I love my SS bats And i have had plenty but currently using a Heritage and a White Edition RED (makes no sense)
I’ve no idea if they make differing shapes or whether they are all the same?
My gut says all broadly the same generic shape but can someone wiser than me explain how models differ please?
-
you are right....its the same generic shape
There have been a few models like SS T20 premium, SS Thor with lower middle than the generic shape.
There was one or two models that had spine ending in toe
The problem is they don't sunset the old models and now in their TON/ Single S/ SS/ Retro / Camo/Falcon ranges its tons of models
Not sure how they track all of them
Nightmare for a retailer explaining the differences to customer
-
People buy specific SS bats based on price/budget, not based on shapes within SS. There is a bat at every price point. Unlike a GM say where you decide on a shape first and then on a price point/grade level, SS is all single shape but different price points (there is some variation in shapes due to being hand made but that's about it). Mostly the different ranges are based on different willow grades and quality of making (better) in higher ranges. So retailer don't really need to explain differences between ranges apart from price.
-
Seems to be release lots of different sticker designs and people will buy the ones they like.
-
Wow, would you pay £1500 for this Gunther...

(the grains on my son's bat are better than this!)
-
The world has officially gone mad! 😆
-
Sad thing is that people will actually buy them..
-
For £1500 the bat had better be hitting the 6s for me...
-
The launch was interesting too
-
This is the only Gunther I would pay 1500 for:

Not that it makes it a remotely VFM purchase, but the 2 bats actually come as a pair in a leather case for £1500.
-
They come in pairs you say?
-
Ridiculous bat at that price. I felt even the player bats currently at 650 GBP are crazy price and this is more than double. I have used lots of SS bats around 100 GBP and most have been guns irrespective of grains/look. Unless one wants to buy for look, for performance/scoring runs/hitting sixes, most SS bats under 100 or 200 are just fine.
-

So you a leather case which holds 2 bats, you get a premium one, the one with the rainbow coloured stickering, and another with gunmetal ish stickers, which is a lower grade bat. It's still absolutely bonkers, you could get full kit plus 3 G1 bats (maybe even 4) from some manufacturers.
-
The second bat is supposed to be a replica net bat or backup so you don't always have to use the good one.

Ah that makes it just a P**s take not a totally Royal F*****g p*** take lol

I genuinely don’t see the issue. If somebody wants to pay £1500 for two bats and a smart leather case then let them.
We all know there is far more value for money out there in the market, and the price point is obviously absolutely ludicrous. But the market is obviously there otherwise they wouldn’t have produced it.
If somebody with more money then sense wants to spend there reddies on something like this then more fool them haha

I get where you're coming from mate, but personally think there's a point where it's a tad much. Yes some people are clued up, but not everyone. It also increases the expectation of how much things should cost. If this is the price of a G1+/Pro Grade or whatever, then how much will a G2 cost soon? Would you be happy if every batmaker/brand did this and priced many out of buying a cricket bat full stop? There's nothing special about these bats from what i can tell, apart from them looking nice. So is it ethical to charge 3 times what it costs elsewhere?
At a time when everything is becoming more expensive and the game is struggling to engage with a new audience, I'm not sure ramping up costs to this extent is a good thing. There's enough eliteism in sport as it is imo.
-
The only logic I can see in it is for those who want to buy a status symbol rather than a cricket bat. The point is to have something wildly expensive, not to have something that is value for money or even something that is very high quality. Otherwise, I'm at a loss as to who is buying this.

Also agree with everything you have said there mate.
The big companies are driving up the price of there top end bats which is ludicrous. We had the same discussion when someone mentioned about the £600 keeleys, when GN first released the Legend which was astronomical for the time. But there is always going to be a market for it, as people want to have the best of the best, or what they perceive to be so.
Companies will continue to do so as long as people keep buying them.
I wrote last night when I was a little tired so maybe I was a little rushed in what I said, I feel like SS would have been far better making than an exclusive 10 or 20 bat run limited edition style. But they will sell as many as they can.
Don’t get me wrong £1500 is extremely heavy on price. They wouldn’t be doing it if they didn’t think they could sell them.
-
In what way would they have been better off doing a limited run?
These crazy priced bats will get bought by people with more money than sense, but you can still easily pick up a more than decent bat for 100-150 if that’s what you want or have the budget for.
There aren’t many industries where companies won’t try and charge the max they can.

This. It's like designer clothing, it's ridiculously expensive for absolutely no reason other than being expensive and being a certain brand/design.
