Title: Tailsman Perfect Storm - Partial
Post by: cd0070 on February 23, 2010, 06:17:25 PM

Weight: 2.8

Grade: Tailsman Reserve

Profile: Newbery Krakatoa

Stickers: Perfect Storm

Grip: Black

Knocked In: Yes

Price: 200

Handle: SSH

Delivery: Shipped, should receive it by next week.

Looks: Pics look great so far, will write more once I receive it and take a few more pics also.

Pick-up and Feel: Coming soon to a topic near you.

Ping: Release date yet to be determined.

Overall: So far dealing with Mike has been easy and smooth, emails and pm’s are usually answered instantly if not a day the most. We spoke earlier in Jan about the bat and I wasn’t in a rush so the delay from his trip to India didn’t bother me. The first bat he got from Newbery wasn’t up to par with his standards so he had to wait a bit longer to collect another one. That is a testament of the perfectionist Mike is. Will update the rest of the review once I collect the bat and have a net session with it.

Nice bat mate... hope my Storm will be as good as that one :)
I went for the custom with a 1" shorter blade 1" longer handle.

Thanks, I just can't wait to get it in my hands..  :)

Leo, Mike said he has 15 clefts from the same tree all of them should be lovely, if your cleft is from the same tree..

Looks very nice, it really does.
It looks huge for a 2 8 with stickers and grips!
any measurement on the edges and spine?

Bat is 2.8 and a half including stickers, face and double thickness grip, not really selected for grains but they are OK, density was good and low, the bat has 34mm edges and a big overall profile. I hand knocked it in which I rarely do so don't ask me if you order a bat!!! Middle was sensational, truly smile inducing with the hammer, should be a belter and look forward to a report after nets.

Wow.
So many bats, so much choice!
How much did that creaming cat go for last night?

How do you tell if wood is low density by just looking at it?
Title: Re: Tailsman Perfect Storm - Partial
Post by: Mr Cricket on February 24, 2010, 03:12:41 PM
grain structure is a big give away, grains tight together would suggest that it is softer, lighter wood

OK .
Thought it might be more than that. More grains, lighter wood

No, grains do not play a part in density, they are connected to stiffness in the blade, a performance factor but density is size of bat against weight. Basically the biggest bat physically for the dead weight will have the lowest density.

so weight of cleft, not something that can ne seen by eye then.
Cheers,
mark

the tighter the grains, the softer the wood is what ive always been told and softer wood ofeten has lower density

No again to that one, tighter grains from a slower growing tree normally have greater stiffness which allows more energy return from the bat. Many tight grained clefts include a greater proportion of heartwood than standard clefts which is where the sap has left that section of the tree and without the sap is becomes more brittle as the sap is like a glue bonding the fibres together. I feel like Norb....

am i right in thinking that the tighter the grains the faster the tree has grown, and will not neccessarily last as long but will play very well?

Other way round. The tighter the grains the longer the tree has grown for. And with the wider grain clefts, the faster the tree has grown.
On another note, (one for Mike or Norb!) what would be the average weight of a cleft with a low density, before it has been shaped and pressed?

I suggest a few of you guys have a read about what Julian millichamp says about grain structure before believeing everything you read on here!

Be aware that a salesman will always point you in the direction of his wares, and Julian is as good a salesman as he is a bat maker ;)

I'm sure you would, but then your knowledge is limited to what you read, where as I work in the industry, it gives you a decent insight into willow, especially when you produce clefts for the best in England and abroad.

I'd like you to enlighten me as to who you claim you provide willow for as in the best in England and abroad?

Or are you making that claim up?

Is this bat a Newbery with Talisman stickers?  Or a Talisman cleft made by Newbery in the shape of a Newbery with Talisman stickers. The wording in one the the earlier posts confused me.

Looks a beaut whatever it is though!

A copy of the Newbery shape, the bat is a Talisman, nothing else would get to wear the stickers.

I wish, I'm one of the few people on here not claiming to make bats ;)

I get them made by a friend, he worked under John Newbery and alongside Tim Keeley at GN before they both left. I am amazed that he did not carry on with it and have his own label, he is good enough by a mile. He does a few for locals and met in a pub in Kent, my lucky day.

I've had far too much time spent on me to think I could do it day in day out, maybe the odd one in private, cannot make under pressure of being watched.

Got it in today.. The grains are perfect (imo, not too many not too few) just bounced a ball of it for a quick test and boy does it ping!! and that is an understatement.. cant wait to hit the nets with it.. will put up a few more pics..

So the first impression so far is that, the balance on it is amazing, lot of wood for 2.8 and the pickup is feather like..

The packing was also done without cutting any corners.. Very very impressed by the bat and service both!!
