So birthday weekend has delivered a few gifts to get me back into bat making.
Workbench from Axeminster tools. double vice, heavy duty bolted to the floor and also ordered 4 paving slabs to add weight to bottom and wood to make shelving underneath.
2 vintage Draw Knives picked up from a tool fair over the winter. Been repaired and sharpened by my dad who also made me some wooden blade covers. He is a carpenter which is handy.
Also a new one but also got me a Pull Shave. Same as a hand plane 5” rounded blade. Seems to think they are easier to start with that a traditional plane so I’ll see.
Need to get a travisher Or spoke shave for the shoulders, polishing wheel and then of course the clefts. Think I’m sorted on that part just need to get them delivered.
Any spare start up tools or advice well appreciated.

Good luck mate, sure you'll provide some stunners! I've got the Ray Iles Travisher and it's a lovely tool. The quangsheng spokeshave I bought recently is a really good to use too. Happy to bounce ideas around if needed anytime mate.

Good luck mate, looks a nice set up you've got going.
I personally would recommend a hand plane over the pull through as I find them easier to use especially on stained wood.
The pull through I had tended to struggle with that.
You can pick them up pretty cheap on ebay.
Other than that, just enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice about the pull shave. My dad says he prefers these as a newbie as he seemed to say they were a bit more forgiving. What Plane would you recommend as a good all round plane to start with?? Seen people mention a No5 plane a lot on previous threads.
Also where do people get the twine for handle binding please as going to have a go at making a turning lathe manual to start with for the binding

Never used a pull shave but you really can't go too wrong with a hand plane. An old wooden bodied plane is ideal but just a standard block plane works well.
Recommendation I picked up off here for twine is Henry Winning butchers twine, lots to choose from on their site.

Number 5 plane is basically the jack of all trades plane.
Smaller planes tend to be a little harder to use or to grip,
Larger planes are a bit unnecessary. I'd go for either a 5 or 5-1/4 (slightly narrower and smaller than the 5). If you are doing the edges to width, maybe a 4 or 3, but it can also be done with a 5.
I've got a pretty small round bottom plane that's good but also a bit of a ball ache on the hands to grip., thays why I prefer my Ray iles Travisher for concaving.

I have a very small but top notch selection now to last me a while. And yea if I get good I could find my addictive personality becomes a problem letting bats go lol however I think it will take me a little while to get back into the swing of things

First couple of part made clefts picked up today. Handled and pressed.
Cleft on the right is 3lb 0.3oz cleft on the left is 3lb 3.9 oz so decent weights to start with.
Time so see how they come out over the next few days.
Ordered a new Makita orbital sander and also picked up some used tolls a record Flat bottom spoke shave, custom made plane from local bat maker and a Stanley rasp today As well.

Do you have a shape in mind for the first one? Your favoured shape or something determined by the characteristics of the cleft?

I’m cold ping something based on a Kook Ghost as trying to start with a fairly full shape to start with. But will see how it turns out. It will probably look nothing like a ghost lol
