Recommendations for where to get trainers spiked please!
I've bought a pair of Asics Gel-Quantum to get spiked and want to make sure I know all the options before choosing who to go with.
-
Where are you based?
Brian and Brenda do a good job, as does the shoe Dr in Taunton.
There is also a company in India who make very nice looking spiked up trainers, but they are expensive.
-
I'm in South Bucks. Shoe Doctor is the one I know about.
-
I had my most recent pair done by Cheshire Shoe Repairs who were a good price and turned them round very quickly: http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=45872.msg739981#msg739981 (http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=45872.msg739981#msg739981)

I've got some trainers I'm looking to get spiked up. Looking at sending them to Cheshire shoe repairs- does anyone have any examples of their work?

Had these done about 3 seasons ago. Still hanging in there. Lost one front spike on a rock hard track taking middle and there is a bit of rounding where I drag my back foot. Cheshire Shoe Repair also 👍 would recommend.

Cheers guys they both look really decent! Reassuring the longevity too! I'll get them sent off to them

The hardest part is finding decent white trainers

How would you rate these as batting spikes? I have a pair in my shopping basket waiting for me to purchase
-
I'm assuming that these spiked up trainers offer basically no protection against the impact of the ball? Do you guys not worry about yorkers?

I have to say that the modern cricket shoe offers no protection in this regard. I currently have a pair of Adidas SL22s and New Balance CK10s and neither offers anything in the way of toe protection.
-
I'd say you are right :D but I also think most of the boots on the market these days wont give you much if any protection either. Having taken a yorker in both spiked up runners and a pair of Adidas Vectors - I lost toe nails on both occasions and had a bit of pain for a bit but overall it wasn't too bad.
-
I’ve a top solution for these issues lads.
Use you’re bat, I can safely say that I’ve never been hit in the foot by a ball unless I accidentally hit it into my foot or hit my foot with my bat. Haha
-
My Payntr shoes at least have a bit of a shell around the toe but my foot was still black the last time somebody got me with a really good yorker.
-
I had some trainers done a fair few years ago at Brian and Brenda and they were on a different level of comfort. Most of these spiking companies make sure that the sole comes right round to the toe box area so there is a bit of protection
-

I picked up some gel kayano 25s fairly cheap in my local ASICS outlet store so hoping they turn out decent!

I've been a big fan, but if purely for batting shoes I'd at least consider something lighter - they're not too bad but definitely on the sturdy side, excellent for an allrounder.
Do specialist cricket spikes genuinely offer much toe protection? Can't say I've ever had a pair that have been any different from tennis shoes which is what I've used the last few years.

I used Quick Service Shoe Repairs in Haverhill to do my spiking this year. Very pleased with the result.
Still wear SL22s/ NB CK10AA to bowl in but looking to replace with some spiked trainers.

Ive had a few pairs done through Owzat (who use Brian & Brenda) my only issue is the sew part of the sole which after a while creates a weakness at the edge of the sole and the sole starts to peel away.
Current pair were done at Shoe Doctor and it’s a much better finish IMO

So I just got these back through the post from Cheshire shoe repairs! I’m really happy with the result so thanks for the recommendations! Would definitely recommend Cheshire Shoe repairs for anyone else looking into getting some trainers spiked

Nice! What are the pricings? Got a pair of half spiked NB trainers i need replacing
-
They were £42 for full spike including return postage-I think half spike is £35. Really happy with the result and it was a really good turnaround time given that we have had some snow and poor weather which could have affected the post both ways!

That's really helpful, thanks. It had been 5 years since I last bowled in a game so something lighter sounds a better better. I am one it seems of a number who suffer from plantar fascia and also achillies pain so have been looking for something that offers more stability

Plantar fascia seems the latest forum trend! I had nasty achilles pain problems a couple of years ago after recovering from a leg break and do think sorting sports shoes out was what got rid of it in the end.

I over-pronate when running which puts pressure on my foot and achillies. Running is fine because there is good availability of specialist shoes but cricket shoes don't offer the same choice
-
Plantar fascia is horrific, I got it about a year after recovering from chronic shin splints for two years.
Ill be sorting a pic of my spikes I got done once my refurb from Neon comes back, used once already in last game of the season and I love them.
-
I was going to send a pair over to a guy at SpyderBats Uk, based in Stoke. However talking to him he recommended tennis shoes for seam bowling in trainer spikes.
Having had no new bowling boots since 2015 I may bite the bullet and buy some specialist bowling boots. Instead of playing spiked up trainer lottery with injuries, have spiked up trainers for batting

Yes if you look at most of the pros who use spiked up trainers, they are pretty much always tennis shoes due to the extra support and they offer better durability than regular trainers for those who drag their foot when batting. Stokes has used a variety of this Adidas model for the past few years

It's a good recommendation, tennis shoes suit the job very well. Extremely popular with Australian seamers if you look closely.

Stokes uses Ultraboosts.

If you can a pair, these Asics cross trainers are amazing, best support i`ve ever had,,,Bill and Brenda did mine 7 years ago, still going strong
Before Asics really went into Uk cricket shoe market, they were spiking these up for the Pro`s,Jimmy A used to wear some

In fact,i do have a 11.5/Euro 47 spare pair(unspiked)if anyone needs..
-
I have caved, having talked some more I am going to be purchasing a pair...pics to come shortly
-
Having spoken to the guy bought them I went for these, the bloke himself has done spiking up for a lot of the Indian cricketers showing me pictures of Tendulkar, Dhoni and Kohli all wearing trainers they have had spiked up by him. From the photos he has done a good job and they look sturdy! Will be swapping out the black laces for white!
In fact looking on his facebook, it looks like hes got multiple sizes of Asics spiked and ready to go. They all look like the Asics that are currently on sale in the Asics Warehouse. Overall it cost me £75 inc delivery for the boots which i think is a pretty good deal. Good enough that if they do break its not a bank breaker to buy a new pair

Deffo mate, just gave him a quick whatsapp had a quick chat and he wasnt trying to sell me any over priced shoes, and told me what type i would need for the right support
Highly recommend him!

Stokes uses Ultraboosts.
Nope definitely uses the Adidas SoleCourt Tennis shoes to bat and bowl in.
His famous Headingley innings was in a pair of Adidas Harden basketball trainers
No fast bowler could wear ultra boosts

Pros were spiking these even after Asics went into UK cricket market. Marcus Trescothick being one. They were possibly favoured because they were made of leather.
They are/were a good shoe and were also popular as a straight-up training shoe. I'm not sure you can still get them though.
-
Different brand but he currently has these Adidas in a similar style to those ASICS in a size 9 (https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/7760/CJPeVs.jpg)

Very reminiscent of the adidas spikes Kallis and Sachin used to wear!
-
saw those on his social media feed - also said there were 10s & 11s - absolutely lovely and great for £80!!!!

I would recommend Gary's service and he has done this for a number of pros for a number of years.
He also offers a decent choice with the spiking options

Finally got round to sorting the pics:

Ended up managing to get a pair of Roadhawk FF2 rather than the Gel Quantums I initially posted about - they were a bit too grey so they're now for indoor training.

I know players in the past who have that this done by him but I can't say whether he still does does option.
I would drop him a line. Gary is easy guy to deal with

@Jimbo did you go through with getting some trainers spiked up by Spyder? If so, how did they hold up last season?
Looking at doing the same this year, after last few pairs of cricket boots seeming really hard soled. Discomfort in the arch of my foot, my ankles, shins and knees (basically my whole leg at this point) gets progressively worse throughout the season.
Clearly it isn't just the footwear, it's probably my gait and running technique. So, considering going to a running shop, having some gait analysis and buying something to help. Then getting them spiked up.
Anyone tried something similar? I've seen most people go for tennis shoes, does that type of shoe suit the spiking process more?
-
Nah @Paese just got some cheap ASICS spikes. Couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

Ah, fair enough. Out of interest, where did you find ASICS spikes? They seem to be more and more difficult to get ahold of in the UK. Something about them leaving the UK cricket market?

eBay, just a pair of the real basic ones to tide me over for a season or two. In a normal season I play largely on astroturf so top spikes aren't really a necessity.

I suffer with foot and Achilles issues so had a pair of Adidas Solar Glides spiked up by Spyder at the start of last season. Held up very well. Will be using the same pair this season
-
I’ve just ordered a custom pair from Spyder too. Suffering from sore feet/mild PF current cricket shoes just aren’t cutting it for me.
