Title: Bat designs
Post by: Butterfingerz on April 21, 2020, 04:57:02 PM
Hi all, we hope you’re all staying healthy and safe during these difficult times.

With HQ being currently closed I have a little time on my hands. If anyone has ever thought they would like to create their own bat shape and have it drawn up I’d be happy to do so for the first 10 I receive.

Please feel free to send me some strange shapes and let’s see what we get.

I will share the best ones on here.

Please send you sketches to richard@b3cricket.com

Think i've gone a little bit different asking to find out how much a bat that's 40mm from toe to shoulder on the edges and 67mm from a mid sweet spot up to the shoulders and into the handle (Extreme oval hey) will weigh. At least it will have a duckbill to keep the weight down and should pick up well :D

It's got to be a full profile too...

5/6lb plus do we think? maybe even more on density maybe...

I would like to see the back of the bat with a series of flutes, perhaps 6, each of which about 10mm wide and varying in depth from the shoulder to the toe (shallower at toe and shoulder and deeper in the middle). Think of it as a bat with 6 concaved sections.
I think this will allow for a maximum sized bat but with a manageable weight and without the possible negatives of only 2 concaved sections. Hope that makes sense.

Or a normal bat with a recorder in the handle so you can celebrate a ton with a rendition of londons burning.

There've been a few posts about pro's bats having thicker shoulders. I've picked a few of the WilloStix shoulderless bats recently where the shoulders are rounded off but their weight/volume is still next to the splice. So you get thick shoulders without taking the wood from the middle.

Thick oval handle. (Non of the thin round handle tosh).

High middle (L&W Mega, because most of us hit the ball higher up than we think).

Spine into the rounded tapered toe. (Non of this squared off vulnerable duckbill fad thingy).

So going against most modern trends, it won't sell but I reckon it will go well.

Or if you really have time on your hands, add a Stuka siren to a bat so those with a high back lift can terrify the bowlers.

Or make a machine that can do a ping test.

^ Yes, the cricket world needs a Ping Test machine.

Since we have free time on our hands, we need to standardize swing weight, location of node of percussion, density, balance point, and dead weight for bats. If we can throw in the ping measurement as well, bat buying would become such an easy process!

Do you mean like an extended version of the GN mega drive (the blue markings on the back are channels cut into the willow)

Could you replicate a GN Scoop?

There will be others on here that know more about this, but I believe GN have patents and copyrights on their various scoop designs. Not sure if these things are time limited, but I imagine that this will prevent other manufacturers from producing similar scoop designs

So it expired 30 years ago but no one (other than GN) has done their own version since, maybe time for B3 to give it a go?

yea done a fair few replica scoops and dynadrives. Got another "scoop" style bat to do once back in the workshop. Got asked to do some prototypes combining hockey stick designs into cricket bat's to see how they would look with a scoop style in them. I'll try and dig out the photos at some point.

Could you replicate a GN Scoop?

@Sloggerz  There has been several versions from GN, (Original short scoop, Long scoop from 2010's and then the scoop through the whole back) do you have one in mind?
