Hi all, wanting to get more involved in the forum so starting with this... just picked it up, couldnt resist it, what do you all think?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164061805402 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164061805402)
Also can anyone tell me the best way to upload pictures?
-
Easiest way to post pictures on here is to upload them to https://postimages.org
Then copy the "hotlink for forums" into the body of your massage on here :)

Looks a nice grainy stick. Is that giant dead knot in the shoulder though?
-
It looks a lot worse in real life than it does in the picture, and, fingers crossed the ball wont be hitting it, so I'm not too fussed myself, the rest of the stick more than makes up for it to me
-
Looks lovely, I personally can’t stand phantom just the people that run it. Love the way the seller has pictures his elbow to prove he’s injured 😂😂
-
Looks really great. I can't imagine the shoulder knot can affect performance. The £450 Salix looks amazing too. Let's hope even 2lb 5oz turns out to be too heavy for him. 😂 But seriously, it must be difficult to get the same momentum through the shot with such a light bat. If you're injured I suppose it's the only option.

I am in the same boat. I can’t stand phantom for the same Reason.

Lovely grainy stick! Looks SS made though, would be good to get a few more pics of the shoulders

Doubt it effects performance but can be a week spot, I got a bat that would have been a ‘Pro’ grade for sure from H4L for £100 due to such a knot.

Id rather take the Salix every day of the week!
Its made by Robinsons
Is this the case for all Phantom bats now?

I would too at that price

So what's with the dislike for phantoms ownership guys? First I've ever heard of it, but then I'm not so clued in to this type of thing yet 😂

I have no personal vendetta against phantom. They were TK made and fairly reasonably priced not too long ago. But since they increased their prices and outsourced manufacturing to RS in india (who can post any of their top of the range bats worldwide for USD250 plus postage) i have disregarded phantom as just another insignificant sticker brand that nobody cares about. I would much rather go with Blank bats who are still TK made and very reasonably priced
-
Ah I see, yeah I will admit that their prices seem a bit ridiculous compared to some of their competition, especially considering their not one of the "established" brands if you get what I mean. Still tempted to pick up their softs and go FKW but we'll see 😂
-
Lovely looking bat, nice profile, and made by someone who knows what they are doing
Decent weight too
I’ve paid more in the past for bats not as nice as that
I’m sure it plays as good as it looks
-
On a positive note, if you go FKW, Phantoms sifts have always been amongst the very best, albeit with a price tag to match.
-
6 months ago if someone had written 'V.Kholi' on the bottom of that in sharpie and left the stickers off, people would have been all over it. Clean grains, nice profile, light weight. Hope it goes well for you mate.
-
There’s a lot of post bashing on the forum of late...
Looks a decent bat, was tempted myself if I hadn’t already sorted my match bat this season. Incidentally from Cowboy @Canners haha

I did warn you that bat was going to better than all your bats 🤣
-
That phantom looks lovely BTw
-
Their gear is on the pricey side but their softs particularly are of a very high standard.
I met the owner a couple of years ago as i live in W Sussex and went to the warehouse in Three Bridges and he couldn`t have been more charming, but all subjective,i guess
-

A bit harsh... they have very nice branding, good looking softs (not used them myself)...
The only thing is if they are leading people on that their bats are UK manufactured (I have no proof if they are leading people on or not) ... other than that I really don't get what issue people have with them. They are no different to many other brands out there.
-
I stand corrected. I meant to say "I don't care about". And the price i quoted is absolutely true and quoted to me by the owner of RS i.e. INR 17500 plus whatever the postage is to whichever part of the world for the top of the range bat in any weight and profile i want. Its shocking yes but it is what it is. And i dont know the math of what shipping and import charges are from india to UK so maybe someone can help me out with that. And by no means in my opinion are indian made bats any inferior to UK made ones infact the 90 quid RS butterfly has replaced the 250 quid BB as my main match bat this season and i just scored a brutal 143 off 65 with it last night. All im saying is im now the kind who looks at the willow not the stickers. If someone told me that i would have to pay 450 quid for an RS made phantom i would rather take my chances and get in touch with RS directly and have them give me their bespoke custom bat experience where i choose my cleft, profile and weight. BB is also a sticker brand yes. But i didnt decide to buy BB because of their stickers (or lack there of), i researched on UK made bats and wanted a TK bat and found them to be very reasonably priced. I hope y'all get where im coming from.

You need to remember some of the brands mentioned in the topic are VAT registered and some arent which can add 20% to the overall cost of a bat for a UK based company.
I dont think Dan was questioning the cost of an RS bat at 250 GBP more the fact once you add shipping, import tax/duty onto that you're probably going to be over £300 anyway.
Having originally sourced my bats from TK (and helped a few people obtain Tim's phone number in order for them to set-up their brand) I decided to go elsewhere when i knew I needed a point of difference to the brands that didnt sell equipment to rely on the margins to pay overheads and werent VAT registered and therefore could undercut my pricing for a product that came from the same source.

Could you explain exactly what it means to be VAT registered, and why some companies aren't? I've heard the term used a fair bit recently but have no idea what it means!
-
My issue with many these brands, is they all build their name not as a quality brand or manufacturer but by simply piggybacking on the name of a batmaker. If that batmaker makes for other brands (like Tim Keeley), then you can only expect to be undercut.
It's so easy to undercut in the cricket world as it's easy to launch a brand as a hobby sticking a few stickers on some bats, making a nice, but small, £50 margin. Now when you're expecting the brand to be a full-time job, £50 profit selling a couple of hundred bats is not even going to cover the cost of an office.

Tim Keeley buys willow from JS Wrights for £50.00 a cleft, with a VAT of £10.00, paying a total of £60.00. JS Wright send the £10.00 of VAT to HMRC (aka the Government).
Tim then sells his blank bats to a cricket brand for £100.00, plus a VAT of £20.00, for a total of £120.00. As, Tim already paid £10.00 of VAT in the initial transaction, he only pays the other £10 of VAT at this stage to HMRC.
The cricket brand charges a final consumer £300.00 for the bats, of which £50.00 of this is VAT to HMRC. However, since HMRC has already collected £20 of VAT at the previous production stages, the retailer only sends £30 in VAT.
So the final VAT of £50.00 has been received in parts, at different stages of the value-adding process. In short this means a none-VAT registered business can charge a slightly lower price. From the example above a VAT registered business walks away with £270 in cash. Whereas a none-VAT registered would walk away with £300 cash.

Nice looking bat. Welcome to the forum.

And the issue with VAT is that companies with very small turnover (or is it profit?) below around £30K per year, I think, don't have to charge vat. Hence an undercutting possibility of you are a small scale business. Its the same with e. g. Electricians. If they are a single man outfit they often don't charge VAT, but if they're a big company they have to charge VAT. A bit unfair.
-
You can voluntarily register for VAT if you choose to do so or you must register once you turn over more than 85k as Dan has said.
The benefit is that you can claim back VAT on the goods purchased (assuming who you purchase from is VAT reg) but also have to charge it on goods sold.

Can't find a more recent Phantom topic than this, so I'll post this here.
I just saw the Phantom redesign, and whilst the stickers are undeniably incredibly well-designed, intricate, and high quality, they are just so unsymmetrical. I normally love their kit... A dumb hot take, I know. What does the forum think?

A link or a photo would have been handy…

Jeeeeez, that is not an improvement. Front sticker looks absolutely awful.
-
Yeah, I’m probably not their target market, but those front sticker are a bit much in every possible way.
I presume they’re no longer using creative edge.
-
I think they would just about work if they scrapped all those wee boxes etc on the left side, though wouldn’t be to my tastes still.
-
Colour scheme on the Medusa looks like a cross between a toddler's favourite TV show and a spillage in the paint aisle at Homebase. Awful.
-
I think the PS7 looks great. The others aren’t really to my taste.
-
Does the forum already know about the Paul Cole Cricket You Tube channel? Seems this is his new favourite brand.
-
Seem to be UK made again?

IJC were always quite big on Phantom IIRC.
-
The sticker ideas are quite cool in my opinion, its just the execution and the colour scheme that didn't match up with the idea.
-
Looks really great.
Probably another discussion altogether. What’s up with Phantom?
-
Seem to be UK made again?
Maybe not. :(

I believe some are UK made and some are Indian made. The ones I got recently were Indian made, but they do advertise UK made bats as well

I thought I saw something that suggested as much, hence my first post. Then I couldn't find it, so backtracked.
Must keep up appearances on CBF! :o
