I’m currently very bored.
As I am sure many of us will be in Lockdown II
I find it quite hard to always find topics and threads to pique my interest...
So I was wondering if anyone wanted to post a few of their all time favourite/greatest threads below
Or if there are any questions you have been thinking of asking
I’ll kick off with... are there any female contributors on CBF?
If this is in the wrong place feel free to move it but a trip down memory lane would fill some time without cricket (or the pub)
-
I will confess to enjoying a browse through the old "Your *insert year* Kit" threads. Interesting to see how the various kit fads develop and which brands have come and gone.
In terms of questions, I've found myself buying bats from a string of different makers despite finding several brands who gave excellent customer service and sorted me a brilliant bat.
So, what's everyone's preference: new stick from a new maker to try out as many as possible or find one you really like and stick with one brand?
-
Some of the drama from the old days was highly amusing. I'm naming no names, but there were some scandals!
I also like the old kit threads. Funny how bats like the Kookaburra Kahuna were once so highly regarded, and how that has changed over time, and the same with brands. Especially Puma etc.
-
I'll name names - shaq harris. Quite alot of humorous drama around this character including bats lost in a supposed kitchen fire and then appealing for financial support. Turns out he was just robbing people. Dont think anyone was shocked. Hopefully people got their money back
There was a female international Dutch player (apologies, forgotten the name) who posted for a brief while but there was some very crude/borderline sexist comments around the same time, unrelated to her, and she stopped posting. Shame as she played to a higher equivalent standard than most of us and had some interesting things to say.
I personally used to enjoy the Q&A threads that certain Brands offered from time to time. And anything related to bat industry knowledge
-
I like all the bat maker threads. So jealous of the skills on display.
The very seen Northern Monkey & Edge bats in action first hand and they both performed great.
The eBay thread alone must have cost me £££s
Also the ongoing moaning about Chris Woakes, Jos Buttler & Mo Ali makes me roll my eyes... but it’s all about opinions I guess
-
'Who makes bats for who' speculation/ knowledge sharing threads. (Often scoffed at by posters found (not very) subtly dropping hints about who makes bats for who on other threads.)

ThatSS one of my favouriteSS too

A few years ago was a lot better as there were forum sponsors who contributed and a lot of characters on here as well. Miss my debates with a chap called fast Eddie.
Old seasons kit treads always draw me in.
We used to have meet ups and even matches as a forum side and they were always great even the lead up threads were great
-
The meet ups at Vitas were absolutely brilliant. Made some good mates from going to them.
-
It was better when more attention was given to independent batmakers. The site was set-up with the intention of giving them exposure, was it not?

It’s fairly reliant on them having some input too though. Sponsors on here are, for the most part, inactive.

Possibly because they've witnessed people becoming increasingly interested in Gunn & Moore, Gray Nicolls and the like?
When did H4L stop making good bats, for example?

H4L still make cracking bats but as far as I know they aren't for someone on a budget whereas before Matt built the company up they were significantly cheaper I believe?
I take your point though, there's definitely a lot more discussion of forum brands in older threads.

It works both ways. When H4L and Paul Aldred had a regular presence on the forum their bats were popular. When they stopped, less so. Doesnt mean they dont make good bats, they just sell less to forum members because they dont market themselves here.
A fairly basic sales concept
Some super newish makers on the forum at the moment and I have just purchased from one due to their regular presence and posts. And will use others in future

I remember fast eddie and tales of his son faster eddie who he made sound like Joel Garner downhill with the wind behind him :D Did anyone ever see him bowl?
-
In my years of lurking there has been some belters...
There was the whole instinct cricket starting up which I seem to remember although never had any of their gear. The AK-47 did look nice though.
I can't remember the member but someone went through a period of time comparing a wide grainer to a close grainer to see the difference (absolute peak of what a CBF thread should be about imo)
There has been plenty of debate from @SLA and others which I've always enjoyed reading through.
Dave @procricket used to have some mega sales, I think I benefitted from a grainy SS years and years ago now which was a belter. He also spent some time at B3 and their clearance days were always great.
Who remembers Itias (was it?) used to love their stickers and always seemed popular on here.
Streaky when he was with B3 used to post popular Q&A threads
now we have some cool (is it right to say upcoming?) batmakers who are learning (quickly it seems, which is a good thing) their trades.
Forum has always been a place for me to spend the odd lunchbreak lurking around - looking at all things cricket which is great. Yes trends, members and "buzz" seems to come and go at times but I think the core is always there and that's what makes the place :D
-

Yes he came to one of the forum nets and was clear he knew his father and I didn’t always see eye to eye and he bowled everything half way down at about 60mph. Managed to knock a bat in that day lol.
Think Fast Eddie left after all his pomp for the right way to do things he scammed someone with an Aldred bat

Yep agree. For any of the admins that view this thread I would be happy to find out about being a sponsor as Iv been here long enough so may as well start paying for the privilege 😝

I remember Instinct! Their stickers were great. I used to like Rob Pack's presence here, and his brand too. I got two brilliant bats from him around that time, and a visit to the pack cave was a wonderful thing. Josh Gavan of JP Gavan was also there for a while, and his brand (and skills) seem to be a pretty big success in Australia, which is fantastic.
This thread kinda swings around again to that question of how we 'make the forum great again ', or whether that idea is just nostalgia really.
Lockdown this winter would be a good time to figure out how we can improve it for the new season?
-
I loved the Norbs or Laver ask the bat maker threads.
Shaq blowing up his kitchen was insane.
I still can't believe no one wanted to buy the washing machine I put up for sale.
Actually the net/matches write ups are my favourite.
-
Most I enjoyed, were always Chads,Simon Mays,The hosks etc bat posts,,,I’d no idea bats were out there that looked so good
Used to enjoy Ryan’s posts, especially the laminate project, and Paul Aldred used to tease with some real stunners.
ST bats was another favourite
Buzz,s batting book,,(that made me realise how stupid I’d batted over the years)
There’s always something on here to pique the bat lovers interest.
Plus I’ve made some good mates from here

I think he played for Stone in one of the forum games. He was NOT quick.

He was NOT quick.
Must admit Im not shocked!

Was that the day with 3 teams?
I recall a match report saying he got carted in the first game, then decided to keep wicket in the second one!
-
Jon Pinson was good value in many ways.
-
Any chance someone could post the links to some of the old gold threads for evening reading please?

I remember threads where freedom of expression was not suppressed by ruthless despots!

I am currently enjoying @fasteddie greatest hits

Personally I blame the lame-stream, fake news media and the radical leftist agenda.
-
The “guilty pleasures” thread might go some way to explain the lack of female contributors 😉
-
Enjoyed reading this one, when I was looking to scratch the Laminate itch.

Overs the years I think it has actually been the general annual threads that I have enjoyed - "Your **** kit" or "Your **** Season". Seeing everyone's kit or reading how everyone's got on at the weekend.
The forum trend of turning every thread into an England selection debate always tickles me.
I joined the forum after years out of cricket working abroad, so it really opened my eyes as to what was out there in terms of kit.
The forum even helped me find my current club. Thanks @Canners for that!
-
The grain thread... some of the bats on there were bellissimo!
-
For me it's been looking through the earlier threads from batmakers to pick up advice and tips. There doesn't seem to be hardly any now, which is a shame as they were really educational.
I also like seeing people's efforts on the batmaking and refurbing side, these are great to see.
Having only been on the forum for a couple of years I missed a lot of what has been mentioned in the previous posts, but all sounds very entertaining! 😆
-
Oooh what about Pete Hosk's guide to his massive bat collection? That was an awesome thread.

"The Stig" he was and is still my forum Hero

The forum needs a new stig. The original must be too old for this, plus no way could he play the funky shots modern players play. 😂

^ Are there any CBF members who are pro/international players? They all claim to be big bat collectors but they don't want to "talk about bats"? Brats! :D

Very tenuous connection but a friend of an old friend grew up near Gary Ballance's family and apparently he's an absolute kit badger. Mountains of stuff stashed away at his family's home.

Really?
I'd be happy to help Ballance's family with that stash. I will pay for the shipping. Hook me up, bruh. :D

Wasn't Carlos Brathwaite on here? Trident sports or am I making that up?
