear some misconceptions regarding pro bats been made from clean looking willow only.

Yea a lot of the pros I've dealt with in the past would all love the top end stuff but when they get 5 bat's at a time it's not commercially viable and at the end of the day they just want something that performs well. The preconceptions seem to come from Asia where the clefts are left out to bake in the sun, resulting in lighter clefts but a lot drier and therefore don't last as long.

@buddyb , did you press the cleft yourself? How is the ping and performance ?
I am a big fan of high performance ugly clefts, I just don't find many bats that meet that criteria.

There is very little performance difference between grades. Grading in a retail environment is based on cosmetic looks. Essentially do you buy a brand new car at full price or the small model with a slight dent. One will sell for more than the other but they both do exactly the same job. That's my views on it anyway.

Without getting told of by admin, this particular cleft would be in my players range at £260.

Yep. I do the whole process my self. Attached a photo to prove I have a press. Ball absolutely flies off it with minimal effort. Will get a video posted up on my social media and link it in

After having so many bats at grade 2,3,4,i don't consider any of them ugly,
I believe that it's the bat maker who knows what quality willow and what pressing a bat has gone through, alongside with it's profile,
It's the user who feels lucky when he gets hold of a bat that's exactly is what he's looking for, it can be a £100 or £500 bat, hopefully it makes sense m

The pros are essentially asking for something quite classic.

Most pro players use a very similar shape to be honest, from all the pros I've met/spoken to/played with they all have one thing in common and that is they want a full bat. I'd say a vast majority of pros are pretty easy to cater for - decently big edges, full back and a duck bill toe a la pretty much every SS TON bat (for example) seems to be what a lot of pros like. This is a very good looking bat. Not the sort of shape I'd use personally, but very nice nonetheless
