Looking for a winter refurb on my favourite bat - the GM L540 I bought from Pete Hosk a couple of years ago.
GM have quoted me £52 (small repairs, sanding, grip, stickers and return postage), any experience of their service? Or should I find someone else to do it?
-
Why not do it yourself? Bit of sandpaper £2. Sand round the stickers 2hrs. Rescuff £3.
-
Never used GM, but you'd expect a decent service and obviously GM stickers. Not the cheapest though at £52, as think you'd find most refurbs or smaller brands offering the same service for around £40 inc return postage, £30 if local and you were able to drop off/pick up.
Where are you based mate?

I'm sure @Kulli has had a refurb done by GM and was pretty impressed besides the work experience kid being let loose on the toe guard application.
If you love the bat and want to keep it on brand then i'd go for the service by GM. Yes the £52 might look like a high initial outlay but compared to others the addition really isn't that bad if you want it to stay GM liveried. I'm sure there are numerous other smaller batmakers who could do just as good a job on a refurb for a lower price also. Plenty on here too :)

GM do a good job, but you do okay a premium for them adding GM stickers to to the bat afterwords, so it really depends how important that is to you.

Pretty much this... I had my bat refurbed by GM as I like the Noir stickers and didn't want to lose them.
But the refurb was excellent and I can't moan about the quality of the work.

I'm not actually that bothered about the stickers (or the grip, which is brand new), but there's a slight crack in the toe and I don't want to take any chances as I adore this bat...
-
In that case you could likely save yourself £20 or so getting it done elsewhere.
-
Depends where you're based then mate really. Loads of good refurb people dotted around. Or you can post it in.

If you don't mind posting your bat, @Red Ink Cricket or @jonny77 will both do a cracking job of it and both have some lovely stickers of their own.

What I have seen of the GM refurbs is they have left in the sticker shadow if the new stickers are different (old model sticker not available for example). That would really annoy me but maybe if you are clear what you want they sand a bit more. Some of the scuff sheet application and toe guard application also seems a bit hit or miss and none of the latest stickers seem to stick down very well so I'm not convinced there is much attention to detail which is a shame.
I could of course be being overly critical and negative but for a toe repair I would be looking at hunting down your local reputable bat maker instead.
If you're paying £52 the least you can expect is the sticker shadow to be removed, and the new toe guard & scuff sheet to be applied with some degree of care!

I sent 3 bats for a clean up, an icon original and a 909 also a mana 808. All sorted with new grips and with the siren stickers added and all I can say is they are superb. Great service and communication from to start to finish from Steve wilkinson. I would highly recommend having it done.

Anyone used Garrard & Flack to repair and refurbish a bat?
Quite reasonably priced I thought - https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0051/6469/5645/files/NON_WARRANTY_CRICKET_BAT_REPAIRS.pdf?v=1579118584 (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0051/6469/5645/files/NON_WARRANTY_CRICKET_BAT_REPAIRS.pdf?v=1579118584)

Ed’s a good bat maker with classy labels, but his pricing in my opinion is pretty steep, £60 for a refurb and rehandle for example.
His entry level services like basic face clean and a basic refurb are more or less in line with other refurbishment services I’ve seen.
The finish and work however will be excellent I’d imagine.

Think most places are around £50 - £60, so isn't too high. I always think you've got to consider if it's worthwhile. If there's plenty of life in the bat, then maybe a rehandle is worth it. If it's on its way out, I'd put that £60 towards a new bat..

Yes please, that'd be great as I have a similar job needing to be done.

If anyone needs a refurb and any repair work my prices start from £20 so drop me a mesage

A quick update on the bat I sent to G&F to be refurbed.
Bad had been used across two seasons but, due to injury and Covid, has had around one seasons' worth of use. General wear and tear but only damage is two cracks to the lower part of the outside edge. The higher one seems larger superficial. The one nearest the toe seems more substantial and there is quite a large compression of the wood in this area.

I dropped the bat off at the Post Office on a Monday and it was back with me the following Friday. Cost £30 plus postage. Fairly impressed with the standard of the work. Cracks look to have been glued, sanded and taped up. The repairs aside, it looks like a new bat. Would certainly recommend the service.
