Title: Your kit from 10 years ago vs today...
Post by: Buzz on December 31, 2019, 10:37:57 AM
We are marking the end of a decade, so what better way to compare old kit vs new..

here is my kit from 2010
here is mine:
bats...SAF Genus 2lbs12 (thanks Andy) Kook Ice sub zero 2lbs 10 and a blank pak bat that seriously goes 2lbs 10
kook ice gloves (sub zero 2008 and 850 2010)
Kook Ice pads sub zero
acis gel gully
hawk x pro thigh pad set
shock doc box!
Masuri Ti lid (hidden under the gloves)
bas duffle bag or County steelback depending how much kit I am taking to the game

the most noticeable thing is how little the kit design have changed.
I will post pics of my kit after my birthday in a few weeks time... but I will be using GN pro performance pads which are nearly identical to the kook ones and the GN prestige gloves are also basically the same as the kook ones here
the hawk thigh pads... my biggest regret was selling them... they were the business. my SG ones are good, but I loved the hawk ones.

I wouldn't change my adidas spikes for the gel gully ones in this picture. Spikes are definitely better now than 10 years ago.

sorry about the terrible quality of picture, photobucket isn't letting me log in and get my old pics :(

Not got any pictures but I had:

Adidas Incurza Pro
Newbery TT pads (still got)
Grey NICs predator 4 star gloves
Old masuri
P2s
Kook spikes
And thats it!

Safe to say the forum has cost me a lot

10 years ago I used to play with literally no kit. A bat made out of poplar tree. Used bricks, tree branches etc as stumps. You name it we played it.
Used my first English willow 2 years ago when I started playing league cricket here in UK.

I hadn't discovered CBF back then so I never used to take pictures of my kit.

In the summer of 2010 I had just finished playing colts cricket so it was my first season of proper adult cricket. From memory my kit was:

Chase 150 finback bat
Chase 167 gloves and Chase 175 gloves
Chase 167 pads
Chase outer thigh pad (no inner back then)
Slazenger titanium helmet (the masuri style one)
ASICS gel strike rate shoes (the ones with the funny spikes)

Can only find one photo of my bat from 10 years ago! Was a lovely Bradbury, cracked the toe so I glued it up to try and keep it going... it didn't work.

Pre forum
SS Turbo Grand Prix bat
Sondico canvas pads
SS sausage gloves
Kookaburra 400 bag
That was it
It was looking for recommendations for a new bat that I came across the forum, and as there was no consensus to who made the best bat, my never ending search began.
Loads of bats and other kit later I can only conclude the following:
Pads: morrants or Puma
Gloves: 100% Puma
Bats: anyone you like (though not mass market for me)
Bag: slazenger

I was a member of CBF back then but not very active

From memory I had the following

M&H Solution (purchased after discovering the forum and taking advice) I went on to have the best season ever being the top run getter in the whole division that season - all due to the bat!
M&H Type 2 Pads and gloves
Adidas shoes
Salix Bag
Gm arm guard
No helmet
Cheap pair of thigh pads

Simpler times lol

@Ayrtek Cricket
Right finally gathered together from the 4 corners of the flat, old house and parents house some of my kit!
Still awaiting the C6+ Mjolnir I bought off dan the other day which I may hold onto to see how the carbon handle goes.

Bats

Newbery Mjolnir
Newbery Series 1-nets bat as taped to buggery now!
B52 stickered bat was a blank I got from one of the boys at GCCC but same profile as the series 1 so think it may have been.
Ayrtek match bat from last year
Pimped Fusion Skyer
Usual stuff such as pads/gloves/cock-block/thigh pad etc not very interesting

In the words of Gordon Ramsey....Bat Buying....DONE! Have managed to acquire what are considered best in class (apart from SAF :) obviously ) in the bat department just need to find time in nets to use them so I can see how they perform as a label doesnt guarentee performance as well all know....damn you durex performa!!

Two carbon/carbo handled models to try out to see if they make much difference and some other bats too :)

found an old picture of myself that year and i was using:
Aero P1s - still using them now
Salix Pod 1 bat
top hand glove from GM tecnik gloves (the ones with the weird bottom hand)
bottom hand old MRF split fingered gloves
GM Diamond 5 Star pads - same as the ones tresco wore when he started test cricket
Asics boots can't see which model
Same Albion helmet i have now - modified grill by the DT teacher at the school i was teaching at (to make the gap between visor and grill bigger)

I joined CBF after I started my club cricket.

My first bats were a Kippax (with dragon stickers) and an Ihsan bat. Ihsan's handle didn't lost one season. Kippax is delaminated but still pingy.

Then, I got onto the L&W bandwagon and bought  a few. It was followed by MG2. It was followed by bat maker whose name rhymes with "performance free" - those duds will eventually be used for firewood. Well, from memory, here is the entire progression of the decade:

- Kippax, Ihsan bats. Aero pads. Masuri helmet. Hammer bats.
- L&W. Torpedo bats.
- MG2
- Performance Free, M&H
- CA, Red Ink, Aldred bats.
- GN - AUS made, Keeleys, Ayrtek helmet.

I have gone thru many brands of gloves and found Newbery to be the best.

Good thing about this progression is that I figured out what bat shape, size, and weight works for me.

No idea, they work on my phone, but not the laptop.
I still can't access my pictures properly.

Started playing recently and joined CBF when searching for recommendations. Didn't own a kit back in 2010.

A Bradbury with a crack in it, there's a surprise!!

Saw loads of them in league cricket around Somerset and they were great bats but seemed very brittle and lots cracked during play.

@Ayrtek Cricket

Back when Newbery made proper, traditional bats. Love it!

Sadly I remember 2010 well as it was my best ever year with over 600 league runs and still the last two centuries I scored :(. Still hoping I didn't peak at 23! Much better kit now but fewer runs...

Bat: GM Icon Original
Pads: GM RSB (The ravi bopara/slightly Morrant style ones with only two straps - interestingly the first stage of a quest I'm still on to find pads that properly fit my stumpy legs!)
Gloves: Bradbury I think
Helmet: A horrible GM blue plastic one - probably still in my basement somewhere!
Bag: Slazenger - red and white wheelie - eventually got rid of because it wasn't long enough to fit bats in the main section - a characteristic I still hate today

Those GM RSB pads were the best. I've spent much of the last 10 years trying to find replacements

SM Swagger from OLS if anyone is interested!!!

They’re still in my basement if you want me to dig them out - sure they aren’t beyond use for a refurb guru like yourself. Plus I don’t think I’ve ever used a piece of cricket kit until it’s actually worn out...

Ten years ago, hmm

Think my laver had just died due to a cheap ball at Lynton/lynmouth cc
So I think I had an M&h solution, that snapped in half, as did the one I bought for my son at the same time, hence my hate,(strong word, but shocking aftersales) for their bats and service

But,,,, it did lead me to the forum in my search for something decent

What am I using this year? Dunno, not got round to making it yet

Gloves, will only use top end Slazenger
Boots ,,, love love love my Adidas boosts,(I couldn’t play without them)
Pads, don’t even know what I wear, I think they are keepers pads,( ten years ago would have been gn pads for sure)
I’m quite sure my box is at least ten years old!
Don’t wear helmet/extra padding etc so there’s no difference now to ten years ago

Ha yeah, I remember first net session I took it to one of the older guys at my club saying something along the lines of 'lovely bat, won't last you long though'. Well deserved reputation, saw loads of really really nice Bradburys around that time but never saw one last more than two seasons before ending up in two pieces!

I can only go on what I've seen myself but they used to split a lot around the thin shoulders IIRC.

They used to have lovely shapes and classy stickers - always wanted to get one but they were a bit too expensive for me.

Most of the breakages I saw were catastrophic, that was the thing that really stood out. That sums them up well to be fair, really classy. Still the most I've ever spent on a bat actually.

A bat made out of poplar tree.

Now, tell us - was that English, Kashmiri or Serbian Poplar?  How was the ping?  Did the grains go straight through the toe?  :)
