Title: Batting advice
Post by: hammersjr on February 08, 2020, 12:01:39 PM
Hi Guys,

Ever since we've started winter nets a few weeks back my batting has felt terrible, one of the guys managed to record a session (looks as bad as it feels ha) so thought I'd put it on here. Some of the things I've already noticed myself from the clip is: Sure I'm moving before release and playing the ball far too early. Bat path/angle is closing off and I'm probably only presenting 3/4 of the bat. Hips are opening up & back foot coming through the shot. These might all be linked together, but if anyone could take a few minutes to watch and has thoughts on the above or can offer any advice from the clip it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
James

I’m far from a batting coach but the first thing I’d be looking at is the little front foot shuffle before the balls released, means your having to move twice if it’s full.

Looks like you have a ridiculously strong grip on both the top and bottom hands. You can get away with a strong top hand, but not so much the bottom. I had a similar issue a couple of weeks ago, and I tried the Adam Gilchrist trick of sticking a squash ball in the palm of the bottom hand. It only allows you to grip the bat with the thumb, index and middle finger, and it worked wonders. The bat is closing because of the grip and because you’re playing so early. I reckon the reason why you take your bottom hand off the bat so often is because you can tell it doesn’t feel quite right through impact.

Also, when you try to be aggressive you’re even earlier on the shot, you lift you head up and take your eye off the ball and totally lose your shape.

Finally, you let your frustration at bad shots build up, and you get more and more frustrated the longer you bat. It’s easier said than done, but try and forget about the last shot regardless of whether it was great, or an absolute shocker.

Plus points... solid defence. Good head position at impact. The bat also comes down nice and straight when you’re not trying to wallop the cover off it.

The thing about asking for advice is that you will get loads of different views/opinions

If I were coaching you I would look at your grip and diamond set up.

I’d be frustrated too, if I had to net with bowling like that  :D

Not a batting coach but personally I would start with, what is your position as you are about to hit the ball. You bring your bat down and behind you as you are about to hit the ball, this limits your bat flow and cramps you. Although lots of the top batsmen have different technique, they all get into a very similar position as they are about to hit the ball, I would try and mimic this with your setup.

And out of all the advice this is the person I’d be listening to

Other than Steve Smith, this is where you want to get to by changing your grip

I'm no coach, but you look good on the legside and with cut shots to me. When you try an off drive the shoulder comes round a bit too front on and the RH comes in to make a cross bat shot. For me this was improved by making sure my left shoulder and hence head goes down towards the ball during or just before the down swing. Also I noticed that your set up has the bat pointing out towards third slip, which you then correct to about 1st slip just before playing the shot. This initial set up might be unhelpful as your alignment is perhaps naturally to make a legside swing? Anyway, feel free to ignore as I've never coached, just listened to coaches.

Interestingly enough, this is the position from which Amla would attack the ball but with a very pronounced flourish.

If I were coaching you I would look at your grip and diamond set up.

Agree with this thoroughly.

I dont know why with so many shots your bottom hand comes off but it looks like you are straightening your top hand (across your body) instead of keeping that "diamond shape" with a high front elbow resulting in a whole host of other things going wrong.

To help keep this shape you may want to try cock your wrists / unweight / get the bat up a bit more vertical.  It will help both delay your shot as well as help the shape on the (mainly bottom) hand.  As another poster said, dipping your shoulder towards the ball is another bio-mechanical way to try to achieve this shape.

Playing check drives keeping both hands on the bat is a good way to practise keeping the diamond shape getting that bat up in front of you parallel to the ground in follow through.

Thanks to everyone for their advice on here! Sorry it’s taken a while to get back on here.

I’m going to be working on a few bits that have been brought up and have organised some coaching to groove my
technique.

Thanks again to all on here

Personally think you could change a few things,

You're very bottom hand dominant in your shots (see first shot in video and 2:50), and consequently you look more comfortable off middle/leg and leg than driving through the covers, quite a few straight balls are defended into mid wicket. I don't know whether that's a tight grip or whether you're trying to hit everything like an exocet. Try to hit through the V as much as you can, and not to grip the bottom hand so tightly. I find throw downs driving through the v a good way to practice.

Your feet seem really narrow in your stance and your shoulder alignment seems to be at midwicket (Could be your camera angle). Personally I'd look to have a wider base and align your left shoulder between mid-on or the left stump up the other end.

Just my view and you may well disagree
Good luck, I'm sure you'll smash it !

The thing about asking for advice is that you will get loads of different views/opinions

If I were coaching you I would look at your grip and diamond set up.

I think this is the advice you need... plus I would book a session with a bowling machine so you can groove a few things with semi consistent line and length... once you get the feeling back on a consistent delivery.. it should be easier to transfer the technique onto more "varied" deliveries I would have thought.

Just an idea.
