With Buttlers current struggles, Bairstow in and out faster than a South African batting line up and Foakes seemingly discarded I’m interested to see who the majority want to keep in tests.
-
Anyone saying other than Foakes is on drugs. Bairstow and Buttler had their chances but neither matched Foakes for keeping ability or put up the weight of runs to justify their selection on that basis. Foakes needs an extended run and a chance to show the value of his glovework.
-
Did anyone see the stats from Cricviz that showed the value of runs scored by a keeper/batsman outweighs the ‘specialist keeper’ requirement from runs lost through byes/any missed chances.
Suppose it doesn’t help when the keeper/batsman isn’t scoring runs either...
-
This is looking like more of a landslide than I expected
-
For me it depends where the series is. On turning pitches where the keeper is stood up for long periods against a turning ball, than Foakes all day long. On flatter pitches where it's not turning square and we're playing mainly seamers, then Bairstow for me at 7, as I still think he's the better batmen in that position.
Although I appreciate that's not a popular opinion!
-
So you’d only play Foakes in Asia on that basis as at home it will mainly be seamers too?
-
The next tour being SL should help Foakes get in the side, Butler is ahead of Bairstow for me but has not really done enough these last 6 months to be an automatic pick.
Long term thou England's green shoots of a batting recovery may help Foakes .. burns, Sibley, Crawley have done well and we now have a specialist batsman at number 6(fantastic). Dom Bess can def bat so if he plays in Sri Lanka the batting looks OK to me.
Yes the keeper has to score runs and Foakes is decent,so if you look at the last 3 years how much runs have we really got from the batsman/keeper position?
Not enough to justify a batsman who keeps doing the job...
Time for a long term change of thinking whether it's home or away.
I'm a bit biased, along with the top 3 I believe the keeper should be a keeper first, as in a specialist. Foakes is a pretty good bat as it happens as well but there's no one even close to him for keeping- he is as good as we have had since Jack Russell.

Looking at the figures following De Kocks 200th dismissal, he has only taken 11 stumpings, Healy 14, Gilchrist 18.
The former 2 keeping arguably to the greatest spinner of all time. With test match quality batsmen and average spinners Is Foakes going to get the opportunities stood up to the wicket anyway?

Ben Cox is the best keeper in the country. He should be an option

Better than Foakes? I’ve not seen him

Please don't get caught up thinking that keeping is just catches and stumpings. It is so much more than that.
If a keeper is untidy, then the whole team looks untidy, he is in the game more then any other player in the field.
He must keep the rest of the team going, be the heart beat of the team and keep at the same time. He must also help judge angles of setting the field.
Do you get this from Buttler at the moment? Would Foakes do it better?
I can tell you for certain that you would get more pressure on the batsmen straight away knowing Foakes is behind you. Along with the option that Foakes can stand up to the stumps to Curran, Broad and Anderson to put pressure on.

It’s ok I understand being a keeper myself.
Not sure he would be stood up to Jimmy or Broad to be fair, Curran yes.

He is a class keeper and very good one day & T20 batsman, but he was dropped from the Worcester side last season for loss of form with the bat.
-
Talk about not appreciating what you've got!
-
Foakes obviously isn’t the direction genius Ed Smith wants to take. Buttler and Bairstow have had numerous attempts to cement a place, and failed. I wouldn’t be surprised if Billings is given a go before Foakes gets the call.

I’m terms of glove work, I do think he’s better than Foakes, yes

That’s quite exciting, I’ll have to see if I can watch any footage of him. Thanks

I don't think they'll be looking outside of Buttler, Bairstow and Foakes any time soon.
Foakes had a poor season with the bat last year. Buttler was carried by the hype of the World Cup victory.
-
Butler receiving a lot of backing from the England coaches in the press today.
Might just be words for his and the rest of the teams benefit.
Could also mean Butler may be given more time to make an impact after a good 2018.
Interesting to see which way they go for the SL tour. Speculation of course but they may be thinking if Foakes goes to Sri Lanka and then we revert back to a batsman keeper, what would the point be for one tour to do that?
I think Foakes is the missing link in this new side that would improve it....but since Gilchrist I suppose things have changed for that role.
Butler also lost the vice captaincy for no real reason other than to give it back to Stokes far as I can see....its 50/50 call I think from the selectors, Butler maybe might get a bit longer....

Buttler will get Sri Lanka
Good player of spin had a decent tour last time too
