Title: Big Oval Handles
Post by: FattusCattus on February 28, 2010, 10:42:47 AM
Question for the more knowledgable user / batmakers on this forum.

What's the deal with big oval handles?

I've just picked up a new bat for stock which had a wide oval-shaped handle for the bottom hand. However, I really, really like the feel of it, and I'm considering keeping it as my own match bat. I believe it may have originally come from Warsop.

I'm trying to stop being such a slogger, and become a more correct batman, as such I am really bottom handed when I go for my shots, will this type of handle help correct his, or exaggerate it?

What is the purpose of such a handle?

Is anyone else a fan of this type if handle?

I think it is the same concept as the half grip at the bottom of the handle. To stop you gripping it too tightly. My LH warsop has an oval handle. I don't really mind this, but prefer my round handle with a shock absorba grip

Ive had a Solitaire made with an oversized oval handle, its much like a tear drop in shape if you look at it from end on. I always put 2, 2 1/2 grips on the handle but with this design i haven't needed to.

Not used it much as of yet as prefer my H4L Excel but will use it during the season no doubt. . . .when I go through a lean patch . . . .and i'll blame the Excel! haha. . . .then switch to the solitaire

I have a big oval handle and have for the past 3 years. Im also very bottom handed (apparently its because i line everything up with my right eye) it's helped me massively as it keeps the 'v' between thumb and fore finger on the handle rather than grip it like a baseball bat. Helps hit through the ball a bit more with your bottom hand rather than cutting across it. Hope that helps.

My opinion of the oval handle is its supposed to help you play straighter and present the full straight blade to each shot ?

I thought it was also designed so that the bat cannot twist as easily in the hands during a shot compared to a traditional round handle.

Thats what I thought, also because that it helps you play straighter and provides more control through the shot.

I like the oval handles and I am still bottom hand happy, but I prefer the oval handle as it 'fits' better in my hand IMO

I much prefer the oval shaped handle, I have a shock-absorba grip on too. To counteract my bottom-handedness I grip the top hand really tightly before the ball is bowled and do several exercises to improve fore-arm muscle strength on my left arm (RH bat)

best of luck in this quest! I really like the bigger oval handle - but if you want to change the way you bat you may need to change what is inbetween your ears, not just your bat handle...!  ;)

A oval handle and Fattus' handle in question is a big oval unlike the average one will force a correct grip and prevent rotation of the hand. This can be used/abused by the batsman as they see fit. I find it gives me confidence and without it I may well change my grip in an innings without noticing.

So it's going to turn me into a proper batsman then?

Sorry Bully-beef, as Mikey baby will know, I was trapped in the shop - it's great to be busy, but it does rather limit my cricket-kit buying abilities.

Lovely to hear boss.  I loved those Pink stickers you did for our Ladies bats, let's hope you can do our Stickers when we change our ranges!
