All the different parts are on the right hand side. Slightly cringeworthy, but lots of info.
About 40 mins long, but best video around.
-
very cringing! "Swanny"!
-
Did he have a script, and is trying to remember it all :L
-
Well, surely swanny would know that the handle is made out of different wood to the blade! lol
-
Video 4 is funny, picks up what is a thin bat and is like, "thats a pretty big bat", "its pretty big" haha
-
I'll have that one :D lol
-
Pretty funny, "Swanny's" tracksuit is so new it is still has it's creases in!
-
think they are getting there moneys worth out of that new sponsorship deal! good vid though.
-
And he is wearing the all rounder shoes lol :D
-
Very interesting set of films, they are at the forefront of willow preparation, very impressed with their set up, CNC was impressive but the finish from it was not as good as it could be. Glad they are showing off the factory, shame more did not invest in UK manufacturing.
-
Very impressive, if slightly cringeworthy at the start! That CNC machine is a serious piece of kit. I suppose that what you must need to mass produce on that scale these days - or an army of indian guys
-
I cringed when I saw the CNC it was like butchery!!!! Poor old Kev I hope he get a few more things to do other then handles!!!!!
-
Couldn't help feeling sorry for kev doing the handles only, got the feeling his skills are being wasted a bit.
Although it is an awesome bit of kit, such a fine line between "consistent high quality" and "mass produced". Kind of reminded me of Monty Don's "mastercrafts", anyone seen it? He was saying how the farmers used to burn threshing machines back in the day as it took away there jobs! Wonder if kev hates the CNC machine, I think I do!
-
just getting through them and laughing at the video skills of these pair on camera! everything in the video is wooden....not just the bats!
-
Agreed, its awful, but if you just listen to the info its a very good set of videos as tom said...
Reminds me of drama or personal education when you do role plays with scripts and you get given ten or so mins to learn a script then your chucked in the deep end!
School Boy!!!
-
Bet that CNC cost them a few quid!!!! interesting stuff though good bit of CAD/CAm combo there takes me back to Uni days or modelling a tea pot! lol
-
Ayrtek can you get a video of how your lids are made :D
-
Kev makes the bats for the international players, the machine makes for everyone else. Odd that they have to carve the bow in the bat, thought they might have been able to do it with the press.
-
I can do but would need someone to hold the camera for me as the dog wasnt very useful last time...kept gettin distracted by the tennis ball!
Would be exciting and would mean trips to 3 different places to record and a road trip around the UK to our manufacturers.
-
Not sure what he means by "Our bats pickup just that little bit better" after weighing it with Swann dog. Every bat will be different, even if they are all made to the same specifications, surely?
-
Who doesn't make a bat that picks up lighter than the dead weight? It is just a common marketing phrase that is meaningless.
-
Nevermind.
-
pleased to hear Kev gets to use his talents! :-)
-
One of the best videos around in my opinion, great to see them taking you through the process in lots of detail...
That is a beast of a CNC and interesting that they use it to achieve the bow in the bat instead of using the press to do this.
Certainly did sound a bit scripted!

Part 2 at 3:04 cheeky little pic of a half naked women in the back ground on the workbench :)

Go careful some forum members may find that "orgasmic" ;)
-
This makes me want to try out a GM DXM! Good video although the old guy in part 1 annoys me!
Trust them to leave the stickering and gripping to women!!
-
Couldnt understand why they shave the handles to tie in with the bat before glueing them in place surely its more efficient to glue the handle in place then use the drawknift to tidy it up so its smoother?
-
Eactly what i thought tom, less chance of making a mistake and making it look crap if you shape it after gluing surely :S
-
Yeah surely more time effective for the bloke who then has to line it up exactly and hammer it in place....if he glued them and then they shaved the excess parts off it would save him a fiddly job and give a perfect alignment!
-
Never seen a handle being planed before apart from in both GM film's. I think they are trying to show that they go further in quality but I bet if their jigs are set up as well as they should they don't ever have to do this. Also agree with the handle being shaved first, odd choice. But they do make a decent bat, they'd be my choice of shop bat after Newbery.
-
Yeh I can see why their bats are more expensive than other companies if they are making them on the CNC here in the UK. The overheads and staff costs for all involved in the process soon add up and need covering in the cost of the goods going out the door.
CNC must have cost £500,000 at least i would think!

Some of the younger members no doubt!!! ;)
-
Quality set of films, I really like their approach to batmaking in getting each one as consistent as possible in finishing the product and preparing it. The CNC machine, although it looks like it butchers the bats, really makes the difference in the sheer volumes of bats made. 3500 bats at a time in the kiln, sheer volumes and I loved the way Graeme Swann acted.
-
Some people will like the CNC approach others wont...psersonally anything made of wood i would like to have hand crafted by someone as it's a natural material that can be shaped in this way with each one being slightly different to the next one off the workbench....but then thats just me as wood is one of the few materials you can do this with (other than plastercine;)
-
and I loved the way Graeme Swann acted.
Shitly? lol :D
-
and the rest tom the cnc i used to operate was £250,000 and that could only do one piece of glass, very expensive things but do a great job for precison
-
You could tell swann thought it was sh*t though in the way he acted i reckon!
-
£600K I hear.
-
i like how they like to keep mentioning cad cam as i used to do the same thing to confuse the bosses as only one was trained on it ha

i have used both newberry and gm and whilst impressed a little with newberry i would not get another gm for the money i paid for a purist i could have got a much better bat from elswere.
in my opinion and it is my opinion i would rather now go to a specilist bat maker than using big brands form the uk i have used a Laver now for 3 seasons with other bats from indenpendant sources and have found a difference in terms of pefromance which i have not found in big brand bats.
it might be a one off yes but i will only go for bats which i know will perfom or i get my money back(easy said than done)
marty graham might be my next port of call in the cricket bat world for my bat or maybe somebody off here.
i just feel with the big company's if your not getting it off somebody in the know than your gambling but with custom bat makers you seem to get that little bit more chance of getting a gun bat.
my opinion only
-
gm best in the market imo. love the poor acting from "swann'eh" what a man!
-
CRINGEE! wow, that was tough to get through.... Good video but done extremely badly! They must have spent all their money on the cnc.
