Title: Wood lathe back from the dead
Post by: Guyfawkes on November 14, 2020, 02:58:01 PM
So I have been looking round for a second hand lathe for binding and a mate of mine said he had an old one but it was rusted and all the bearings had seized but I was welcome to it for any parts I could salvage. Picked it up today. A Nu-tools 5 speed lathe. Very rusted and with what looked like little chance. Put a new plug on it not expecting anything but it made a sound......then blew my electrics! Tried again turning everything else off in the workshop but this time we had plumes of smoke instead! Thinking all hope was now gone I reverted to trying to take it apart instead and with some brute force freed a bearing. One last go with power and we have success!! What a touch. Now to give her a proper clean up, get a belt and some other little parts she needs and we have a working wood lathe! One very happy member!

Good work mate. I was looking at one of these on Ebay recently, so let me know what it's like.

Thanks mate. I have emailed a firm who maybe able to find me a new drive belt for it. Also the tailstock is seized onto the bed but I'm hoping that a club hammer might free it up! My mate can't believe it is working. Says it has been sat outside, uncovered in his yard for 5 years!
