Just saw this on Twitter. Heal well, John! Glad you're not too badly hurt.

Does the old forum rule count here? Didn’t happen without photos?

Does the forum have a sensory age guidance system in place? I have pics if people really want to see but they aren’t the prettiest.

Thanks for the well wishes. Extremely sore but could have been much much worse. Hoping a specialist on Wednesday will give me the all clear and confirm no major and long lasting issues. Either way, I still have my thumb, just!

There’s never a good time for this to happen but the lead up to Christmas has placed a lot of pressure on quite a few customers to source other presents.

I’ve had similar injuries in past, smashed thumb from a Chuck rotating at 2000rpm and nearly losing my thumb when it got caught between Emery tape and workpiece spinning at same speed.

Hopefully a quick recovery!

Honest story, I was sitting in the waiting area of A&E last year when a chap walked in covered in blood and calmly walked up to the desk and said “sorry to bother you but lost my thumb on a circular saw, Iv got it in this bag shall I take a seat.

Needless to say he was rushed through, couldn’t believe the amount of blood you could lose.

As stated hope there is no lasting damage mate.

Ouch!  Sorry to hear that but hope you can make a full recovery as soon as possible.

Maybe you could take on a budding apprentice for the Xmas bats?  I bet there would be lots of volunteers from this forum :)

Goodness me John, when the customer asked you to take some weight off, he meant the bat and not your thumb!

I hope you heal quickly and have a painless journey to recovery. At least you can watch some cricket on the TV.  :)

Get well soon John and hopefully no long term damage.

Making me rethink my idea of buying a table saw for DIY in the new year  :(

Thanks guys

It’s a cut I’ve done 1000s of times before, just a freak accident that this one slipped and my thumb got in the way. I’d machined another 10-15 clefts before this one without issue. Just one of those things I guess

I’ll be making a jig for this one once I’m back up and running so there’s no chance of it happening again.

I can only imagine the outpourings of love we'd see should one of the batmakers at Gunn & Moore have a similar accident.   ;)

Hope the recover goes smoothly.

Same advice stands as always. If a bit breaks off a repair’s much easier if you keep the missing piece 😁

Thanks everyone.

Fortunately the bit didn’t come off fully. It’s Not something I can glue, clamp and sand though.

Just don’t dowel it, you know how the forum hates dowels 😁

Well I was pretty close to needing a dowel to hold my thumb together but just enough holding together. Hopefully good news with the specialist tomorrow and I’ll be back to bat making in no time. Hoping early new year the hand will be strong enough for some shaping

A Lami-thumb might do the trick and keep it going for a few more years!

Well the specialist couldn’t make an assessment as it’s still too much of a mess atm. Probably another couple of weeks before the swelling has gone down enough to make a full assessment.

Having regular clean and dressing changes every 2 days so hopefully should see a little progress every few days

How is your thumb, John? Hope you’re on the mend.

Healing nicely although likely to have some perm or long standing issues with feeling going forward.

I’m back to bat making. It’s a touch slower than normal but trying to work around it. Don’t think the freezing workshop helps much so as the weather improves it should become easier.

I’ve started machining up the batch of clefts that I started before I did it, along with a new delivery and I’ve got a lot of very nice willow to choose from. Plenty in all grades to work with which is great. My new bandsaw jig is up and running and making life much easier and safer when machining up.

Glad to hear you are back in the workshop John

I messaged you regarding a custom bat a while back, not sure if you received it? Or if you did and just have a backlog of work, dont worry no rush. Mend up first and foremost

Hi mate. Yeah received and responded to the last message on the 13th. Haven’t had anything since.

If you have my number, it’s easier to drop me a WhatsApp if that works for you. If you don’t, I’ll drop you a message with it

Thanks mate. It’s been nice to get back into it. Having to take it slow due to lack of feeling in half my thumb and soreness in the rest but it’s progressing so that’s the main thing

Happy to hear you’re able to work again, easing yourself in.
Any new shapes on the horizon? You have a nice range as it is and you made a lovely x3 for me and you were great to deal with.

Due to last year I’ve delayed any new bats until next year. Always tinkering with shapes in the workshop and custom make a lot both on and off the forum. As soon as I’ve caught up on orders I’m going to look at doing some specials. Got a few nice shapes I’ve been working on but put on hold whilst I get through some orders

New pads and gloves will be on the website as soon as I can chance to get some new pics done.

Nope different this time and even better in my opinion. Quality is spot on
